The 56th homicide victim in the city of St. Louis this year was killed when an argument over "spilled beer" escalated.

That's according to metro police officials who say that Mario Shackelford, 29, was fatally shot during a fight in Kiener Plaza yesterday evening.

Just before midnight, cops received multiple calls about a fight and shooting involving a group of men around 7th and Chestnut streets. When they got there, cops discovered that three men "who are friends," had been "riding together in a vehicle drinking alcoholic beverages."

The suspect -- a 34-year-old male who police have not yet named -- "spilled beer inside the vehicle causing an argument," cops say.

This man then reportedly retrieved a gun from an unknown location and fired multiple gunshots at Shackelford, hitting him in the chest. Police say the suspect attempted to flee but was chased by a second man, 27, who was not hit by gunfire. This second man tried to detain the suspect and got into a fight with him before grabbing the gun away from him.

Another friend then apparently took the weapon and placed it in the truck of the vehicle until police arrived.

Shackelford -- who lived on the 9400 block of Ardmore Drive in north St. Louis -- was pronounced dead on the scene.

The shooter suffered a head injury during the fight and was taken to the hospital where he is listed in critical, but stable condition, police say.

Charges are pending:

" Another friend then apparently took the weapon and placed it in the truck of the vehicle until police arrived." - should be "trunk of the vehicle" ;)

Sad that this guy lost his life over something so ridiculous.
