St. Louis Cardinals 2013 Yearbook: Stan Musial Through the Years (Excerpts, Photos)
Musial becomes the eighth player in major league history to reach 3,000 hits, stroking a pinchdouble to left off Cubs starter Moe Drabowsky at Wrigley Field on May 13....
May 21: The Sporting News quotes several baseball immortals who congratulate Musial in reaching the 3,000-hit plateau. Nap Lajoie, the third player to reach the milestone (in 1914), says, "No one can begrudge Musial any honor he achieves. He's a credit to the game and deserves every recognition." Paul Waner concurs. "I was very much pleased to have Musial enter the 3,000-hit club," says Waner, who collected his 3,000th hit in 1942, Musial's first full season. "He's one of the finest players and gentlemen this grand game has ever produced."
Musial savors the milestone with wife Lil, who makes her way to the front row for a congratulatory kiss moments after the historic hit, before joining Stan on the field postgame.
