Red-Light Cameras Catch Shooting, Car Crash in the Delmar Loop; Suspect Flees in Stolen Car

Red-light cameras caught a shooting in the Loop Sunday evening that left a 21-year-old man in critical condition with gunshot wounds in his back.

An unknown shooter in a black SUV opened fire on the car stopped on southbound Skinker Boulevard around 7 p.m., hitting the driver and causing him to back into the SUV before hurling forward and crashing into westbound traffic on Delmar Boulevard.

St. Louis Metropolitan Police are now searching for the suspect seen in the video crawling out of the back of the vicitm's car like something out of The Fast and the Furious, checking that the coast is clear and hobbling away. He stole a car and fled, leaving a 9mm and illegal narcotics behind, police say.

Red-light cameras at the intersection of Skinker and Delmar boulevards caught the incident, starting after the gunshots. The victim's car swerves into oncoming traffic on Delmar Boulevard, sending pedestrians scrambling for the sidewalk and pushing two other cars to run the red light to escape.

Police are asking for help identifying the man in the video who runs away from the scene. Tips that lead to arrest are eligible for a $1,000 reward. Call the anonymous line at 866-371-TIPS with information.

Continue reading for a play-by-play breakdown of the shooting, with images from the red-light-camera footage.

You mean a red light camera was there and it didn't stop this? I fully expect everyone that ran that light to get a ticket..

No kidding. Shall we "celebrate" the 1 month anniversary? The annual event? RFT has succumbed to trolling itself these days.

Question! Why don't police know who the victim's passenger was? Is he refusing to tell police? And if so why isn't he being charged for the gun & drugs??

When I was a kid I sold newspapers on this corner after school. There was a neon sign for Ray Bluth bowling over the building on the SW corner if I remember right, on the Skinker side.

St.Louis is losing out by not touting its' most famous pastime :(

The Loop Trolley could be armor plated and fitted with bullet-proof glass.

Tourist to our city could experience first-hand the view of thug life  AND gaze at our residents to the "left of the bell curve" in their natural habitat.

That whole neighborhood is turning into a human zoo, time to get used to it (and maybe provide entertainment by watching it). Put a live web cam on that intersection.

We can call it Diversity TV On The Loop.

Whats wrong with Wash av.? Live and work in downtown. Only problem I've ever had is the drunk dumbass white frat boys that think they don't have to follow any rules or laws. Or the dumbass drunks from out in the county that come to Soulard and piss on peoples property. Keep your dumbasses out of the city if don't like it.

That's why Stl is a terrible place to go. I barely wanna go there for cards games and stuff. As far as someones comment about public space, when ur out in public there's no privacy. If u want privacy, then don't leave ur home.

The loop is as safe as any other area of St. Louis. Its never going to be Mayberry!

My problem is with the red light camera owned by a private company that keeps all this video of our public space

I don't know... I've been jumped at the metro link station before (this was way back) and I've also seen some drug deals go down. That to me is stuff to worry about and an environment where I hardly regularly go to. Also what if one of those bullets where a stray and hit someone and u also think that person just chilin at the light now had to worry about their car because it hot smashed into. I'm not knocking the loop, I love it... It's just we hardley go down there because of stuff like this.

We've hung out in the Loop regularly for years at night and have never seen anything remotely like this. Unless you're a thug whose got beef with another thug (obviously the case here), you have nothing to worry about.

@jaco1175, wow, why introduce skin color in a discussion that does not involve it? Thugs and cops are to be judged by the content of their character. Thugs, by definition, are of low character. Cops cover the spectrum - more good than bad. with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr's birthday approaching, perhaps you'll see one race of people - the human race.

JamesMadison

@DonkeyHotay, correct. Most police officers will not fire wildly into a crowd; whereas, a thug will to make ciaos to better escape the scene of a crime. That does not mean ever cop will only shot a person who is presently endangering others, but the odds are far more likely that a thug will do so before a cop will. Fortunately, most cops have never pulled their handgun from the holster while on duty. Keep it real.
