Fr. Xiu Hui "Joseph" Jiang: Archbishop Robert Carlson Subpoenaed in Priest Sex Abuse Case

Categories: Crime, News

Father Joseph Jiang.
One year after Father Xiu Hui "Joseph" Jiang was accused of molesting a teenage girl, St. Louis archbishop Robert Carlson is now facing a subpoena in the criminal case, according to court documents that offer a closer look at the investigation and the priest's response to the allegations.

"Child-molesting clerics may perform the actual assault alone, but almost always there are coverups involving other church officials, usually supervisors," David Clohessy, executive director of the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, tells Daily RFT. "We can't predict what Carlson will be asked or answer under oath. But simply the fact that he has to face tough questions under oath in a pending criminal case is encouraging to us."

The group is drawing attention to new details in this case, including information on text message evidence on the victim's phone and the alleged attempt of the accused to pay off the victim's family.

As we reported in June of last year, Jiang, 31, is facing charges that he fondled a teenage girl (under the age of seventeen) on four occasions last year. The Archdiocese of St. Louis placed Jiang -- an associate pastor at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis -- on administrative leave following the allegations of "inappropriate contact with a high school aged minor." Church officials said at the time that the alleged abuse did not occur at the cathedral or any archdiocesan property.

A spokeswoman declines to comment to Daily RFT on the new documents or subpoenas, saying in an e-mail, "It would be inappropriate for the Archdiocese of St. Louis to comment on cases involving pending criminal charges." Paul D'Agrosa, Jiang's attorney, did not respond to requests for comment.

Officials with SNAP, the St. Louis-based victims' rights group, say that this appears to be the first time that Carlson has been subpoenaed in a criminal case. (In the past, he has sat for depositions in civil suits.)

"We view it as a sign that the long-standing unhealthy deference and trust that many authorities have given to Catholic officials is gradually deteriorating," Clohessy says. "We hope it'll have a deterrent effect the next time a Catholic official is asked to or is tempted to hide child sex crimes."

The notice of depositions, filed last month and on view below, say that Carlson and Deacon Philip Hengen are both facing subpoenas in this case.

In addition to the sex-abuse charges, Jiang is also facing allegations of "victim tampering," related to an alleged attempt to dissuade the victim from reporting the offense.

In this case, the court filing says:

That on June 20, 2012, the defendant, after admitting the allegations to [redacted] and [redacted], the victim's parents, the defendant offered to pay them any amount of money if they let the offense go unnoticed....

That on June 21, 2012, the [redacted] received a text message from the defendant stating that had left a check for $20,000 on their van.

The documents also say that the Jiang was a "close family friend" to the victim as well as the teenager's priest. He reportedly had a key to the family residence, referred to himself as the "brother" of the victim and her siblings and sometimes spent the night at their residence.

Prosecutors are looking to question at least seven witnesses, including Carlson and Hengen.

SNAP also provides a document showing that Monsignor Richard Hanneke, archdiocesan vicar for priests, bailed out Jiang with $25,000 in cash last year.

It would appear that Archbishop Carlson was trying to be compassionate.  Father Jiang appears very guilty. I would like to know more about the circumstances surrounding his departure from China and the apparent supervisory role of the archbishop in Saginaw.  Jiang is 25 and the girl was 15. There is the problem in a nutshell. Recently the Archdiocese of St. Louis ditched the law firm of Greensfelder in an attempt to modernize and gave the job to a woman.  It doesn't look like she "knows her head from a hole in the ground".  Carlson has made some hard to believe legal faux pas.  There is no doubt believing his sincerity.  There is also no doubt of his legal naivete and stupidity.  Get a good lawyer instead of a politically correct one.

I am glad a group like SNAP is trying to help the victims of such terrible abuse despite the efforts of the Catholic hierarchy to make it difficult

One of the secondary but significant failures in the child abuse ambit is the failure to prosecute both the perps and their facilitators - if these criminals are clergy or part of a church hierarchy.

Just as in the era of lynching, local prosecutors and police have proven hesitant to hold accountable the well placed and the well regarded in the community, when in fact a prosecution of such a one is far more likely to deter other, similarly situated community "leaders" who have access to kids by virtue of a sense of trust trust and job description.

I hope the failure to prosecute - such an horrific des-service to victims - is ending, and soon, and that the supervisors of the abusers will at last be held to account for their complicity in ruining the lives of so many children.

