Blockbuster Finally Bites the Dust; All St. Louis Stores to Close

Categories: Bidness

Blockbuster's parent company Dish Network sent the following release Wednesday:
DISH Network Corporation (NASDAQ: DISH) today announced that its subsidiary, Blockbuster L.L.C., will end its retail and by mail DVD distribution operations by early-January 2014. The company will close its approximately 300 remaining U.S.-based retail stores, as well as its distribution centers.

"This is not an easy decision, yet consumer demand is clearly moving to digital distribution of video entertainment," said Joseph P. Clayton, DISH president and chief executive officer. "Despite our closing of the physical distribution elements of the business, we continue to see value in the Blockbuster brand, and we expect to leverage that brand as we continue to expand our digital offerings."

The Blockbuster By Mail service will end mid-December and will serve existing customers until that time.

Over the past 18 months, Blockbuster has divested itself of assets in the United States, as well international assets, including operations in the United Kingdom and Scandinavia. DISH will continue to support Blockbuster's domestic and international franchise operations, relationships and agreements.

I left Blockbuster Video years ago, after they sent a debt collector after me for $11.00 in late fees, without warning...

If they have a close-out sale, think Christmas gifts!

That's what they get for gouging people for years in bogus late fees. Karma will always catch up with you! See ya BB!!

Sadly, their on-line rental service totally sucks too.  Finally fired them after their service continued to plunge downhill.  Poor management, as usual.

What!? No way! Everyone that has closed around here had a sign that said, "THIS LOCATION ONLY". There is no way they are closing them all! The sign said!

The internet has not only brought down a minotaur, but lubed it up and inserted... :)

For some reason, the one at Jamieson & Chippewa is ALWAYS busy (or at least not dead).

I didn't like them when they were popular. I was sad to see Hollywood Video die the same death though. My tastes in movies aren't the same as Blockbuster.

As much as I like rental stores I'm glad Blockbuster is going. Not happy for people losing their jobs but have had problems with the company for years. Kept getting my account mixed up with someone else and froze mine while showing the other guys' name on it (this was while showing them my card with my name). Tried to take care of it but finally said screw them.

Kinda sad seeing the one by our house close in Maryland Heights. Spent a lot of time in that store over the years.
