If Hillary Clinton runs for president in 2016, she'll have at least one high-profile supporter from Missouri.

U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill, the Democrat who got national attention for her race against Todd Akin of "legitimate rape" fame, this morning formally endorsed a 2016 Clinton bid through Ready for Hillary, an independent group that is, well, ready for Hillary to run.

"Hillary Clinton had to give up her political operation while she was making us proud, representing us around the world as an incredible Secretary of State, and that's why Ready for Hillary is so critical," McCaskill says in the statement. "It's important that we start early, building a grassroots army from the ground up, and effectively using the tools of the Internet -- all things that President Obama did so successfully -- so that if Hillary does decide to run, we'll be ready to help her win."

The group says that McCaskill is the first sitting member of Congress to endorse the effort.

Ready for Hillary, the super-PAC that supports Clinton but is technically not affiliated with any potential campaign, emphasizes that McCaskill was "an early Obama '08 supporter."

"We are incredibly grateful to have Senator McCaskill's support in this effort," Craig Smith, a Ready for Hillary senior advisor, says in a statement. "Like Hillary, Senator McCaskill is a fighter -- dedicated in her efforts to strengthen accountability in government -- and a champion for women, children, and families. Ready for Hillary is fortunate to have such a powerful and respected leader like Claire joining our grassroots team."

The announcement from McCaskill does not come as a surprise. The senator earlier this year said that she hopes the former secretary of state runs.

Here's the full press release announcing her endorsement:

U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill (D-MO), an Early Obama '08 Supporter, Announces Support of Ready for Hillary

MCLEAN, VA - Today, U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill of Missouri, an early backer of then-Sen. Obama's 2008 primary campaign, announced her support of Ready for Hillary. Sen. McCaskill is the first sitting member of Congress to endorse the effort.

McCaskill, who said in February that she hopes Hillary Clinton will run for president, described the Ready for Hillary effort as "critical" to electing the former Secretary of State, should she decide to run in 2016.

"Hillary Clinton had to give up her political operation while she was making us proud, representing us around the world as an incredible Secretary of State, and that's why Ready for Hillary is so critical," McCaskill said. "It's important that we start early, building a grassroots army from the ground up, and effectively using the tools of the Internet - all things that President Obama did so successfully - so that if Hillary does decide to run, we'll be ready to help her win."

Sen. McCaskill commended Ready for Hillary for embracing the early supporters of then-Sen. Obama, saying, "They aren't only reaching out to folks who supported Hillary in 2008. They're helping to show that regardless of who you supported for President back then, we can all agree today that there is nobody better equipped to be our next President than Hillary Clinton."

"We are incredibly grateful to have Senator McCaskill's support in this effort," said Ready for Hillary Senior Advisor Craig T. Smith. "Like Hillary, Senator McCaskill is a fighter - dedicated in her efforts to strengthen accountability in government - and a champion for women, children, and families. Ready for Hillary is fortunate to have such a powerful and respected leader like Claire joining our grassroots team."

Ready for Hillary is the nation's premier independent group urging former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to run for president in 2016. RFH is working to lay the groundwork by assembling an army of grassroots Hillary supporters and building an organization to support her potential candidacy. We believe that Hillary Clinton is the best qualified person to be President in 2016 and her historic election would build upon the progress of President Obama and continue to lead this country into the future.

To endorse someone years before the nomination process? Makes no sense other than to pander looking for special favors. Any thinking individual will wait until all candidates are known, then select the best of the bunch to endorse. Any thinking individual. It would be one thing for Ms McCaskill to encourage Mr. Clinton's wife to run for office, but to endorse at this early stage? Idiotic!

Why not actually discuss this instead of the attacks? Why is that where we are as a nation? As a proud liberal, I think that she would make an incredible president. I hope to see it happen. I am not a "compete idiot." I simply disagree with you. It happens. I am guessing that each of you are conservatives. If so (I emphasize the "if" as I have no idea), of course you would not want her. Who would you each like to see as our next president? Let's keep this civil.

Yes. But if Christie runs, I can't give him a chance now. And if Barney Frank comes in, then, sorry Hillary.

Should have known you would have an issue with the avatar. It's from a cartoon called Archer. You can tell from your comments that you are immature. What the hell does my wardrobe have to do with this? Nothing. I can also see reading comprehension isn't a strong suit of yours. I currently live in IL but born and raised in St Louis. Anything else you want to be wrong about?

The only ones that judge their predecessor are the ones that realize the person they elected was a horrible choice and will not admit it. Face it, you guys made a HUGE mistake in reelecting Obama but you want to keep backtracking to place blame elsewhere. I know Bush was far from innocent but that was the past, move on, it's not that hard.

Uh....say's the fool with weird avatar holding a pistol. Um...O didn't place blame I did. Learn to read.....it's FUN-damental

After her actions with Benghazi, should we trust her to be our country's leader? We need to realize that if she was caught in that lie, you know there will be TONS more we will not find out about. And yes I realize ALL politicians lie. But really people, we need someone that is at least a good enough liar to not get caught so easily. She could be trouble.

@Daniel Stout , I agree about keeping things civil. But calling Ms McCaskill an idiot is being as civil as I can get towards this announcement. With no declared candidates to compare, Ms McCaskill as ENDORSED, not merely encouraged, but endorsed one person who has not even declared her candidacy. That makes zero sense. People without any sense are justly called idiots.

You comment about Mr. Clinton's wife are fair and you opinion. I completely disagree based on her lack of performance as the Secretary of State, but that is an entirely different matter. This article is about McCaskill's lack of judgement to rush on a bandwagon. A bandwagon tainted in recent scandals.

Who I would like to see as the next president? Probably someone who never would run for that office. So it does not matter. But I certainly do not want someone who advised not to go after bin Laden, someone who failed to answer the 3am phone call when good people in her department were dying in Libya, and someone who did so very little to bring about the hope and change promised by the administration. I think these points and her stance on many issues will be self defeating for her. Yet knowing all of this, Ms. McCaskill not just joined a bandwagon, she hitched the horses with an ENDORSEMENT of someone not officially in the race, and with no other individuals to consider. Complete lack of judgement.

@Pat Strangler , we still do not know where Mr. Clinton's wife was at 3am that fateful morning. When she finally did answer the phone call, she made some incredible poor decisions.

JamesMadison

@Anthony Merkel , she has not declared. Ms. McCaskill is jumping before anyone has announced. Incredibly foolish. It is one thing to encourage someone to run, but endorsing them before they announce? Foolish and idiotic.

JamesMadison

@Sara Ivie-Trankler , let's see if Mr. Clinton's wife has the guts to reject the endorsement because of Ms. McCaskill's ties to Monsanto. That will speak volumes about their characters.

JamesMadison

@Daniel Stout , exactly what are Mr. Clinton's wife's qualifications? She held failed, secretive healthcare talks when her husband was getting oral sex in the oval office? She went on to run for the Senate on the coattails of her husband in a State she never lived? She accomplished nothing as a Senator with a huge popularity. She ran a failed presidential candidacy against someone with even less credentials than she had. She accomplished nothing as a Secretary of State, and failed to answer the phone at 3am when lives were at stake. She advised not to go after bin Laden. Her qualifications are transparent and weak at best.
