Tina Turner
Tina Turner is no longer an American citizen.

After living for two decades in Switzerland, Turner, who is fluent in German, signed a voluntary relinquishment of her U.S. citizenship on October 24, according to the Washington Post.

Turner may have been born to poor sharecroppers in Tennessee, but St. Louis claims her as our own. She moved here at sixteen and, a year later, met Ike Turner at Club Manhattan over in East St. Louis, Illinois.

Still a student at Sumner High School, she quickly joined, then became the highlight, with the rock & roll pioneer's band, turning the Kings of Rhythm into the Ike and Tina Turner Revue.

We can understand, though, why she'd want to leave the country where she met Ike. After an abusive, fourteen-year marriage, they divorced in 1976. Turner married her long-time partner, German record executive Erwin Back, in July at the age of 73.

Turner took her oath of Swiss nationality in April with the intent of relinquishing her American citizenship.

Turner won three Grammy Awards, including Record of the Year for What's Love Got to Do with It, in 1984. She was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1991.

Terrible headline, writers. Do you know NOTHING about her? C'mon, the RFT is better than that.

A lot of people will balk at Tina giving up her citizenship, but if they had the same resources available to them as she has available to herself, they might very well do the same thing. The lack (or perceived lack!) of choices and options tends to make people rather ethnocentric - if you know what I mean. (Translated: You might do the same thing if you were in her stilettos.)

not everyone can afford to do this, wwwish I could

We live in a free country. That means we are free to move away and give up our citizenship.

I love this woman...have seen her live more than any other performer. The best compliment I ever received was that my legs were as good as, if not better, than Tina's!

Can't you be a citizen of both countries, i.e., Dual Citizenship?

After watching the interview with Oprah after her marriage it was my understanding she was getting her affairs in order after all she is nearing her mid 70's. Downsizing her properties here in the US. Preparing for the last years of her/their lives. You go Tina!

Oh well, she's been out the US for so long anyway. No big deal. Next story....

I would NEVER give up my Citizenship, it's her call, but I think it's sad.

I don't blame her. In fact, she should have done it decades ago. As a citizen living abroad, you still have to pay US taxes. So basically, she was making a donation.

What's America but a second-hand Great Britain? (Only completing the song lyric here; no politics implied.)
