Ride of The Century Fatalities, Arrests: Michael Evans Clips Cop Car, Crashes, Police Say

Ride of the Century roadblock last year.
After days of increasing tensions between police and the Ride of the Century participants, two riders died in crashes over the weekend. Many others were arrested and cited for a range of violations.

Metro police yesterday identified the victim in one of the fatal crashes as Michael Evans, a 32-year-old Harrisburg, Illinois resident. According to cops, he was speeding with a group of motorcyclists at around 6:05 p.m. on Saturday near an unmarked police vehicle on duty by Elizabeth and January avenues in the Hill neighborhood in south city. The group of riders were allegedly traveling southbound -- in the northbound lane.

Evans' motorcycle clipped the unmarked cop car while attempting to pass on the right, according to police.

The motorcycle then fled off the roadway and struck a pole in the wooded area by January Avenue, the incident report says. He was pronounced dead on the scene and the officer was uninjured. The full report from the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department is below.

Here's footage from KSDK (Channel 5) from friends mourning Evans.

Meanwhile, in St. Charles county, the Missouri State Highway Patrol reports that Justin Rohe, a 25-year-old St. Charles man, ran a red light at around 1:35 a.m. on Saturday. His motorcycle then allegedly collided with a woman driving a 2008 Pontiac traveling northbound on Mid Rivers Mall Drive, making a left turn onto westbound Ohmes Road.

Rohe, the highway patrol says, was thrown from his motorcycle and pronounced dead on the scene a short while later.

Police did not have injury information for the 49-year-old woman in the other vehicle. The full report is below.

It appears both fatal victims were part of the Ride of the Century. Rohe wasn't directly involved in the event at the time of the accident but had reportedly attended a press conference on Wednesday in support of the ride.

As we chronicled last week, law enforcement agencies across the region strongly emphasized that they would be cracking down on reckless and illegal behavior, prompting some participants to accuse police of exacerbating tensions and unfairly profiling riders. One St. Charles sponsor even canceled a Ride of the Century event amid police pressure, prompting a Columbia venue to step up and host.

Ride of the Century was founded by a group called Streetfighterz, a five-member St. Louis-based motorcycle stunt organization.

Police promised arrests this year -- and delivered.

On Friday, according to the metro police department, officers observed at least nine motorcycles "driving recklessly," arresting all of them around the 4100 block of De Tonty Street in the Shaw neighborhood. One of the motorcycles had a stolen engine, police note.

All nine were charged with careless and reckless driving and one of the riders faced a receiving stolen property charge. Two of them were cited with expired license plates and no operator's license charges.

Captain Ronald Johnson and motorcyclist Jason Cadell argue about the methods employed by police during Ride of the Century.

The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department says in a statement, "The safety of our citizens and visitors is our top priority. While we welcome motorcyclists to our city, participating in reckless and dangerous behavior on our roadways will not be tolerated. All violators will be cited and/or arrested."

On Sunday, KMOV (Channel 4) says police made 15 arrests and towed 25 motorcycles during the final stretch of the ride. Ten of those arrests were reportedly for traffic charges while five were for stolen vehicles.

On Saturday, highway troopers reportedly towed ten motorcycles at a south St. Louis motel.

Here's KMOV's report on the arrests followed by the full police summaries.

The SLMPD summary on the fatal city accident.

Incident: Fatal Accident
Location: 2300 block of January
Date/Time: 8/31/13 @ 18:05
Victim: Michael Evans, 32-year old black male of the 600 block of Webster
An officer was operating an unmarked police vehicle on duty in the area of January and Elizabeth when he observed several motorcycles traveling at a high rate of speed, southbound in the northbound lane. He felt an impact on the passenger side of his vehicle as the victim's motorcycle attempted to pass him on the right. The motorcycle left the road way and struck a pole in the wooded area on January. The victim was pronounced deceased on the scene. The officer was not injured.

And the Missouri State Highway Patrol on the St. Charles death.

"Evans' motorcycle clipped the unmarked cop car"  They need to release the dash cam footage for me to believe they didn't run him over.

The riders in ride of the century are the ones with the bad image yet every media source I have looked at there has been wishes of violence and slandering of ALL street bike riders from citizens. Everyone is making them out to be bad yet you look at the numbers of fatalities, arrests, and tickets compared to the number of riders in the 3 day event and they are a mere 2% of the ride of the century population. Missourians have done nothing but say ignorant things and provoke these people since the first article was aired early last week. There are multiple videos of cops illegally towing bikes and making false arrests available but the media is scared to air this side of the story because of the good feedback they get from the negative 2% of the riders. The 10 bikes at the Red Roof Inn that were towed, there is video footage of cops walking up to the bikes feeling if the engine was warm and if it was they towed them, there were multiple problems with cops unable to justify arrests and I do seem to recall the roadblock setup at the wall on sunday when missouri law prohibits roadblocks and checkpoints that specificly target a certain group of motorists. People keep saying stuff about the facts, the fact is the system is corrupt and fail to follow the laws they are on duty to uphold and citizens make threats and wish death upon all motorcyclists. Here is my wish, I wish you would hang up you fucking phone stop stuffing you mouth with fast food because I am absolutely sick of distracted motorists nearly hitting me on a daily basis. People in here talking about the saftey of others, remember that shit next time you answer your phone or send a text while traveling at 60+ mph on the highway.

I think the MO State Highway Patrol, St Louis City, St Louis County and St Charles Sheriffs need a big shout out. It was nice that the ride LEFT St Louis completely and didn't end up with 70 plus MPH chases in densely populated subdivisions!!!!