Money...is the first thing thought of as a "fixer", to the perpatrator. That is the one common denominator, or the one blamed element, all the outsiders, first think, this is all about. For the victim, no, it is not and it merely scratches the lifelong struggle, to be had, by any victim. That is why I say, this new Pope, it may be peaceful for hm now, but, judges, allow, him to sit next to you when you judge these cases. I promise, tears will stream down his Holiness'face, as he hears the victims' stories. I believe, then and only then, he

Why didn't any of the nuns ask why Fr. Marsico was sleeping over in the rectory with a child. Father also asked in 1989, T., what can I DO, for you, anything, please don't do this to me. I will give you anything you need, just please don't do this to me...I walked out of the restaurant, after refusing to allow him to pay for my lunch....my point, here, just like Fr. Jiu placing that $20000.00 check on the family auto, as a (Snap) Survivor, as an adult now, still, when U read of it or similar, it makes me feel sick. That priest of mine offered me "anything"

For note is the fact, as I too was told via letter from my bishop in Central Pennsylvania diocese, that when I was abused by Father(no-longer)Guy Marsico, that it was done on church property, yes, but done on his own time and of his own satisfaction. I so wish, that I could find the roomfull of nuns, with whom Guy &I, had a meal, in the convent, next Dior, and not a single nun of the 12, asked, "why is Father Guy hanging around and allowing a 12 year oks

May the heavenly intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary and Saint Joseph her most chaste spouse obtain for all those involved (accused, accuser, judge, jurors, prosecutor, defense attorneys, ...) in the criminal and civil cases surrounding Fr. Joseph Jiang every spiritual good they need that these matters might be resolved in a manner most pleasing to Almighty God.

Fr. Jiang is my friend, and I pray for him daily. From all I know of the case, I have great confidence in his innocence. Even so, I pray and hope for mercy, grace, justice and healing for *all* involved.

Also, I would encourage readers here to remember that even though Fr. Joseph belongs to an of late despised profession ("state of life" would be more accurate) -- the Catholic priesthood -- he has the same rights as any of us and should be presumed innocent until proven guilty in an court of law.

My heart goes out the victims and the family. They have been traumatized by the priest, they have been re-traumatized by his actions to escape responsibility, they have been re-traumatized by the actions of the hieracrchy to dissuade them, and finally they have been re-vicimized by the actions of the laity for attempting to hold a vigil for the ... PERPETRATOR. The Church holds a vigil for the perp but not the victim?! And the Catholic hierarchy insists this problem is behind us. It isn't and it won't be until they recognize that the victims are the ones who are assaulted, not the one wearing the roman collar.

This young girl has tremendous courage and her actions to hold Father Jiang accountable are heroic.  Any Catholic Priest who uses their position of authority in the name of God to harm a child, has committed the most horrific of crimes against humanity. If others within the Catholic Church covered up, protected, and perpetuated sexual abuse by Jiang... then they are just as guilty as the man who placed his hands on that child. This includes any Pope who is part of the Roman Catholic Child Sexual Abuse Cover-Up.  I was sexually abused and raped as a boy by a Catholic Priest and I also took action against the priest and others involved in a  30+ year cover-up. Catholic Priests who abuse children and those within the Catholic Church who protect them use force.  This young girl is using true power to counter the force used against her.  Power Always Trumps Force.  This young girl has The Truth on her side.  The Catholic Church is littered with smoke and mirrors.  As long as this young girl and any other victim of abuse remains aligned with The Truth, they will prevail. The Catholic Church continues to protect the greater good of the Catholic Church over the individual and this includes children. Church officials said at the time that the alleged abuse did not occur at the cathedral or any archdiocesan property. All Catholic Priests including Father Jiang are Catholic Priest 24/7 whether they are on archdiocesan property or not. Sexually abusing a child off of archdiocesan property does not release a priest nor the diocese from being held accountable. Priests sexually abusing children and the cover-ups to protect the offending priests is systemic within the Catholic Church. How a system treats its children is a direct reflection of the level of consciousness that system is operating at that time.  Collectively, the Roman Catholic Church continues to operate at the lowest level of consciousness. There is no escaping Divine / Karmic Law. My thoughts and prayers are with this young girl and her family.

Based on the comments it seems we have abandoned innocent until proven guilty.  I have followed this case since May, 2012, and it appears that Fr. Jiang is in fact innocent of the charges.  My sources also say the RFT will be running a revision to many of the lies in this story in tomorrow's reporting.

