Missouri's Minimum Wage to Increase by 15 Cents Per Hour in January

The Missouri Department of Labor will increase the minimum wage to $7.50 per hour from $7.35 on January 1.

The 15 cent increase follows a 2006 ballot measure where Missouri voters overwhelmingly approved cost of living increases for the state minimum wage.

As prices of everyday goods -- including health care, groceries and childcare -- continue to increase, experts say the 15 cent boost helps families keep up with costs.

"It means that our hard-working neighbors can buy as much bread and milk at the neighborhood store next year as they were able to buy this year," says Lara Granich, director of Missouri Jobs with Justice, which was part of the 2006 campaign to increase the minimum wage. "The cost of living adjustment in Missouri's minimum wage keeps the lowest paid people in our economy from falling further behind."

A full-time worker in Missouri will earn $15,600 with the increase.

Families with more children are struggling to make ends meet, even with the increase, says liberal think-tank Economic Policy Institute. Child care costs consume 11 percent of the budget for a two-parent, one-child family, but those costs nearly double to 20 percent for two-parent, three-child families.

A two parent/two child family in St. Louis needs to bring in $64,332 a year to secure decent housing, according to the institute.

The federal minimum wage is $7.25 an hour. In Illinois, the minimum is $8.25.

And this means the price of food, gas and other consumables will increase to offset the wage increase so then the working poor are right back where they started from and so in a few years it will increase again, then again and so on and so fourth. The federal reserve needs to stop printing money, so it has value again.

So, a collectivist joins a conversation and thinks pointing out your philosophical position is the same as constructing an argument against it. Silly and meaningless you are, Robin Gray.

I know its cheaper to live in Missouri than Florida where I live now, but I am fairly certain a fifteen cent raise is not going to help anyone.  Considering that the cost of everything has gone up by dollars and not cents, perhaps the minimum wage should have followed that.

I can DEFINITELY survive on $7.35 but I'm independent and motivated and my parents didn't raise any beggars or whiners... except for my one brother... he does gets a little whimpery sometimes.

And 52% of people earning minimum wage will still get at least one form of gov't assistance! Yay us! All the while companies say they can't afford to pay a living wage yet rake in record profits every year.

Oh man, I wish Illinois would lower their minimum wage so I could save 2 cents for every dollar! In fact, I wish everyone in the world worked for free. That would do the trick. Then everything would be oober cheap.

Here is a reality check for all the crybaby wanna-be slaveholder's... Who are you to demand any wage from anyone you work for beyond what you BOTH agree on? Nobody can make you work, and if you don't like the pay you leave. Worse, who the fuck are you people having children when you can't make more then minimum wage??? Until people are forced to deal with the consequence of their actions, you'll never see anything change.... You'll just have more moochers. - End all welfare - End the minimum wage - separate state and economics If you can't make more then 7.35 an hour, you should NOT have any children. And, you should have taken life more seriously. Quit asking everyone else to fix your mistakes, moochers! P.S. While this 'cost of living has gone up' company profits have went down, but who gives a fuck about the people making everything we covet, huh?
