Is it time for the Rush Bust to go?

Last year, we chronicled one of the most important controversies at the Capitol centered on the decision to honor Rush Limbaugh in the Hall of Famous Missourians. It got so intense that security reportedly installed a security camera specifically to protect the bust from haters.

And now, one year later, there's a petition to dump the Rush Bust once and for all -- which over the last several weeks has collected nearly 6,000 signatures.

"He's so vile and obnoxious and he has not done anything positive with his life," Heather Woodside, the 36-year-old St. Louis resident who created the change.org petition tells Daily RFT. "Everyday, I hear and read stories. He's basically a bully for innocent people.... He is just a terrible person."

The decision to honor Limbaugh came from House Speaker Steven Tilley, who told a reporter at the time, "It's not the 'Hall of Universally Loved Missourians. It's the Hall of Famous Missourians."

The conservative talk radio host is from Cape Girardeau and got quite a lot of attention last year when he famously called Georgetown law student Sandra Fluke a "slut" and a "prostitute" after she spoke out for women's access to birth control.

The change.org petition has a pretty good summary of some of the more recent offensive statements Limbaugh has made. His bust sits alongside statues honoring Walter Cronkite, Walt Disney, Mark Twain and others.

"When it was inducted last year, I was very upset," says Woodside, who works as an administrative assistant at a two-way radio company. "I couldn't believe that we did such a thing.... Everyone who comes and visits will see him and may think that's what Missouri is all about.... It's an embarrassment."

Recently, Woodside decided to protest more actively.

The petition calls on the governor, lieutenant governor and the State Senate and House leaders to remove the Rush Bust. (Daily RFT reached out to Governor Jay Nixon's spokesman about this and has not heard back).

The petition says:

We need to remove a man's image who makes it his priority to demean women, people of color, immigrants, the working class, the poor and the LGBT community. He is not a positive example for Missouri. Please share! Thank you!

"He's not a scholar," Woodside adds. "He's just an opinionated loudmouth."

I think the bust should remain as a testimony to the idiocy of the Missourians.

So it doesn't bother anybody that a elected state official gathered private donations to pay for this work of art to be displayed in a public building? It doesn't bother anybody that WE THE PEOPLE had no say in this. That the unveiling was a private affair no public allowed. That we now have to have to pay for security cameras to protect this piece of art?

So now to the subject matter. Rush is no conservative he is a cult of personality all to his own. If this were the standard of entry to the Hall then where are the busts of the James-Younger Gang, Egan's Rats, James Earl Ray, and for the ladies Belle Starr. These fine examples have followers don't they deserve as much respect as Rush?

Let's let all those in temporary power decide whom to erase from history. Next election, maybe the GOP erases Obama? Clinton? Perhaps we all should pretend Mao and Stalin never existed. As long as the victors get to rewrite history, let's have them omit history to all opposition, too. Will, you are highly enlightened. Perhaps you will be the next to be erased from history, too.

Perhaps the statue should not have been made, but it is made. Let's not waste more money destroying artwork. What does that say about us.

The protesters completely miss the purpose and point of the exhibit of famous Missourians and show their own bias, ignorance, and lack of understanding about the exhibit. They appear totally blinded by their political agenda. Sad.

Limbaugh qualifies on all fronts to be in that hall. "Progressives" are the new Nazis. Anyone who doesn't think like them must be eliminated by all means possible in their mind set. I deplore their assault on free speech and civil discourse, and their unholy marginalization of anyone who dares to speak up in opposition to their twisted world view.

And thousands of people are now looking at RS because of Chris' post. Way to generate publicity for them.

Again Chris McDaniel I lived there for 18 years and he was as much a public figure then as he is now. I find it funny how you always have to resort to things that have nothing to do with the original debate when people don't agree with your opinion. I guess that's why you will always be right.

Never should have been put there in the fist place.

Good thing you guys live in Illinois, where you can enjoy paying to support your political leanings. As an earlier poster commented, it's not the hall of Universally Popular Famous Missourians. You have proven his fame by your out-of-state vitriol. So thanks.

I think that Chris is trying to change the subject because he knows that Rush is a DB.

I'm sorry Chris McDaniel..wasn't your original question about removing Rush Limbaugh's bust from the Capitol? If that is the question then yes, I believe it is time...that man is ignorant and hateful. If you were somehow asking about the RFT's ability to report the news in St. Louis perhaps I missed that. I think what happened to that young man sounds tragic but remember I work in an urban hospital that is familiar with this type of activity...and it is often not reported in the local news let alone the national news. I'm sorry if your paper let you down. I still think Rush is. DB that does not deserve state notoriety

I thought this was about Rush. I could care less about the RFT.

Sorry Tyrese.. someone Black shot you. You don't get a say in the public forum.

Way to dodge my question, and the issue, just like the RFT who started this bullshit.

Rush doesn't live in your state either.

Chris McDaniel
Chris McDaniel

Oh wait, national news isn't picking up lil' Tyrese's story? That's because it doesn't fit the narrative. Where's your cover story, RFT? Where's the fucking outrage?

Chris McDaniel

This fucking rag is basically Rolling Stone Jr. to me today.

Chris McDaniel
Chris McDaniel

I disagree. in fact, I think rather than inciting this nonsense to deflect the lack of outrage to the Zimmerman verdict, if they were ACTUALLY serving their community, they would be asking why there's no outrage for Tyrese Short, a 9-year-old who was shot to death in his dad's vehicle in Saint Louis last week, but no one can do a damned thing to fix it because his worthless parent won't cooperate with the cops.

You don't live in our state, Becky A Gipson Hopper, so good thing you don't get a say.

Instead of Hall of Fame Missourians, could we change it to Hall of Shame? Limbaugh is a disgrace to humankind.

This man was an Oxycontin addict. So bad that they had to put him in a self induced coma in rehab otherwise he would have died from the withdrawals.

I think Missouri is starting to realize that at the rate he is losing sponsors, he is nothing that should be REMOTELY Idolized. His claim to "Excellence in Broadcasting " is a FAR CRY from what he thinks it is.

It should have never been added. The only admirable thing this man has done is earn a lot of money being a divisive asshole.

It's a "Hall of Famous Missourians". He is famous, & he is a Missourian. He meets the criteria. You don't have to agree with him. There are also former slave owners & junkies represented. Should they be removed?

They should remove Bob Barker and Hobo the clown also cuz it offends me.. Along with Truman, he was a racist.. He hated the Japanese.

Can't stand him or his politics, but the guy has built himself out of nothing. Kudos on that. Just wish it wasn't an empire built on fear and hate. The guy had valid points about 20 years ago

Um. I listen to it. because my dad has it blasting everytime i see him. I grew up listening to it, because it was always on my dad's radio. the very sound of his voice makes me want to vomit bile, because thats what he is. and that is what he represents.

Why is it that anyone that does care doesnt have a "real life"? um. I care. IT IS real life to me. He is the spearhead to every hypocritical mysogynistic idea in this country. His disgusting vitrol is an embarassment to this state. YOU don't care because he doesnt speak out to violate YOUR rights as a man. You have nothing to worry about with him.

@James Madison "Let's let all those in temporary power decide whom to erase from history"

Rush is history?  thank you George Will for the term "bloviating ignoramus".  most people wish rush to be history--gone, out, dead, muzzled, sayonara, hasta la vista, baby.
