Roy Blunt, No on Background Checks: "We Must Do Everything We Can to Prevent Tragedies"

Roy Blunt talks gun control in February.
U.S. Senator Roy Blunt, a Missouri Republican, yesterday voted against a proposal to expand gun background checks in the country.

Then he fired off this statement, that said, in part: "We must do everything we can to prevent tragedies like those that took place in Newtown Aurora, or Tucson..."

Blunt was one of 46 senators who voted no, helping to defeat the bipartisan proposal and dealing a significant blow to those who have been pushing for tougher gun restrictions since last year's elementary-school shooting.

Why? His press-release header: "Senator Blunt Stands Up For Americans' Second Amendment Rights."

Here's footage of a recent interview of Blunt this week, in which he explained his opposition to the background check proposal under consideration.

Blunt has focused on mental health efforts and has said that while he is not entirely opposed to stricter background checks, he wouldn't support measures that stop neighbors and family members from being able to trade guns.

The high-stakes showdown yesterday centered on a bipartisan proposal to expand federal background checks to more gun buyers by requiring them for all transactions at gun shows and online.

Critics say they are concerned with government officials establishing some sort of "gun registry" -- a debate which has intensified in Missouri.

Blunt, along with other Senate Republicans, had sponsored a watered-down alternative proposal that "would have reauthorized and improved the National Instant Criminal Background Check System."

Here is Blunt's press release in full:

Senator Blunt Stands Up For Americans' Second Amendment Rights

Blunt Co-Sponsors Republican Alternative To Prevent Tragedies Like Newtown

WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Senator Roy Blunt (Mo.) today co-sponsored the Republican alternative to the gun bill that was introduced by U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley (Iowa). The provision would have reauthorized and improved the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS), increased resources for prosecutions of gun crime, addressed mental illness in the criminal justice system, and strengthened criminal law by including straw purchasing and illegal firearm trafficking statutes.

"We must do everything we can to prevent tragedies like those that took place in Newtown, Aurora, or Tucson, without restricting the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding citizens," said Blunt. "I'm disappointed this provision, which offered real solutions to keep Americans safe from senseless acts of violence, was ultimately blocked."

Blunt voted against an amendment introduced by U.S. Senators Pat Toomey (Pa.) and Joe Manchin (WV).

She lucked her way back in due to stupid comments by Akin. She is such a phony that she could not resist commenting publicly, saying Akin should stay in the race.

Not you right now, because I was dead serious. I know about the background checks. The thing about the lack of a 24 hour loss of a weapon to report, way to vague, and makes every look guilty.

My Dad had a fire in his home earlier this year, I now have his guns, no background check, no bill of sale, nothing. Totally legal.

Are you trying to argue that McCaskill didn't have actual people vote for her? I'm confused.

Wow Duane, so bigotry and lack of compassion for other human beings are not only logical but funny? You are a miserable excuse for a sentient being. Pray I never run across you undulating across a freeway, or I'll back up and run over you again.

I love the argument that criminals don't obey gun laws... Well, criminals don't obey laws against stealing, assault, and many other crimes but we still have legislation against it. Background checks establishes "personal responsibility" for those selling/purchasing weapons to/for criminals, and responsibility is part of the GOP platform. This antiquated party is for legislating I.D.'s for voting, but not even simple confirmation on firearms. With your priorities askew how do you hope to be a majority party again?

By them I mean the Republicans that are bragging about a victory now.

The main point is this was a watered down bill that was supposed to make everyone feel somewhat safer and that we accomplished something in the wake of a tragedy. This was Obama and the Dems way of putting a bill out there to let the American people know that something was done...lets move on. Instead all the Reps did was piss people off and embarrassed and angered the president. So instead of this watered down bill we are going to get something a lot worse in 2014 when Dems get the majority in the house. This will come back to bite them in the long run.

Curent laws are fine...but its like having a bank and guarding the front door and leaving the back door wide open with a sign that says "enter here" ...criminals will just use the back door. As far as the second ammendment goes it does not say that you have the right to buy a gun at a gunshow without a background check. Thats what I mean by taking it out of context.