As a survivor myself, (I was sexually abused from ages 5-12) I am sick to death of the way the Catholic church continues to put children in harms way and then cover up their crimes. Priests and the clergy at all levels should be help accountable for their crimes and cover up. After all, isn't covering up the same as being an accessory? This sure applies to the average citizen. Why should these "religious leaders" be allowed to live above the law?

The church (this includes the Vatican) continues to prove that they don't care about the survivors or doing anything to keep children safe. They only care about their financial assets and  keeping their crimes out of the public eye. I'm glad their dark, dirty deeds are being exposed more and more.

Also, more Judges need to step up to the plate and make these guys actually pay for their crimes. None of this hand slapping "Get out of jail free" options. If my next door neighbor was in court for the same crimes, would the Judges be as lenient as they've been with so many priests and clergy? I think not. I applaud the Judge in the Philadelphia case for sending the message home that criminal priests and clergy will be treated the same as anyone else who commits the same crimes.  No hand slapping occurred there. Thank God, for the Judges who actually enforce the law and penalties on the these criminal Priests and clergy. They have been allowed to get away with crimes against humanity for too long. They should also be get ting the maximum time and made to serve ALL of it!

I would like to see Vatican's Benedict get his day in court. That guy should be doing time, not living the life of luxury at everyone's expense who gives tithes and offerings to the Catholic church. All practicing Catholics should demand transparency and accountability, in background checks of all priests and clergy in their parishes and how their tithes and offerings are being used. You folks could be paying for pedophile movement and/or protection and not even know it.

I thank God for SNAP and a wonderful Therapist who "walked through the fire" with me. If it wasn't for both, it's a strong possibility that I would have tried suicide again and made sure I didn't fail.

As a survivor of pastoral abuse I know first hand how the church continues to try and hide this under their Holy Rug. Never should the victim be the one who is put on trial as I was and I wasn't the one who even committed the crime. The most important thing is to be believed. I had a community turn its back on me and believe this pastor couldn't have done that. Just because they are a man of God doesn't mean the devil can't get in! These pastors and priest continue to prey on the vulnerable and they abuse their power! It's time we quit slapping these pastors on the wrist and the churches who employed them and start paying victims a well deserved settlement for the injustices done to them. The only way a church will ever learn and change is through their wallet! If you have been abused come forward, ask for Gods guidance and strength. The pastor who abused me chose the wrong women. After being abused for two years I finally broke the silence and found strength and believed it was my duty to make sure this pastor would never harm another women as he did me. My criminal trial lasted three years, as well as my civil suit lasting another three years. Eight years of my life were taken and consumed by this but in the end justice prevailed and seven jury members found the United Methodist Church guilty as well as Pastor Donald Dean Budd. So if you have been abused you can do it! Use the resources out there like SNAP, PAVE, The Hope of Survivors Network, family and friends. You can do it just like I did. When you face those dark days as did I just remember there is always light at the end of the tunnel. May God be with you! Samantha Beach, MN

As a survivor of the abuse cases in Kansas City who has been frustrated by the lack of criminal accountability for priests who molest children and the bishops who enable it by protecting the priests rather than the victims, I am glad to learn that the criminal justice system is finally waking up to the criminal pedophilia enterprise being run behind the closed doors of the Catholic dioceses in Missouri (and around the world.) For too long, the law has looked the other way, claiming no authority to interfere in the internal affairs of the church. But serial sexual abuse of children is clearly not part of the internal affairs of the church. It is a matter that affects the safety of children, and that is the concern of society as a whole.

It is good to let the truth be told in this case for all to hear. May it bring needed change to the church and healing to the victims and their families, to whom I extend my heartfelt compassion as one who has walked the same unfortunate path.

The Archdiocese was going to have a prayer service for the vindication of Father Joseph this afternoon, and it was cancelled - Thank goodness... We need prayer services and masses prayed for the victim. Why doesn't the Archdiocese sponsor a prayer service or mass for this victim and all victims of abuse by priests and their families?  They are the ones that are being put thru Hell.

Getting the "supervisiors" such as Carlson and Hengen in court is very important.  They are responsible and just as culpable as jiang if they acted improperly and in a criminal manner in the handling of these these matters.

What is good news is that this apparent devout and dedicated Catholic family acted to defend and protect their children...an aspect of Catholic family behavior that has been sorely lacking all during these sexual abuse scandals past.

