On Saturday night, George Zimmerman, the Florida man who shot and killed Trayvon Martin, an unarmed black teenager, was found not guilty of second-degree murder and avoided a manslaughter charge as well. By Sunday, cities across the country had organized rallies to protest the jury's decision in the case that has sparked national outrage about racial profiling and self-defense gun laws.

Locally, hundreds gathered yesterday evening at the St. Louis Justice Center downtown for a "No Justice No Peace For Trayvon Martin" rally, featuring State Senator Jamilah Nasheed and some families who have lost loved ones to gun violence.

Below are some photos from the rally as well as footage from another protest in Florissant that a reader sent our way.

St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay, who has advocated for stricter gun policies, also posted this message on Facebook over the weekend:

My prayers are with the Martin family. A young person died senselessly. His death, the trial, the verdict, the law - these must be elements of a national discussion about violence, guns, race, and the kind of country we want to be.

That is the kind of conversation we could begin here on Facebook, where many of agree on most things, and carry on in other parts of our lives.

Photos below taken by Leah Greenbaum, followed by more photos and videos protesters posted on social media.

Zahmill Manuel: "When they said 'not guilty' I smacked my laptop off my desk. I screamed. I fell down crying. I don't know this boy. I've never seen this boy a day in my life but I felt completely devastated."

The rally eventually spilled out across Tucker Boulevard from the steps of the Justice Center to the lawn at City Hall.

"We're fired up. Can't take it no more!" participants chanted. "No Justice, No Peace!"

Until you all live on this side of the fence, When you're not fed from the golden platter, & the system constantly fails you because it was never created to protect you, (excuse me for being frank) stfu & stfd.  You all sound so ignorant.

I love caucasian people, I have relatives & close friends that are white, but it amazes me how such a majority of "their" people are so blind, oblivious, and/or in denial of the realities here in OUR world, AMERICA. Maybe because in YOUR WORLD, everything is picture perfect, many realities don't exist for you. Racial profiling, discrimination & racism was the bottom line issue of this whole case

TAKE A LOOK...

I challenge you to put yourselves in someone else's shoes, though it may be  impossible for you, try to understand what it would be like to live the life of someone other than yourselves, or people like you. Racism, discrimination, profiling, it all transcends race, it's clear & evident between genders & many other facets of our lives.

Not only "We" (because I am African American,) but also my "Caucasian" relatives & childhood friends, as a community, as a culture, as people, we hurt because of this tragedy with TM. We as a nation have come so far from history, so yes us "black people" expect the law & the system to protect us as well. What happened to TM was wrong. PERIOD.

I bet if they threatened to cancel their welfare checks if they didnt stop, there would be no protesting! Its sad how many uneducated people there are in this world!

Yet a jury decided based off actual evidence (not what the medias telling you) that TM actually jumped him. It was proven that TM went to his fathers house before he came back outside to confront GZ. I am not saying GZ following him was ok, but get your facts straight. Not the spoon fed media crap. The "civil" case wont go anywhere either, the feds have decided it was nothing racially motivated after over 30 interviews.

Yea, let's get the justice dept. involved because there is soooo much evidence this was a hate crime. This case is over folks, that's all!

Wow!!! I'm listening to one of the Jurors, in the Zimmerman case and She says the 911 operater tells Zimmerman "Can you see where he has gone"? meaning Trayvon! is that in your policy to tell us that? Why did she egg Zimmerman on?!? What she should of said is... Stay in your car!!! Not... Can you you see where Travyon has gone... she is the professional!

I have a question. I had a problem with a neighbor who won't keep their kids from leaving their crap in our yard. It's been going on for months and we are actually moving because it's gotten so bad. today, they la kid left his skateboard in the driveway so I ran the damn thing over and threw it away. Later they threw the skateboard at our front door and started to cuss me and what not but then started to say that they were "going to get justice for Trayvon Martin in my white ass" and then called me George Zimmerman and then they were "going to do to me what Zimmerman did to Trayvon". So, my question is, is this what we have to expect now? That people of color get a pass because of this? This whole "no justice, no peace" crap?