What does BWB refer to? Bitch Wuss Biker? That is the only thing that would make sense. Because this motherfucker was a fucked up pussy for kicking a defenseless man off of his bike, severely hurting him, and then speeding away. Maybe you meant to say POS, or CUNT...but that is only if you are referring to the shit head who initiated the assault.

i agree some of them ride reckless but what about the ones who didnt do anything and ARE getting profiled by cops and needlessly gettin hit by cops. both sides are in the wrong no matter what--the bikers need to calm down alot BUT so do the cops

Eric- I see you work for MoDot. Isn't there massive fines if a worker is injured by a car in a work zone?? Sport bikers need a lesson from the law- that protects YOU at MoDot for the same reasons. Public safety and limits on speed on the road. You are stupid for not getting that!

Some people do things to make me look at their life's and say why do they do that but its not my place to judge people for their differences, so shut up and respect that some one has died.

You will be judged by the company you keep. If you know anyone who does wheelies on the interstate or otherwise rides like a jackass, and you don't tell them to knock that shit off . . . then you are just as much of a problem as they are. I don't feel sorry for the guys who die doing things that selfishly endanger innocent lives. I do feel sorry for the families of any clown who pancakes while playing douchebag. I would say I feel sorry for their friends too . . . but any true friends wouldn't have stood by or egged them on while they acted a fool.

Somehow, we have to find a way to help the police put a halt to these squid assholes. We have a year to plan, so don't forget. Between them and the wannabe 1%ers, they are making it rough on law-abiding riders!

Something seems fishy. He just happened to hit an unmarked cop car before crashing? That seems pretty strange....and more likely that a pig ran him off of the road. They love doing that kind of stuff.

truth of the matter is he was killed by the cop whether that was his intent or not, and if his friends stopped the cops would have taken their footage. Yes there is footage of him swerving at mike evens and its being given to a news outlet currently.        Cop have a responsibility to not be hunters and that what this one did

If you are a motorcyclist who wants to end the stigma their vehicle gets, then you should not be participating or supporting Streetfighterz. No more dead motorcyclists!

Maybe if the media wouldn't give it the title "Ride of the Century" it wouldn't seem so cool to ride on public roads acting like jackasses. A group of these guys went past us on I270 a couple of years ago and were absolutely out of control and put everyone on the highway at risk. A bunch of morons.

@snapper1978@RiverfrontTimesBullshit. But just in case things are the way you say, I'll repeat this for you too. Do you really think most of us give a fuck? The guy was driving like a fucking prick swerving around a cop car, so what are the cops supposed to do? Just let all these fucksticks continue to break laws with no recourse? Please. As far as talking about the cop's 'responsibility' all I have to say is don't make me laugh. None of these crotch rocket driving narcissist cockholes take any responsibility for their own stupidity, it's "the cop swerved into him". "the woman must have run the red light", "he wouldn't speed", "he didn't stunt", etc. Balls. So all have to say to you and the others who are trying to gain sympathy here is get the fuck over yourselves and fuck you. I'll say it again, no one gives a fuck. This asshat drove like an ignorant prick and he died like an ignorant prick. End of story.

@toofastm3 Lets see that beautiful bean footage. No really... lets see that footage of the officer "killing" this guy. It would have been downloaded before the body was cold! I call BS on it.

@Robert Phillips , and hundreds and thousands obeyed the traffic laws. You cannot penalize the masses for the stupidity of a few. If that were the case, no one would be able to drive a car since some still use public roads for racing.

mozzy636

@Brian Brown you might say they were conspiring to commit the crime?

@TiredOfWhineyHicks @jaco1175 @RiverfrontTimes LOL, sounds like one talented cop to wield a side view mirror with such deadly precision. I guess since the city is dogshit and cops are all Hitler you won't be coming back here again right?

TiredOfWhineyHicks
TiredOfWhineyHicks

@jaco1175 @TiredOfWhineyHicks @RiverfrontTimes The dogshit in this city is created by the citizens of this city! Its so typical of you people to blame it on someone else. The crime by every day citizens in St. Louis is so much more higher than that of this event. To answer your question by the way yes I was there and watched the cop swerve on him so keep running your mouth and think you are speaking for everyone. Im tired of seeing st. louis on the the list of most dangerous citys in the country police your own citizens piece of shit.

@TiredOfWhineyHicks @jaco1175 @RiverfrontTimes Were you there fuckface or are you spouting the same tired garbage as the rest of the fuckfaces who claim over and over 'he didn't do nuffin! Them poleece murdered him!'? Shut the fuck up yourself you insufferable douche. And remember this as well, the police acted the way they did because most of the people who live here are tired of this childish dogshit in our city. Get a clue motherfucker.

@TiredOfWhineyHicks @dahays @JamesMadison First off, Learn how to read an entire sentence before you attack someone. I never said it was "Right" I said that

"  The masses get penalized for the mistakes of the few all the time. Thats the way it goes. Police your own riders. "

If you can't see that this happens to every group I can't help you. Talk to anyone that owns a firearm or a Pit Bull or lives in a certain zip code. Everyone has perceptions of everyone else based on the way they see them. Not "Right" but it is true.

If those riders want to be seen as something other than a group of hoodlums, they need to do something as a group to combat the perception. Posting videos and comments all over the web that are combative towards the police and the public are a sure way to have future events end up like this last one.

I personally have no issue with riders of any kind, either the "Harley Crowd"  or the performance bikes. Just act like adults when your driving on public streets. Keep the stunts to private areas where if you fall, someone won't run you down.

See it is possible to post without profanity....

TiredOfWhineyHicks
TiredOfWhineyHicks

@dahays @JamesMadison That doesnt make it right, land of the free? no land of if you do something someone else does and the other does something dumb you get labled as the same as that person what the hell is this high school grow the fuck up