Families and supervisiors that do not act, "enable" the perpetrators and therefore share equally in the guilt.

I can't imagine letting a religious cleric spend the night in my house with or without children,  and at my age I can recall the stories in my family relating to life on the early American frontier and the fact that the last person you would trust in a small town was the pastor or minister of the local church.

How dare a church such as this, the Roman Catholic Church, call itself Christian!  I think it is about time that we put Jesus Christ back into the Roman Catholic Church so that we can call it Christian.  Jesus had nothing but scorn for the hierarchy of the church of his time, the Scribes and Pharisees of Judaism, and nothing but love for the 'little ones'.  Now, once again, we have a hierarchy sacrificing the 'little ones' to save their pomp and power.  This is not a Christian church!  I am a cradle Catholic of seven decades  who is running as fast as I can from this organization, I cannot call it a church anymore!

In Australia, we are having at present the largest and most expensive 'Royal Commission' in our history. It is officially about institutional sex abuse, but, as we who have been fighting pedophiles for years know, it will be approximately 80% consumed with the Catholic Church and their criminal behavior. It is expected to take up to 5 years to complete and cost around $400 million dollars! I have been helping to raise public awareness of this issue since going public about my own abuse at the hands of three pedophiles in the 1970's in Ballarat, Victoria. We have had many victories on many levels over the years, but we still have a long way to go in our attempts to rid our society of these criminals. You can Google information on my own, Stephen Woods, and many others efforts over the years. I volunteer with Broken Rites, a support group for victims of clergy sexual abuse, and know first hand of the horrors we are all going through around the world! I would also like to add my voice of support to victims of all kinds of clergy sexual abuse in your area and country. We are all one in purpose and mind no matter where we live.

Further, there is a group of motivated Catholic parishioners in Ballarat, who are pushing the local Bishop Bird into action after much media hand wringing by him. They are directly supporting victims with money they would have once given to the church! It is shocking the Bishop out of his corporate mindset and forcing him to financially back up his rhetoric. I encourage people everywhere to form groups in their church to use the money they would have once given to the church to directly help victims in our struggle to survive.

Fondest regards from the trenches in Australia!

I have friends who have been victims of clergy abuse. I have friends who are family members of clergy abuse victims. I can claim this now as someone who came to the issue not related to anyone involved, but by researching what seemed to me as a citizen and human being, a stab in the heart of the Rule of Law. For so many offending priests, and their hierarchical employers to escape criminal indictments and jail time to the extent they have for so long, absolutely leaves me aghast.

The height of absurdity? Archbishop Timothy Dolan, 2 years ago on "60 Minutes" waving his hand across the lens of the TV camera claiming the whole sex abuse issue was over. Since then, explosions of abuse cases in Europe have deafened any statement that the social structure in the US was to blame. This followed by the Vatican Envoy's ouster from of all places, Ireland, a Crimes Against Humanity case at the Hague left open to the possible entry of new evidence, and a request from the UN for secret files housed in the Vatican say that the issue is just starting to get serious. But, maybe more than any of these easily taken from the headlines events that says this manhunt must go forward without hesitation, is this case involving Jiang and Carlson. It states emphatically that here in 2013 still, the church continues to commit these crimes and is willing to cover them up. How much more does the Catholic Church have to do to slap the face of "Lady Justice" before she removes her blindfold, and with her sword steps down from her pedestal to overtake and bring down this criminal organization.

DrRosemaryMcHugh

Thankyou for this well-informed article.  As a Catholic physician who has met many who have been sexually abused by priests, it is important that predator priests be reported to police for investigation and that they be treated like any other person who commits crimes.

The policy of the Popes for centuries has been to protect predators and to deliberately betray the trust of victims by lies, by denials of the truth, by discrediting the victims if the victims have become alcoholics/drug addicts, even though  addictions developed after the sexual abuse.

Even today, the church is given undue deference possibly due to the hubris of the church leaders, who act as if they are above the law, and we as a society have let them get away with it until now.

There have been many suicides around the world of victims who gave up hope that their stories of being sexually abused by a priest, brother, bishop, or nun, would be believed.

Where is the conscience of the church leaders? They must be made accountable.

