During a traffic stop last night, Jason Noroian, 32, allegedly tried to grab a police officer's gun.

And officials say the confrontation quickly escalated prompting the unnamed officer, age 28, to fire a single shot into Noroian's torso. He did not survive and the officer is now on paid administrative leave.

Why did the police officer stop Noroian in the first place?

St. Louis Metro Police, full report of the incident on view below, say that officers were responding to a call for "suspicious vehicles" at the intersection of Leonor K. Sullivan Boulevard and Biddle Street around 6:00 p.m. last night. The occupants of the car were possibly involved in a narcotics transaction.

After they confirmed that the cars matched the description provided, they made a traffic stop -- during which time they determined that Noroian, a white male from Des Peres, had an active warrant.

The police report says:

As the officer attempted to arrest the suspect, he resisted and struggled to grab the officer's firearm. As the struggle over the weapon continued the officer, in fear for his safety, discharged one round striking the suspect in the torso. The suspect was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

Subsequently, officers found a loaded .40 caliber handgun on the suspect. In the second vehicle was a 32-year-old white female, who was arrested -- without incident -- for narcotics possession.

The officer in this case has two years of service with the department and is now on paid leave so the department can do its standard internal investigation that is protocol with officer-involved shootings.
