An abuse of power?

State Senator John Lamping was caught parking his car -- with official Senate license plates -- in a handicapped spot in Jefferson City last week. A tipster who snapped the photo sent it to Fired Up! Missouri, which tweeted it out, saying, "Do @JohnLamping's official tags give him special handicap parking spot privileges?"

"It looked like to me the state senator felt that he was above the law," the photographer, a Jefferson City source who wished to remain anonymous, tells Daily RFT.

Asked for comment, Lamping said he didn't initially realize he had used a handicapped space when he parked there after a late night at the Missouri State Capitol, and he is sorry for his mistake.

Here's the full photo and tweet via Fired Up! (which was also sent to Daily RFT by a concerned reader).

The individual snapped the photo outside of a hotel and says he knew right away the vehicle belonged to Lamping, a Republican lawmaker who represents parts of St. Louis County.

His plates have "S-24" printed on them, referring to Lamping's district.

Asked about the photo yesterday, Lamping's office sends us this statement, directly from the state senator:

I sincerely apologize. The Senate worked late into the night last Wednesday. I did not arrive to my hotel until after midnight and unfortunately did not realize the spot was reserved for handicapped parking. I recognized the mistake when I left early Thursday morning. I never would have intentionally parked in a space designated for the same. I apologize to anyone I inconvenienced.

Isn't Lamping the same clown who had the robo-calls accusing Barbara Fraser of being in favor of sexual predators?

All the stories about violence posted on RFTs page this week, and weekly for that matter, and this is what people get fired up over.

I was sure what party he belonged to because the media reported it. If this was a Democrat, the photo would not have been taken.

Love this story. I was pretty sure what party he belonged to. And they say we love "entitlements".

He's a republican, of course he did it on purpose and its a massive abuse of power!  Have him impeached immediately!  Not only that, but he should be thrown in jail for life!  That's not even good enough actually.  He should be sued for every penny he has and have his house burned to the ground.  Oh those republicans!

Why special plates? Just another hypocrite law maker.

I need to know why he has a special plate? So cops know they shouldn't pull him over? By the way, cops put their badge number on vanity plates for the same reason.

Not an abuse of power. Parking in a fire lane would be. He's just another idiot driver and should be fined twice as much because he's a politician. In my opinion. Yea Bob Ell I wouldn't be the least bit shocked to see that come up at some point.

Next item on the legislative agenda: reformatting elected officials' license plates so it's not possible to determine who is driving them.

I've often imagined that the Dodge Charger (albeit an orange one with Dixie painted on the roof) is the preferred vehicle of the Missouri legislature. This image partially proves that hypothesis.

How can you not know? There's a gigantic fucking blue handicap symbol right in the middle of the parking spot. If he "wasn't aware" than he wasn't mentally capable of driving a motor vehicle that night.

Just hope he got the ticket he deserved, even if it was accidental.

He said he got there late at night - these handicap lines are dark blue, perhaps he truly didn't see it. We don't know the whole story, unless he does it again it isn't worth our time.

No abuse of power unless he got a ticket and used his connections to not pay it. Just an asshole move.

dbag for sure. Isn't there a $500 parking fine?

Bad move? Yes. Illegal? Yes. Abuse of power? Hardly.