Sincerely,   Dr Rosemary Eileen McHugh, Chicago

30+ years after my repeated rape from a priest I still have flashbacks, anxiety attacks, and horrific nightmares. I cannot think of a punishment suitable for the abuse I suffered. I have chronic PTSD as a result. My past and present sometimes feel shuffles like a deck of cards. At times I am the 10 year old boy being raped, other times I am myself.

In my case my parents didn't believe me and even punished me further by having to "confess" my lies and work for him 2 hours a day after school which meant almost daily raping.

My offender fled the country for the phillipines after a cardinal "lent" him $5,000. He used that money to escape procesution.

I as a victim of childhood sexual abuse crimes committed by a Catholic Priest in the sixty’s am victimized over and over again by the Catholic Church’s lack of accountability and cover-ups of crimes committed against children to this day. Government worldwide must hold accountable and punish any perpetrator or enabler of crimes against children in any institution. Any goodwill the Catholic Church may have built up has long dissipated by decades of evidence demonstrating a continued failure to report crimes and cooperate with law enforcement to jail and remove sexual predators they supervise from vulnerable children and ministry.

If anyone has been victimized by Fr. Xiu Hui "Joseph" Jiang or has any knowledge of crimes committed by him I would encourage you to come forward to get help and report him to police. Sexual abuse is a silent epidemic and the silence must be broken. By speaking up you can began healing and protect children from sexual perpetrators in our mist.

I commend the tremendous courage of  the parents & their daughter in reporting this crime directly  to the police.  My hope is that justice will be served & this young person & her family will be made whole again.

The Catholic Church has a long standing record of  protecting  its power, position & assets when the light is shed on sexual abuse by it's clergy.

As a graduate of Cor Jesu and Maryville....whose brothers graduated from St. Louis U High...I understand all to well ..  My brother was sexually abused by Joseph Campbell ..a popular, charismatic Jesuit.    As the wife of an Asian American,  I know the impact on this family.

This family has been thru enough! Their lives have been forever changed for the worse!   We all need to rally around them and support them with our prayers.  We also need to voice our concern to the Archbishop, pleading to him to be completely forthright and truthful about what he knows about this crime and Father "Joseph" Jiangs relationship with this family.  I suggest we have a mailing campaign showing our support for the truth, imploring the Archbishop to stop further delay of this case.  Archbishop Carlson also needs to use his influence to have Father Joseph take responsibility for his deplorable actions!  Please join me in writing a letter to the Archibishop!

I honor the courage of the young victim and her family for stepping forward and fighting back.  The abuse of a child is wrong and criminal.  As a a community, we all have a responsibility to be vigilant and aware.  If there is a reasonable suspicion of abuse the police must be notified.

Regretfully, the church hierarchy has not been diligent in protecting children from clergy abusers.  These church leaders, over decades, have quickly and wrongly dismissed child abuse or have been complicit in coverups of these abuses.

In all cases, report to the police.  Our community will be safer.

Who paid Jiang's $25,000 bail?  Why didn't the AB contact civil authorities in the very beginning?  In other words, it would seem that the authority of the church in ALL of the Missouri dioceses is functioning with the same game plan, in spite of their promises, promises, promises.  This young victim reminds me very much of myself at her age, seduced by a priest playing "god."  Let's get this fiasco on the road, please stop delaying getting to the truth.  It is time that these men who set themselves up as the moral authority for everybody else understand that the good old "trust me" days are long gone.  The church of the Almighty Dollar is about defunct with little chance of survival.  As Harry Truman said, the buck stops here!  So be it!  Sincere best wishes for light and strength to a very brave victim and all of her support groups.

No surprise that the church is still actively covering up abuse in its midst.  It is very sad that they weild their power  to hide the truth because the survival of the institution is more important to them than the spiritual health of the flock and the good of humanity.  Let's hope the Archbishop is actually called on the stand.  Sounds like there are already shenanigans going on in the background to keep that from happening.

The Catholic church is the pedophile mafia, using the power of God to rape children.

Mob bosses like the bishop will lie, using something Catholics made up called "mental reservation", which is lying.  Cardinal Bevilacqua, the "don" of the mafia from Philly, used it when he was asked about ordering the shredding of documents detailing 35 known pedophile priests back in 1994.  The priests were the Catholic child rape hitmen, and the bishops are the mob bosses who lie for them.

