Larry Conners, Fired KMOV Anchor, in Talks for New Gig As Judge Denies Latest Request

Larry Conners.
Fired KMOV-TV (Channel 4) anchor Larry Conners will have to wait at least another month before he can accept a new job offer in St. Louis broadcasting.

A St. Louis circuit court judge this week denied the veteran newsman's request to block a non-compete clause in his contract with his former bosses that says he cannot work in the local media market for one year. His request was for a temporary restraining order, but Conners says he and his attorneys will get a chance to make their case at a hearing in September.

"The bottom line is on-air is where I want to be," Conners tells Daily RFT this morning. "That's what I do."

The judge's order means that Conners, who was famously terminated in May after writing a controversial Facebook post questioning whether he was an IRS target, can't yet start a new gig in broadcast. And according to Conners, folks in St. Louis broadcasting are very seriously interested.

As his legal battle with KMOV and parent company Belo Corporation moves forward, Conners tells us that he's in talks with multiple companies -- and not just media organizations.

Larry Conners makes his on-air statement about his IRS Facebook post.

"I've got several discussions in play," says Conners, who speaks to us while on the way to a meeting this morning regarding a potential new job. "I'm looking for the right fit."

Conners, who has been in the news business locally for nearly four decades, got a lot of attention for writing the online post pondering whether the IRS went after him in response to an interview he did with President Obama. Later that day he read an on-air apology (which Conners says he was forced to deliver and could not edit), and eventually he was terminated.

The station's stance is that he violated the journalistic standards of the news organization, and that was the sole reason for the termination. Conners, however, argues that the station had been looking for a reason to get rid of him for quite some time -- in large part because of a past discrimination complaint, in which he alleged that he was unfairly paid less than his co-anchor due to his age. Conners also has repeatedly argued that he did not take a stance on a political issue with the IRS commentary, but simply posed a question.

Now, he is looking for new work and in the meantime is publishing a diverse range of commentary on his new Facebook page, which has developed a pretty large following.

Of the judge's decision to deny his temporary restraining order request, Conners tells us, "It's all part of the process."

Larry Conners.

He says the judge could have thrown out the case altogether, but instead there will be a hearing (scheduled for September 3) in which he will be able to fully make his case that he was wrongfully terminated.

"It's a matter of 30 days," he says, adding of the judge, "She wants to see the evidence. That's good."

Conners says he is optimistic that the judge will side with him in the matter of the non-compete clause, arguing that there is precedent to do so.

"I don't have proprietary information," he says. "I don't have ownership in the company."

"I do have full confidence," he continues, adding, "Thirty days doesn't make much of a difference one way or another."

Mark Pimentel, KMOV's president and general manager, tells Daily RFT, "We're continuing to fight the battle in court," and declines to comment further.

I grew up watching this guy on the news everyday, and I had a ton of respect for him, but I have lost every bit of that respect due to his behavior over the past year or so.

Now watch, he will say the judge is some left wing activist because he wont let Conners break the contract that he signed.  There is another thing Conners is not realizing.  Not only is he known as a tax cheat, but now he is going to be known as a loudmouth jerk who is unreliable.  He wants his contract to be null and void, but thats not how contracts work.  At the rate he is going, he will never get another job on the air because of his bitching and moaning.  Who would want him?  Even FAUX "news" would never use him.

Tim Nelson

OK, he broke the rules on air and that got him fired. What is ridiculous is that they had him read an apology and then still fired him?!? My other problem is if you fired the guy, why get in the way of him pursuing another job. You don't want him anymore, let him move on with his career.

But he was fired for inciting conversation after the news station told the anchors to incite conversations about recent events. The IRS scandal had just broke, and he asked an open question regarding the fact that IRS had cancelled a standing payment plan that he had been paying on monthly. It seems the same as being incapable of getting a new license because you lost your old license for impeding traffic by stopping at a red light. "How dare you do as your told. You'll never work in this town again."

so, it's ok it fire Lary for 1 small comment, but Jaco can post a hatefull letter on both Fox2 and 11? Oh, that's right, Larry was knocking the goverment.