St Louis has got to be the trendiest place on earth. Senseless violence happens everyday here, but we're gonna rally and protest and share our opinions over something that happened 1000 miles away from us?

Zimmerman thought he looked suspicious, sure enough first thing trayvon did was attack him. Trayvon was a fighter and the jury didn't even get to hear that and they could still tell he was. He was the racist in the situation and it cost him his life. Teach your kids to use their words instead of just hauling off and punching someone in the nose with little provocation. Let me bash your head into the concrete just once or twice and tell me how you feel.

He never attacked him the guy Zimmerman approached him and then started attacking then the kid got the upperhand either way you put it , it's a cival case now

what was important was not what races these two men are, but what caused the fight which ended in a gunshot. once you answer that, the rest makes more sense. i feel sorry for both families.

African Americans are just upset because they lost their 'diplomatic immunity' that allowed them to do whatever they wanted and cry racism if anyone tried to call them out on it. They played the race card and it failed. Their greatest fear is true equality in which they get charged with hate crime the same way whites do now.

yes he does have to live the rest of his life knowing, out of self defense he had to take someone's life to protect his own.BY his face reaction,it's bitter sweet for him.I did not at one time see this guy smile ear to ear like hell yeah!! this guy is sadden.

ok..so while you are on the watch.and you get caught by the potential criminal seeing you and you over hearing a conversation.are you going to just sit there and get the shit beat out of you while waiting for the police to show up OR are you going to defend yourself? MAYBE the police just need's to end this "neighborhood watch" and hire more police force and do their own damn job's.but then again...the police would have gotten the same blame also.

Mayor Slay's and other politicians' comments on this issue are shameful...taking sides publicly in a criminal case when the side they should be taking is the law.  MrSmith is absolutely right, the Zimmerman verdict represents a victory for the law.  And a reaffirmation that self-defense is a fundamental human right, not something given to us by government.  These protesters will not be silent.  Those of us who defend the rule of law and the right to protect ourselves and our families will not be silent either.  This entire trial has been an excercise in hypocrisy with screaching hordes for the death of a black teen killed by a half latino-white man...and deafening silence for the young black men killed by other young black men everday in this country.  Where is that outrage?  Where are the thousands in the streets every single day?  Be careful African-Americans...it's your bias and racism that's on display here, not ours.

The purpose of the rally is to show opinion. I was brought up..don't sit there idle if you don't like something.

where were all of these folks who are so concerned with "justice" being done when the sequester was passed; limiting police presence, head start, meals on wheels etc.. ad naseum? look in your our backyards people

For those of you who leave a comment saying "the people protesting need to get a job" - this is democracy at its finest and people standing up for what they believe in. In regard to Steve Mincers ridiculous comment - Trayvon was walking down the street and not hurting anyone. This is an issue of race and it is an issue of justice. Equality and justice are worth fighting for, worth talking about and worth protesting for. #justicefortrayonisjusticeforusall

If I didn't, why would we be having this conversation? Clearly everyone heard the not guilty verdict, hence the protest! Your point?

"But no this guy decides to be a hero" if you were being raped...and the person that called 911 had a gun and was told "not to do anything"...would you want that person to not do anything, or would you want him to come help you?

Suawanna Rey Harrington

With everything aside there are good reasons for stand your ground laws. Why should anyone have to fear for their life and not be allowed to defend themselves? White, black, hispanic, or other if I feel that my life or my family's lives are in danger from anyone then I'm gonna do what I have to do to stay alive. Even if that means killing the person. By the time the cops show up they could have already hurt or killed me or heaven forbid my children.

I have something to say to other black readers that might read this article.  When does it stop being about racism and it starts being about work we need to do to become better citizens?  When do we stop blaming others for events like Trayvon's death and we start blaming ourselves?  Why is Trayvon not an isolated incident?  When are we going to stop killing each other, not just with guns, but a culture war in our own communities?  Until we address these issues, Trayvon will have died for nothing.