I am not scared of back round checks , why should anyone be scared of them. And by the way during the Vietnam war the NG was known back then as No Go, that's how you kept from going to Nam. He was asked in the card if he would like to serve time in Nam and checked the box no. This isn't something made up by the liberal left, I have no problems with back groiund checks but I do have problems with people like Dick Cheney, GW Bush, Ted Nugent, LaPierre, Limbaugh running around like Capt American and like I said crapped in their pants when it came time for them to serve their country. Kinda hard to take to kinow that your heroes are chicken hawks, flag waving chicken hawks the worst kind of draft dodgers.

@jason coleman, what do you not get about the current background checks we already have in place , what about our constitution is taken out of context? The liberals have proven how ignorant of existing laws and the guns themselves, they are. Crime rates are on the way down not on the way up. Look closely at Australia and England and see that this is the way their gun laws eventually were made outlawed also. No thanks. It's the price you pay for your freedoms is putting up with the danger. You cannot legislate bad people from doing bad things and YOU have to take responsibility for you and your families safety. The gov't cannot be there for every second of every day and another law will not change it. The break you got is when they put NCIS background checks in place and thats as good as it gets.

Jason Coleman
Jason Coleman

Background checks does not violate your rights to own a gun unless yourself are a criminal or a terrorist. As a law abiding citizen who owns many guns I welcome background checks...because I have nothing to hide. The second amendment only guarantees my right to bear a firearm..it does not exclude guns from ever being regulated. Give me a break.

What is your definition of "crazy people?" Only a person who has been judged in the courts may be "locked up."

That stupid poll had less then 1,800 people asked for their basis of analysis. You can NOT apply that to 90% of Americans.

I had one Christina. So why do I need more of them every time I want to purchase another firearm? Does that really make sense? I don't have to get a new driver's license each time I take a trip.

Thank you Carl. He's a better Senator than McCaskill any day of the week. Those background checks proposed were bogus, stupid, and frivolent. Background checks are already in place, and administered by the county sheriff.

Jerry Foster

Norm, you didn't buy from the holder of an FFL. But I'm curious. If you love background checks so much why didn't you volunteer for one and ask the seller to have the transaction processed through an FFL? Are you a hypcrit?

Jerry Foster
Jerry Foster

Lovingcup, what you are talking about is a "strawman purchase" and that is expressly prohibited by laws that are already on the books.

Jerry Foster
Jerry Foster

Lovingcup, either you are being purposefully obtuse, or you don't know the full extent of the failled proposal to broaden background checks.

We won't vote him out. So take off your panties before you get them all bunched up and they cause your discomfort.

Jerry Foster

I already had his website Lauren. And when I right it will be to thank him, which is entirely the opposite of what I wrote to President Obama's Senator from Missouri. The only thing you said that made any sense was the part about the people needing to make our voices heard. We did and your biggotted desire to take away my rights failed.

Jerry Foster
Jerry Foster

Duane, the background check extension proposal has a lot to do with the paranoia of government official who fear the citizens they seek to control.

Jerry Foster
Jerry Foster

Background checks delay law abiding citizens from purchasing a firearm. A right delayed is a right denied. Deny me the exercise of my rights does nothing good for anyone who is the victim of a tragedy. Jason Coleman, your logic is flawed.

Roy Blunt is Missouri's only real senator. The other one is a faux senator that represents a former Chicago community organizer.

The background checks are not the problem in themselves, it is the extensive cost of the checks, the arbitrary nature of the checks, and the registry that is getting created from the records of the checks.

and a background check to own a backpack.

David Rovka

same thing at McDonalds, and at a government run shooting range. gun shows have nothing to do with it. private sales are exempt from checks because the government makes it so hard to run a background check. They need to fix the system before expanding it.

David Rovka
David Rovka

The gun manufacturers want expanded background checks because it gives them and license dealers an advantage over private sellers. expanding background checks like they are proposing would be harmful to lower income people and after market sellers who would have to incur the additional expense. They need to fix the background check system before they try to expand it.

David Rovka
David Rovka

Most of these recent killings have been perpetrated by Democrats. So should those background checks be used to keep democrats from buying guns? these background checks are just another way to discriminate with out due process. hey lefty's, be careful what you wish for.
