Student Arrested for Changing Classmate's Name to "Masturbate" in School Yearbook

Ragain Mastain didn't even notice the "edit" to a photo caption of herself in the Hickman High School yearbook until her boyfriend called the night after the books were distributed.

When the eighteen-year-old graduating senior flipped to page 270, Mastain saw her last name had been changed to "Masturbate." While surprised, she says her reaction was measured.

"It's not an ideal situation," she tells Daily RFT. "But it's also something I have no control over."

Within roughly 24 hours, a classmate, seventeen-year-old Kaitlyn Booth, found herself in another less-than-ideal situation: locked up for her alleged hand in this little game of X-rated Mad Libs.

After the discovery was made (and splashed all over social media), it was soon clear that this was not some epic damn-you-autocorrect moment. Just before the final pages were sent to the printer, one of the yearbook staff members at the Columbia school must have entered the system and changed Mastain's name. According to Mastain, teachers interviewed all the students with access to the editing software, and by the end of the day, Booth was led away in cuffs.

Mastain says she really didn't know or work much with Booth, nor does she believe that she did anything to deserve the prank.

"I don't have that many positive things to say to her at this point. If she wanted to reach out to me and apologize or show some sort of remorse, I'd have been more than willing to speak to her," says Mastain. "I really hope whatever the lesson that's intended for her to learn from this she learned. I agree with the charges that were brought against her."

As of now, Booth has not been formally charged, but she was arrested for felony property damage and harassment. According to the Columbia Daily Tribune, which broke the story, Booth was also given some sort of discipline at school, though that is not public.

Mastain and her staff spent an entire school day taking back the yearbooks and covering the offending word with a sticker. Mastain says Hickman is such a large high school that many people don't know who she is and came in talking loudly about how bad they felt for whomever had been the butt of the joke.

"I'd be like, 'Yeah, I'm fine, I'm right here,'" she says.

All things considered, Mastain -- who's heading for the University of Central Missouri-Warrensburg to study graphic design -- is handling the whole debacle extremely well, even as the tale is going viral. She says she does consider the incident bullying and is even glad that it didn't happen to someone else.

"I know how to handle myself," she says. "But I do know people that this would have completely devastated them and completely ruined their senior year...the message that needs to be taken away from this situation is this is not OK."

Daily RFT left messages with police and the school and will update if we hear back.

WOW .... A Felony. So just this one mess up is going to cost you a couple of your constitutional rights for the rest of your life.  All though If she was a editor then she had every write to make changes to the book and use the software( it was her job) now I'm not saying it was right but it damn sure shouldn't be a felony I'll tell you that. Harrasment yes, absolutely. Getting fired, without a doubt,   but facing prision time and the loss of her constitution, give me a break people.

Yes because being a "spoiled anorexic twat" when your in high school is now a felony? Wonderful precedence for public policy Johnathan. I mock this because she did something stupid and immature in high school and then the adult world turned around and had an even more immature response. "Hehehe she wrote 'masturbate' thats a dirty word. Someone tell on her so she can be punished." Lol grow the fuck up. And what I want to know is what incompetent adult at this school gave them the ok to print these things without giving it a thorough look over but I suppose that's another grievance.

A felony? Makes no sense. Schools too often dismiss real felonies, like drugs or assault and batteries, as something to handle internal and not involve the police or justice system. This is not a felony.

Yes, because she isn't a spoiled anorexic twat. Bravo, Nathan.

Speaking of, somebody in particular would make a FANTASTIC candidate...

Well, Adam, Kaitlyn Booth apparently thought SHE was special. Nobody other than HER PARENTS need to 'grow a thicker fucking skin.' PS...Ragain Mastain is much, much hotter anyway :)

How is what she did felony property damage?  How is a school prank, however misguided, a felony?  Anyone?

Adam White

Precisely. Is she gonna blubber and piss and moan when she gets a boss that's a real asshole?

Criminal charges? The world sucks and you aren't that special. Grow a thicker fucking skin.

I'm not jumping to any conclusions. This girl has no respect for others much less herself so it says a lot for what will become of her and her lack of judgement and character. Your suggestion for punishment is really lacking some immaturity as well. There I go jumping to conclusions again......sorry!

Ronda Evansco-Brooks
Ronda Evansco-Brooks

Yeah, she handled this situation pretty well. This is another act of school bullying. The other girl needs to grow up for the real world. This isn't kindergarten going into college.

Stephanie Richardson

You're jumping to a lot of conclusions. The nature of what was said is really immature, that's true, but that doesn't make the "prankster" someone destined for a collision course of failure & drug abuse. Kids are stupid and mean to each other. It's been that way since high schools were invented.

Make the parents pay for the damages. Let her do community service doing the dirtiest, nastiest, stinking form of community service available. Hell make her clean toilets at school for an entire year.

Nathan Nico Vize

How can anyone be mad at her? Personally I'm mad at all the delinquents that didn't slip the word "Masturbation" into my yearbook.

Too extreme we are way too sensitive to this. There are plenty of bullies in post 18 adult life that don't give 2 shits how your precious children feel. Get them ready for the real world, not make believe land.

Christy Bussen Busse

Send her to jail - Make he parents pay for all new books. Her parents must be to lazy to teach their child right from wrong. Booth should also be made to pick up trash around the school for 2 years wearing a Orange jumper that says bullying is wrong.

well, given that i'm responding to the question in the post..... :)

Absolutely not "Masturbate" is a more appropriate name for that brawd anyway

One look at Kaitlyn Booth and two words spring to mind: Silver spoon. She's been given everything in her life on a golden Luxe tray.

What she did was wrong...but punishing our students with jail time...that is too extreme. She needs community service and to publicly apologize to that girl.

Anthony Gutierrez

You live with the consequences of poor decisions, even at 17 years old.

Natheline Morris-Taylor

Sorry, but bullying should be dealt with accordingly! make an example out of her! So others can think twice!

Joe Havermann
Joe Havermann

I don't think this girl should have a felony on her record for the rest of her life because of a really poor decision she made as an immature 17-year-old. There should be repercussions, but to suggest that her actions in this case should affect her employment prospects thirty years from now... is pretty extreme.

Ryan Stufft

Have her pay for the books qnd do community service. The rest feels like overkill.

meant to say .... did this to the year book and you, (forgot the comma) learns a lesson.

You seem like a very smart young lady and have taught us all a lesson on how to be graceful during a bad situation

@Marshall Patrick why don't we change your name to Cocksucker?

@MrLevit8: The reason why is because most people are too stupid to figure out that it could be untrue and will make judgements about her with no more thought than scratching their asses.

@MrLevit8
High school yearbooks are expensive, at least $40, average is more like $75.
I don't know the student body count for this year, but in 2009 it was 2109.
If they kept the cost down to $50 times 2000 students... that's $100,000 of damage.

That's why it's a felony.

The school can't afford to reprint, so they are using stickers to correct it. Even then it still costs for the stickers, and even more costly, the manpower to gather back the books, fix them, and get them back to the owners.

Her little change was probably a prank of the moment, not so much bullying, but it had a high cost that she (and her parents) are going to have to pay for.

@Stephanie Richardson prankster come on, really. It was mean and I am sure meant to hurt some one.

molady123

@LordSega @MrLevit8 and it was mean, I do believe what ever adult or adults were in charge of overseeing the year book should also be in trouble.