God has proven that this isn't God's church, and only satan could run a child rape cult using the power of God and get people to believe it was God's church.

mclellan91

Civil authorities are dealing with the accused.  What's every bit as urgent is challenging in court those who cover up these crimes (not just internal forum sins) and pay off all those involved. We always expected this behavior from the Mafia.  How different are those bishops who are "simply following orders"?  That didn't wash in 1945 in Nuremberg.  Why now? Uncover their secret oaths and promises while you're at it!

Dear behealed, I totally agree with as a survivor myself. I to, found an excellent therapist who has stayed by my side for 24 years. My abuse was I was raped by 3 catholic priests. I will never understand how this institution {I refuse to call it a church} gets away with not paying for their many, many crimes against our children. What is wrong with this justice system? Until Pennsylvania steps up to protect all Children I will never see justice for what was done to me. I too would of again tried suicide, but my therapist saved my life. @kplandes Oh boo hoo!  There have been pedophile priests. How much money will you get and how much will the lawyer receive in the Democratic quest to destroy the Catholic Church? That is the real question. Abuse deserves justice. However, the lawyers involved are shams and charlatans representing the abortion industry.  This is a way to destroy the Church.  There is individual evil and there is corporate evil.  Individual priests have failed their vows and have to answer to God and justice.  However, what about the Marxist lawyers who are using an Achilles heel to destroy a moral organization.  Sin and justice are one thing. The use of the legal system to "hang the Christ on the cross" once again is another.  Most of the lawyers involved are Leon Trotsky clones who have a definite radical socialist agenda.

@kathy512 I respect your courage in speaking out. I have a Jesuit education from St. Louis University and am a Navy veteran. This is all the work of the devil to infiltrate and destroy the Church from within.  You have to stand fast in your beliefs. Maryville too has fallen by the wayside just as Webster (Jacquelline Grennan Wexler) and Fontbonne with its Boston College president.  I would presume that you are implying that the young woman is Asian.  The background of Father Jiang in China needs to be analyzed.  I respect the sympathy of Archbishop Carlson for the situation.  However, his legal maneuvering or lack thereof is completely hard to believe.

@mclellan91 Based on the comments it seems we have abandoned innocent until proven guilty.  I have followed this case since May, 2012, and it appears that Fr. Jiang is in fact innocent of the charges.  My sources also say the RFT will be running a revision to many of the lies in this story in tomorrow's reporting.

mclellan91, I have said many times through the years that it is the bishops that drove the get a way car for these priest perps.

@jacquebquique @kplandes

Yeah, as a devout Catholic youth retreat attending, priestly vocation inquisitive, Catholic school educated, 15 year old, former altar boy turned guitar player in the church choir, I joined the radical socialist movement to destroy the Catholic Church simply by going to church every Sunday as I had since I was born where i was approached by a priest almost certainly known by the Bishop to be a pedophile who was nevertheless moved into my town to start a new parish. I practically threw myself at him because at 15 years old, I intuitively knew that 15 years later, I would finally face the facts about what happened to me and seek help recovering from all the damage I secretly orchestrated as a member of the Movement, including homelessness, addiction and other irreversible health consequences I suffered in the aftermath.

At 15, the Movement and I secretly laid out our grand plan so that 15 years later at age 30 I would start to pull my life together and hold to account those who acted with such careless disregard for my safety and the safety of other innocent children and adolescents (boys and girls) who had all secretly in the past also joined said radical socialist movement to destroy the Catholic Church. And that is when I would enlist my sham charlatan of a lawyer, the only person who believed me after I wrote a lengthy, anguished open letter to the Bishop who never responded even 2 years later when we finally moved forward with legal action, all planned 15 years earlier when I was a devout Catholic youth retreat attending, Catholic-school educated 15 year old former-altar boy turned guitar player in the church choir member of the secret radical socialist movement to destroy the Catholic Church.

I knew that said sham, charlatan lawyer and fellow member of said radical social movement to destroy the Catholic Church would work without pay for almost 10 years before I and  46 other victims in Kansas City ultimately settled with the diocese in 2008 for $10,000,000 (do the math, it didn't go very far) and the promise of necessary changes, promises that in hindsight seem to have been mere lip service to make the problem (victims) go away rather than prevent further harm from happening to children currently involved in Catholic Church activities in the diocese. I say lip service because the same Bishop Finn who sent me a hand-signed letter of apology after the settlement just 2 years later knew about homemade child pornography made by a certain Fr. Shawn Ratigan using parish children as the subject matter. He held that knowledge without action for over 6 months before his vicar general finally reported the problem and diocese lawyers turned the evidence over to the police. I'm sure the young grade school girls were also members of the secret radical socialist movement to destroy the Catholic Church. Fr. Ratigan later pled guilty to several felonies, and Bishop Finn has since been convicted for failure to report suspected child abuse as a mandated reporter in the state of Missouri.