Uh, they fired him for getting personal, but everything channel 4 posts on facebook uses loaded language and tries to sway the reader. wtf?

I agree, it is pretty much sign it or take a different job. I've been in a position before where I can't pursue a particular client when at a new job because it would come too close to the terms of the non-compete agreement signed at a former job. I guess what I should've said is know what you are agreeing to and don't try to find a way out of it later.

Kristy Lytle

I don't think he's was wrongfully terminated. Journalistic standards were not upheld by him when he posted something personal, and appeared biased on the news station's facebook account. Had he done so on his personal facebook then he'd have an argument. He signed the agreement as part of his contract negotiation. I feel that should be honored.

Phil Webb

Non-competes are another one of those areas where individuals are basically powerless. Don't want to sign it? Your employer probably won't negotiate with you; sign it or take a different job. It's like trying to negotiate the terms of your mortgage contract, credit card agreement, or almost anything else. The entity with the power sets the terms; your choice is to accept them or not.

Jolena Shatzer
Jolena Shatzer

You shouldn't sign a non-compete agreement, if you aren't going to honor it. The judge did right by upholding it.

@bluefire88 Channel 5 is fluff compared to Channel 4. Not to knock Ch. 4 but they got the sensationalism down pat.

@Barney Rodawald You're a hateful little pathetic P.O.S. aren't you? You're always online ripping on Larry Conners.  Get a fucking life.  Seriously.  I've seen you on his Facebook page blasting him, too.  What kind of pitiful douche bag "likes" someone on Facebook just to argue with them?  As far as the taxes go... if you don't understand the whole story or the full details at this point, you're too stupid to even have a debate with.  I've had additional taxes pop up before because of an oversight, or in one instance and error on THEIR part.  Doesn't mean you aren't paying your taxes, you dumb ass.

@Tim Nelson Thats not how it works.  He signed a no compete clause in his contract.  That means he cannot be on the air in the St Louis market for a certain amount of time.  Its pretty much boilerplate.  He can pursue his job in another market.

@Kristy Lytle Get real.  The station is going to wind up writing him a big fat check in the end.  This happens in TV all the time -- old people gotta go so they can bring in cheap, bimbos to replace them.

ericmorrisstl
ericmorrisstl

@Phil Webb Yeah but the non compete is designed to keep an anchor or personality from jumping ship to join another station.  A judge could rule that a non compete in this case is pointless if he was fired.  Either way, KMOV looks dumb in the end. If Conners is of no use to them, let him work somewhere else.  KMOV looks like a bunch of bullies (and babies) by dragging this on.

I don't know about him never getting another job, because I've been amazed at what happens in media in the past few years. But as for him blaming the judge if it doesn't go his way, being a known tax dodger, etc., I don't see anything untrue here. And I would add to the list that he thinks he's such a victim, when he's been paid six figures for the past 30 years for reading from a script. Quit your bitching, Larry!

@pfike307 How is anything I said ignorant?  Its all the truth.  As for his problems, he is the one who created them.  Its time for Conners to lay in the bed he made.

smartin13

Great point SMD. KTVI wants him back? Send him to Moline for a year. Or Kansas City. Or Memphis. Local TV owns stations in all those markets. Or maybe Sinclair wants him to head up a news venture at KDNL. They can send him to Peoria, Springfield, Cedar Rapids or Wichita while he waits out his year. My guess is he doesn't really have a firm anything. If he did, he would be moving on with his life instead of trying to break his contract.

tcbo1hilnr
tcbo1hilnr

@jaco1175 @tcbo1hilnr Hey dipshit, where is there any paranoia in my post?  The double post was an accident, saw the report on facebook and went here to post.  Went back to facebook and didn't see it so I posted it from there.  My name is there, plain to see as opposed to yours. Grow up and keep on topic.  As to the horseshit comment, really?  He is a good reporter who made a mistake and lost his job.  I would accept that but to belittle him with forcing an apology just to fire him anyway IS ridiculous and wrong.
