Illinois House Approves Same-Sex Marriage

Gettin' married in Illinois!
The Illinois House of Representatives voted to approve gay marriage Tuesday, making it the fourteenth state (plus Washington, D.C.) to expand marriage rights.

Two other Midwestern states -- Iowa and Minnesota -- have also legalized gay marriage, but legal gay marriage in Illinois means much shorter trips for same-sex couples in St. Louis looking to tie the knot, since a 2004 constitutional amendment prohibits gay marriage in Missouri.

The bill passed the house with a 61-54 vote and now travels back to the senate, where it was passed in February and is expected to pass again. The bill's final stop is with Governor Pat Quinn, who watched today's house vote and has said he will sign.

A.J. Bockelman, executive director of PROMO Missouri, calls the Illinois decision "part of a national trend that Missouri has bucked." In the 2012 general election, Maine, Maryland and Washington voted to approve gay marriage while Minnesota blocked an amendment that would prohibit it.

"It's been a series of dominoes falling around this issue, and it's influencing the national dialogue," Bockelman says.

Illinois is the fifteenth state to allow gay marriage.

Bockelman also points to the small number of Republicans around the country crossing party lines to support gay rights. On Monday seven Republican senators voted in favor of an employment nondiscrimination act protecting LGBT people -- just enough votes to avoid a filibuster.

"You're starting to see a shift that it's no longer as much of a partisan issue as it once was," Bockelman says. "Now you're seeing a movement among some of the Republican strongholds to come to a middle-of-the-road approach."

Illinois State Representative Ed Sullivan was one of the few Republicans expected to vote in favor of the state's same-sex marriage bill. He told the Chicago Tribune he was voting in favor of gay marriage after being influenced by his mother-in-law, who he said is a lesbian.

Yay! Divorce for all!

I can't wait to hear any new arguments for alimony.  There was an interesting article about how more and more heads of households are women and when a divorce occurs they are having to pay alimony and child support and describe it as being unfair.

The Illinois Divorce Attorneys are eagerly anticipating the increase in business and income.

Good for them to finally realize there is no point in trying to block people from their own pursuit of happiness.  Perhaps the GOP extremists should start paying attention?

America still fails to see the correlation between sin and it's economy, but let me make it a little clearer. As liberal minority continues to "make strides" of "progression", our economy continues to tank and fall. --- For example: I have just figured out the mathematical, scientific, on-paper facts about Obamacare and it's affect on just me and my family. The bottom-line, at the end of the day statistic is this - if just one member of my family has just one major hospital bill for anything, from giving birth to a major diseased that requires about 2 days or more of hospital stay (anything costing about 10,000 dollars or more)... this means that the annual budget for my family (the next 12 months mind you) will be dedicated to paying medical premiums, for after all is charged and billed and all the deductibles are met, we are left with about $50 a month. ---- This means that, if we can't pay our medical bills, leans will be taken on our house. This means we cannot move from our house, which we need to do. ----- and I can't be the only one who has made this comparison. ----- But, you go ahead and ruin America so you can satisfy your animal, fleshly, groin-based desire to make the choice to go to Hell when you die... you go right ahead, honey, and destroy this once-great country.

Perhaps this is the spark needed to ignite urban renewal in East St. Louis. A welcoming place were ALL are equal minutes from oppression on this side of the river. Hmnn... reminiscent of "slave state", "free state."

@smdrpepper -- If you mean the government healthcare website as "the Exchange", then yes I have visited and reviewed that site and it's policies (once I was technically able to do so, you do know that site is still not working properly and you can't sign up for healthcare, right?)

However, I was able to get the rates from Obamacare and found that they are pretty much higher than what my wife's job offers for healthcare - I have been out of work for 5 years / thanks, Obama.

In other words, the mathematical facts and figures I have presented demonstrate the lowest / best-case-scenario that my family now faces.

I know it's hard for pin-heads like you to understand, but there is a direct correlation to how electing a Muslim Socialist like Obama can destroy a capitalistic economy; actually, the fall of our economy started a long time ago, just before World War 2, with another Democratic Socialist President and his determination to "radically transform" the United States of America into the socialistic nightmare we now have.

Homosexuals being able to marry represents their desire to destroy all things American: first, it will destroy the economy - I just read a report yesterday that says we will lose a lot of our tax breaks beginning January 1st, 2014. It also ruins the markets: I won't visit a place of business where someone with AIDS or immorality works. Acceptance of this sin ruins the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence as well - it hinders my right of Pursuit of Happiness. The intolerance of the Heterophobics causes my rights to be diminished, such as the right to Free Speech. Queerness has already set our population against our military: how is that good for the country?

Oh no, smdrpepper --- it is you that needs to grow up. Like the Bible says:

1st Cor. 13:11  When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.

@cartoonsubmarine And let me guess, you never once bothered to go onto the exchange..

Anyway, what does this have to do with the topic on hand?  Seriously, grow up.

@J_Mak It's offensive because not many people really think about what's really happening, or if they do, I guess they are too smart to tell you online. Either way, it's sad in this country when common sense has lost to selfish desire and perverted whim.

Notice: I give a lot of facts that you can look up for yourself, while most who don't like what I am saying reply with "you're a horrible person" or "this is offensive to me": both are relative opinions, not facts.

I have read over 300 books on the subjects of religion, politics, science, and history: one thing I have learned over the years. Liberals tend to answer sound information with ridicule, mockery, and insult, because in reality, they have no answers to back up their claims. All they have is ridicule, insult, and mockery: when they can't attack the message, they attack the messenger. Par for the course, and sad, really...

In short, the prevailing Theories of the modern and post-modern thinking processes (such as the Big Bang Theory, the Theory of Evolution, the Theory of Relativity, the Theory of the Social Contract, etc.) have ruined the ability of the everyday man to make Critical Analyses of important subjects. In fact, most people don't even know that a good dictionary can clear up a lot of ignorance in this world. (For example: did you know that the word "theory" does not mean "fact"? It means "an educated guess, a hypothesis, the opinion of a man or a group of men"? I bet you were taught that Theories meant "facts not proven": that also means "a guess", but you were brow-beaten and brainwashed to think it means "a fact".

J_Mak, and others: do yourselves a favor. Instead of spewing your personal opinions on the internet and instead of burying your noses in an I-pad or a smartphone, why don't you do something good and honorable for a change, and consider moral matters as if they meant something to society. Quit being so selfish with your "I want (x)" and start considering what the majority of people want, because if we don't, we all lose what little freedom we have for the sake of what the minority wants. There's the correlation: just look at the last 5 years at how Obama is fulfilling at least one campaign promise: to fundamentally change the great nation of the United States of America.

Oh yes, he changed it -- it was once the greatest, most respected nation on Earth. Now, look at us -- economy on life support, gas double the price from 2007, unemployment is still double-digit percentage (unemployment was single digits until Obama took office), Muslims have us at their mercy, health care is getting ready to be as crooked as car insurance already is, Americans are dying on American embassy soil, taxpayers eat Raman dinners as Obama and America-haters eat Ramadan dinners... at our expense...

You find those comments offensive, J_Mak? --- Good: So Do I! --- so, don't get mad at the Messenger: get mad at the One who is causing the message to unfold! Obama is the enemy of this country - not people like me.

@cartoonsubmarine This is honestly the most offensive City Pages comment I've come across, and that really is saying something. You are a truly horrible person.
