On April 5, 2011, Michael Burgund walked into the Alton Police Department and told officials that he had sexually assaulted toddlers in his family -- two girls, ages two and three.

Now, the 30-year-old Alton man will spend the rest of his life in prison, says Madison County State's Attorney Tom Gibbons, who announced that Burgund, found guilty in December, has officially been sentenced.

"Michael Burgund is a predator, and he deserves to spend the rest of his life in prison for the heinous acts that he committed," Gibbons says in a statement. "Our victims were brave, little girls who did not deserve this abuse. I'm glad that the defendant is being removed from society and will never again be able to prey on children."

What charges did he ultimately face?

Officials say that jurors deliberated for a total of six hours before finding Burgund guilty of sexually assaulting the two young girls, starting in June 2008. In July 2011, prosecutors filed to seek natural life in prison, based on the number of predatory criminal sexual assault counts filed -- as well as the fact that he had committed the crime against two victims.

Typically, the maximum penalty for a Class X felony of this sort is 30 years, but after prosecutors pushed for a tougher sentence given these especially horrific circumstances, Chief Judge Ann Callis sentenced him to life.

When Burgund appeared in court in December of last year, he broke down crying -- and argued at times that he didn't remember committing any of these crimes and couldn't believe any of this had happened.

The sentencing was announced late Friday afternoon.

Here's the full announcement from the Office of the State's Attorney:

Edwardsville-- Madison County State's Attorney Tom Gibbons announced this afternoon that an Alton man will spend the rest of his life in prison for sexually assaulting two family members.

Michael S. Burgund was convicted on December 10, 2012, o f five counts of Predatory Criminal Sexual Assault. Jury selection began on Tuesday, December 4, 2012, in the case against Burgund (d.o.b. 12/11/82) who was charged on April 5, 2011 after he walked into the Alton Police Department and admitted that he committed the crimes for which he was later charged.

Jurors deliberated about six hours before finding Burgund guilty of sexually assaulting two female family members, ages 2 and 3, beginning in June 2008.

On July 13, 2011, prosecutors filed a Notice of Intention to Seek Natural Life in Prison based on the number of Predatory Criminal Sexual Assault counts filed as well as the fact that he committed the crime against two victims. Normally, the maximum penalty for a Class X felony is 6-30 years. As a result, Chief Judge Ann Callis sentenced Burgund to the mandatory natural life in prison.

State's Attorney Gibbons commended the work of Assistant State's Attorneys Amy Gabriel and Crystal Uhe who prosecuted the case. "This was a very difficult case for everyone involved. My staff, along with the Child Advocacy Center, the Alton Police Department and the physicians, worked very hard to ensure that justice was done for these little girls," said Gibbons. "Michael Burgund is a predator and he deserves to spend the rest of his life in prison for the heinous acts that he committed. Our victims were brave, little girls who did not deserve this abuse. I'm glad that the defendant is being removed from society and will never again be able to prey on children."

Gibbons also thanked the jurors for their service.

Awful story, I pray for the girls and Michael. I went to school with Mike and played soccer with him...he was the last person on Earth you would think would do something like this...the nicest guy and all-american collegiate soccer player....every guy wanted to be this guy...just mind-boggling...

Kill the sob- you can't fix guys like that. If that's what they're into then that's what they'll be attracted to regardless of any "fixing".

Nope but Illinois did away with the correct penalty.

He gave those little girls a life sentence when he committed those acts against them. Hard to feel sorry for him.

The fact that he confessed and then claimed to have forgotten the assaults ever happened is an interesting part of the story that's being ignored. If he is mentally ill, there's a larger problem that should be handled in a more appropriate way. Hopefully they haven't sentenced a mentally ill person to a life of prison sex. Either way, I just appreciate that one more asshole is off the street and two little girls are better off.

Life in prison is cheaper. Life in prison allows guilty people to be released if their innocence is later proven. Life in prison denies the state the power to execute (or murder, if it's an innocent person) their own citizens. Life in prison isn't based on a bunch of bullshit Bronze Age eye-for-an-eye fairy tales.

The only people who support the death penalty are barbaric simpletons with double digit IQ's.

Cases like this afford people an opportunity to fantasize about the most hideous ways to kill or mutilate or torture the offending party while maintaining the moral high ground. Yeah, he should never reenter society. And yeah, the prison population will probably make quick work of him. But asking if it's a fair sentence just opens the door for people to expose their inner aggression in a safe environment. Don't throw fuel on the fire.

So he walks into the police and confessed even though he wasn't charged with anything. Doesn't say if he was suspected of anything before that. He claims to not remember committing the crimes. This doesn't seem right, there is more to this story. Child molesters usually try to avoid getting caught, not turn themselves in, they have a compulsion to molest. I'm guessing this guy is mentally ill, they are more likely to confess to crimes whether they did anything or not. If guilty then that's a fair sentence.

dumb responses there is nothing worse than life in prison for a child molester. first he will be passed around to the sodomizers, then he will be torchered by every inmate with a young child, then someone will shank him, and the funny thing is that the guards will not see a thing

Life in prison....plus getting raped daily by "ZED", would be fair!!! But if it was my child, he wouldn't even make it to prison.

No, don't kill him, let him suffer for the rest of his life. Those girls have to live with it, he should to. Dan Foshage is right, he is going to have a very hard time in prison.

Wish there was a better way than providing a life of free room and board and health care. But these guys never change. Hopefully the other inmates will take care of him appropriately.

Should be much worse than life in prison.. should be much more painful and slow than the death sentence.

Anyone who lays their hands on a child in an abusive manner deserves something much worse than life in prison! Hang him!

I don't think you can change someone like that; best to keep him far away where he can't do harm.

Once all the ppl in prison realize what he did, they will take care of him

he'll get killed pretty quick by the other inmates for being a child molester or he'll spend the rest of his life in solitarty confinement.

mentally ill or not he belongs in prison away from little girls that he could do this to in the future...in my opinion i don't give a rats ass if he ever gets the "help" he needs, i would rather the funds go into giving the VICTIMS help

kimbev69
kimbev69

are you serious? cause he now is regretting confessing you think they got someone that could possibly be innocent..i'm sure there was evidence regarding what were most likely his own two babies....

and those of us that don't want to see the recidivism rate go up and up and up again..he will be released and he will hook up with some single mom and more than likely kill the next kid instead

@Kenzington I say fuel the fire... If someone is sick enough to molest and sodomize their own children.. Especially infants and toddlers that cannot speak up for themselves, I say put them in public and let everyone talk shit. They deserve everything that happens to them.
