Over the weekend, police in O'Fallon, Illinois got a call that shots had been fired. When they investigated the scene, they found that no one had been hurt and that the shooter, a 42-year-old man, had apparently fired shots to scare off his daughter's boyfriend.

The incident -- which amounts to a city ordinance violation -- wouldn't be all that newsworthy if it weren't for the fact that the suspect just so happens to be the chief of the Washington Park Fire Department.

"He discharged a weapon within city limits," O'Fallon Police Captain Jeff Wild tells Daily RFT. "Three rounds into the ground."

Norris was charged this week with disorderly conduct and discharging a weapon in the city, which are misdemeanor violations, Wild says.

The official police report is not yet available, but Wild says police believe Norris fired the shots in connection with his daughter's boyfriend.

"He was trying to make him leave.... trying to scare the boyfriend off," he says.

Norris, he adds, did not fire at this individual and no one was injured.

The fire chief -- recently appointed to head a department that has struggled through substantial layoffs -- was apprehended by O'Fallon police on Monday and released Tuesday after he apparently posted a $120 bond.

He will have to appear in court on September 19.

Daily RFT left a message for Norris at the Washington Park Fire Department and we'll update if we hear back.

Do any of you americans ever think about how cowardly it is to use a gun? Just wondering, where I live there`s not much problems with guns, if someone acts up we just whip his ass with our bare hands. Pulling out a gun and firing into the ground to scare off some douchebag, pathetic, he had two broken arms or something and just had to use a gun?

It is not illegal to fire a gun into the ground. Dumb cops. All they had to do was to let it go. There was no threat and no need to aggressively waste resources to do the arrest. Terrible town.

Wouldn't the gun itself scare most people off?

@thunderokc In some city limits there are codes that prohibit subjects from discharging a firearm within the city limits. I know this for a FACT, because my town is one of them and I work with those "dumb cops" Each city has its own set of city ordinances that the public has to abide by, no matter how trivial they may seem.

@laxx1559 Probably not all people since alot of us know that the biggest coward is the guy who pulls out a gun first. Same with dogs, the bigger and meaner the dog is the more cowardly the owner is, seen it so many times. It never fails, you should watch out for people with no guns, the gun guys are just cowardly pussies who needs a gun becasue they are to weak and their skirts get in the way, poor babies, their mommies didn`t love them enough you see and that turned them into weaklings and cowards, a.k.a gun lovers.