And after all these years, you, @jacquebquique, have uncovered the truth. The secret radical socialist movement to destroy the Catholic Church is exposed, and the world now knows that thousands of children around the world secretly conspired to make it all happen. Foiled at last!

Seriously, lady, your comments suggest you are delusional paranoid and in serious need of psychiatric intervention. I would like to think the bishop would have been so moved by my open letter, he would reach out to me, but he never did. I would like to think that I would have never needed a lawyer, but I did, and she worked tirelessly on my behalf. I would like to think that the faithful would rally around the victims, but instead they write hateful, ignorant comments such as yours. I would like to think that the Bishop's apology was sincere and that it would, in fact, never happen again to the extent of his ability, but it happened again far too soon.

Your comments deny the institutional evil that silenced victims to avoid controversy for the Church as Bishops merely moved known pedophiles from parish to parish where they continued to abuse other innocent children, some who ultimately took their own lives in the aftermath of their abuse. The priests, bishops, cardinals and popes may ultimately answer to God, but they are not above the law in this life, and neither should be the institution that orchestrated a worldwide coverup from the office of then-Cardinal Ratzinger in Vatican City.

It is appalling that you could be so blinded by your loyalty to this obviously flawed institution that you could be so callous and cold toward people—fellow Catholics—who have suffered so much and only ever tried to do the right thing to prevent it from ever happening again to others as it happened to us. The settlement I received was a paltry sum for the impact the abuse I suffered had on my life. It didn't come close to replacing lost salary, not to mention the lost faith, lost innocence, lost health, lost hope, lost security and ultimately the loss of the fellowship of the Church I once so enjoyed. I always say I never left the church, it left me. Your comments further drive home that point.

@vickybearcub Hi, Vicky!  Glad you agree.  This will be an interesting case, what with the predator attempting to buy off the victim's family (where did that money come from?).  This case needs to move forward before it runs out of time, I do intend to write to the AB and hope others will too.  Here in the metro KC area, we have a lot happening as well... All best wishes to you!

@jacquebquique @kplandes Boo Hoo? Really?

We do not fight the same fight.

You are complicit in everything that happened there because knowing all you did about what he was up to, you did not report him to the police. That is astounding and you are a monster. In fact, as a school employee, you were likely a mandated reporter and your comment has probably exposed you to prosecution. You should consult with a lawyer.

And good luck with that because we do not fight the same fight.

Your comment reminds me of the famous quote of Martin Niemöller:

 When the Nazis came for the communists,
   I remained silent;
   I was not a communist.

   When they locked up the social democrats,
   I remained silent;
   I was not a social democrat.

   When they came for the trade unionists,
   I did not speak out;
   I was not a trade unionist.

   When they came for the Jews,
   I remained silent;
   I wasn't a Jew.

   When they came for me,
   there was no one left to speak out.

My life today is filled with peace. I know deep in my heart that I did the right thing, and as long as I am alive I will continue to fight the good fight to prevent what happened to me from happening to others.

We do not fight the same fight. I fight the good fight.

@kplandes @jacquebquique Boo Hoo! I am sorry for your troubles. The lawyers who are taking advantage of the great shortcomings of a few priests are the problem. I taught in a Catholic high school where a reform brother was brought in to reform the school.  He gutted the staff to fulfill his molestation agenda. He subsequently was charged with forty counts of sodomy in three different states. He fired me because I knew what he was up to. I was subsequently blacklisted from teaching.  I am a Navy veteran and you have to keep up the fight against the cancer which is eating away at the Church. I choose to fight within the Church structure.  Archbishop Raymond Burke was driven out of town by these same forces which appear to have taken over the Church in support of gay rights and women who believe in abortion.  I fight the same fight but I do it in a different manner.  I pray for your peace.

@vickybearcub They work for themselves at the expense of all others.  They have brainwashed for hundreds of years, hopefully my generation will be the end for that.  When I read the Book of Revelation it all fell into place for me; take a look, you will see what I mean.  Be well, and safe.

Thank you Kay. This priest is soo guilty! Paying off the family says it all to me. I also will write to this AB. Kay, they are all so evil, they work for the devil!
