Ride of the Century: St. Louis Cops Aim to Fight "Reckless Behavior," 2013 May Be Final Ride

Law Enforcement Agencies Join Forces to Ensure Safe Roadways During "Ride of the Century" Motorcycle Event

On Wednesday, August 28, 2013, the Metropolitan Police Department, City of St.
Louis, St. Louis County Police Department and the Missouri State Highway Patrol will
announce at a press conference combined efforts to combat reckless behavior of motorcyclists during the "Ride of the Century" motorcycle event in St. Louis.

During the weekend of August 30 to September 1, 2013, hundreds of motorcyclists will
converge in the St. Louis region. In past years, participants have been known to block
highways, travel the wrong way on roadways drive erratically to evade law enforcement while completing dangerous stunts. Stunts are commonly preformed in the middle of both vehicular and pedestrian traffic areas, with no regard for traffic laws or signals, and create dangerous driving conditions and often cause automobile accidents. Participants commonly flee from officers.

"At past "Ride of the Century" events, motorcyclists have demonstrated incredibly poor
judgment and hazardous behavior, putting not only themselves in danger, but risking the safety of law abiding citizens," said Chief Sam Dotson. "This type of behavior will not be tolerated and violators will be cited or arrested."

St. Louis County Police Chief Tim Fitch added, "St. Louis County officers will be
vigilant in our efforts to ensure that citizens can safely travel the streets and that all
motorcyclists participating in illegal and hazardous activity will be penalized."

Captain Ronald Johnson of the Missouri State Highway Patrol states, "Citizens and
visitors travelling on Missouri highways can be assured that this combined effort will focus on maintaining uninterrupted traffic flow and focusing on the safety of motorists."

Working with law enforcement agencies throughout the region, we will coordinate
efforts to ensure motorists remain safe on roadways during the event.

ROC is an annual event that may disrupt your weekend commute for a half of an hour while a wheelie train gives you a free show. You're entertained by far less every other day of the year. STFU and continue to peasant about life fearing everything they feed to you including the ever terrible WHEELIE!!! Me and my 400 lb bike might break a window and leave a nasty dent and some blood on your door. You'll be fine.

I'm not scared of them, but I have had way too many close calls while I am out trying to work. One of these days I'm going to be picking the guts of one of them out of my car and then paying vehicular homicide insurance rates for the rest of my natural life.

Stay out of my way on the freeway. I'm not swerving out of the way if you pull some stupid shit right in front of me.

Very cool to see the stunts in a closed in area, not so much on I-55.

I've been to Sturgis four times and the only thing the ROC has in common with Sturgis is there are a lot of bikes.   Comparing Sturgis to the ROC is like comparing a Neil Young concert to the Vans Warped Tour.

Not if bikers are pulling tricks like that on public streets.

I am sorry but go play stunt boy in a parking not on the open road, people already hate or don't understand motorcycle riders to begin with. So stay off the highways. The cops have every right to act the way they do. I ride a motorcycle, I rode 1300 miles this weekend. Was I speeding maybe so, would I blame the police if I got pulled over, NO! Be responsible doing that shit down the interstate is a bad idea and should not be tolerated.

if somebody is doing this next to me on the highway or a street,,,I WILL TAKE THEM OUT BEFORE THEY HIT MY VEHICLE !!!!

I must be the only one who isn't scared of guys on sport bikes. I think it's cool. I wouldn't do it but man it looks fun.

@andrew kettler no, the folks who do this have very good control for the most part. They just shouldn't be doing this shit in traffic.

St. Louis can get tourism dollars other ways. These guys need to be kicked off the roads. They are a serious threat to public safety.

No, bikers who ride like this very rarely have control od their vehicle

What do you expect from a group that calls this the "ride of the century" and it happens every year?

Leslee Brown

Not at all. I've been on the highway when one of these idiots pops a wheelie. If they crash not only are thy going to get killed or kill someone else

I say make St. Louis the street biker "Sturgis". It's $$$$$ the city could use. Don't waste the chance to capitalize on this.

Clyde Rhoads

On private property or an empty parking lot, i see nothing wrong with it. On public roadways, NO WAY. The police are well within their rights to pursue the stuntriders. The riders have no "right" to break the law on public roadways.

Jerry Foster
Jerry Foster

no, they are a danger to all those trying to drive normally!

Tamara Terese Carey

It's not unfair, it is warranted. Lots of them are doing exactly whats pictured, some of them are doing a lot worse. It halts traffic, people get hurt and it just creates problems everywhere they go. I have nothing against bikers, in fact I like them! But this is dangerous. If they were just endangering themselves, fine. It's their life. If they want it to end as a bloody mess on a highway, fine. But they endanger others who were just trying to get to their destination.

Robin Gray

No, these are public roads. The laws need to be obeyed

Drago N Hide
Drago N Hide

Not if they do what's pictured - in traffic.

Andrew D'Angelo

They need to be prohibited from operation on public roadways...called "careless and imprudent operation of a motor vehicle". Nothing more than a major traffic hazard endangering innocent people on the road.

@RiverfrontTimes how about the cops ramming bikes, they can say they dont as much as they do but that is a lie. You cant stop 3000 bikes

Glenn Taylor

I've considered mounting a couple of six foot 2x4's on the truck. Leisurely drive down the interstate and see how good their " skillz" are.

Noah Alexander

There is probably a constructive solution here, but it's a little hard to control a bunch of idiots on sport bikes. Let's face it, they have probably been injecting the weed and worshiping the devil which combined with a machine that weighs under 400 lbs and has 180 HP, is downright crazy. 1. You could turn this into a charity based event where they close down the highway but everyone pays to do it. 2. Drones shooting missiles at riders would certainly stop the event in its tracks. Nobody has time for a missile attack. Nobody.

Steve Mincer
Steve Mincer

yaa...let's shut down 170 for a few miles on the weekend to "attract" some business.

Steve Mincer

these guys are douchebags when they cut in and out of traffic on the highway going 100 miles per hour.

Brian Wittling
Brian Wittling

Isn't there a track right across the river here that they can go and perform their stupid "stuntz" at, in a private controlled environment? Seriously people, there are ways to go have your fun and not endanger everyone around you...

Ryan Masters
Ryan Masters

Most of those riders deserve to get hit by a semi-truck.

Alex Carlson
Alex Carlson

The event isn't a problem per se, but the idiotic behavior like a group of riders blocking traffic on the interstate so some of them can stunt, or blowing through a police barricade, is obviously unacceptable for a variety of reasons. Unfortunately that sort of juvenile and dangerous tomfoolery happens at all sorts of motorsport-related events - even the middle aged rich guys with cars costing close to a million dollars will sometimes pull a burnout in traffic while leaving an otherwise sedate parking lot car show in a tony neighborhood. If there was a way to compromise, let the ride and gathering happen but contain the inevitable stunting and other dangerous behavior, the ROC could become a sportbike version of Sturgis. But I really don't see that happening unless the organizers as well as the authorities make it clear that such behavior is unwelcome and won't be tolerated. And the unorganized "outlaw/underground" nature of the gathering makes that compromise doubly unlikely.

Justin N Rachel Hager

Allow these people to come out and speed around and do tricks and spend their money. Market the event, not prevent it

@Ray Thomas And this post will be used in your trial when you are convicted of Vehicular assault or murder. This would be called premeditated kids.

@snapper1978 @RiverfrontTimes and this is why you fuckers need to be stopped even if it takes bullets to do so. Fuck all of you. They should just run over you next time, peel out over your brainless head and charge your retarded next of kin the cost of the damage to the taxpayers property in doing so.
