The Best Homophobic Freak-Outs Over the LGBT Exhibit at Missouri History Museum

Missouri is on the verge of launching the first mainstream queer museum collection in the region, prompting some epic freak-outs from anti-LGBT commenters on Facebook.

The collection of gay St. Louis historical artifacts -- including drag-queen outfits, protest signs, pride-parade souvenirs and more from the last 60 years -- sits in Steven Brawley's basement for now, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

The Missouri History Museum is eyeing the piles of memorabilia, called the St. Louis LGBT History Project, for a queer history exhibit.

"I almost don't want to say this, but it feels like another barrier has been crossed, to have the Missouri History Museum embrace our stories," Colin Murphy, editor of LGBT magazine the Vital Voice, tells the Post-Dispatch.

Not everyone loves the idea of documenting the largest modern-day fight for civil rights in a museum exhibit. Here are the four lessons we learned from the homophobic freak-outs online, shared via Facebook statuses:

1. History is over.
Spending taxpayer dollars on any history exhibits is just frivolous during these trying economic times, say commenters. No museum is better than a gay one.

2. Everyone's minds are stuck in the gutter.
Commenters seem confused between the planned LGBT museum exhibit and a screening of XXX gay porn.

The award for strangest freak-out goes to John Gardner, who e-mailed Vital Voice marketing representative Laura Wagner at work to find out how gay sex works.

I wonder if Bernini's "Sleeping Hermaphroditus" (currently residing in the Louvre's permanent collection) were to visit St. Louis, would all these people be freaking out this much? What about the naked "David"? Take a walk on over to the Art Museum which has been under budget EVERY year for ages and instead of that money being reappropriated and reinvested to somewhere that brings more money into St. Louis (like the zoo), they just buy more art. And guess what? A lot of art features naked people doing a lot of randy things! A couple of rainbow-colored buttons shouldn't make you blush.

The fight for equal rights is a part of Missouri History, whether you like it or not. There is a beautiful mural in the Missouri State Capitol of Missouri history depicting the selling of slaves!!! The subject is shameful, but pretending something didn't happen and sticking your head in the ground doesn't make our State better. However this pans out, the fight for gay rights will always be a part of Missouri History. I only hope we all end up the better for it.

Freedom is a really great American catch phrase until the gays are involved. I also get a chuckle from the "righteous on high" stone throwers, spewing god's supposed rules and regulations for us to see. I understand though that change is hard for people especially when new ideas and laws contradict peoples beliefs and faith. the gay rights issue is not going away and absent minded opposition will only make its progression swifter.

I addressed the point made regarding privacy of bedroom choices, not the museum of which I have no problem with. In brevity, government-backed same-sex marriage would hurt as follows:1) Higher medical premiums 2) Higher taxes to pay for the financial benefits of homosexuals and the social costs that result from increased illegitimacy (including crime and welfare) 3) Loss of free speech/religion rights (as is now in the case of Sweden and Canada 4) More intrusive and restrictive government regulation to impose the new politically correct morality on children (through school indoctrination--despite the health concerns and moral objections of parents), and churches 5)

That's so funny because Tony Albers *is* gay. Outed and all. But he does go against the grain with many things, including the gay community, in of itself.

Long story short Teresa Metz. You and those here using this book to spotlight others "sin" and not your own, are idiots. None of you know anything about this book you use to justify your own HATE. And you all will be judged long before any loving homosexual. Fact. ~ Everyone is born ignorant, yet one must work extremely hard to remain stupid.

Teresa Metz, it's funny how you people LOVE to quote the bible for others "sin". Yet, NOT your own. Instead of dwelling on homosexuality, which obviously has nothing to do with you, how about you work on your own! Have you ever been divorced? Any of your relatives been divorced? Adultery? Were they all virgins? Were YOU? Do you lie? Dont lie about lying! Do you wear clothes of different fabric? Do you eat seafood? YOU are an abomination as well. So get off your self righteous, high horse. By your logic, you might ask for forgiveness, yet you then go back and break them again. Sorry, but asking for forgiveness, and then continuing to break these laws, rules, DOES NOT mean you are forgiven. Lmao. You will be judged by the same "God" you are soo eagerly offering homosexuals to. So from now on mind your own life. Get on Facebook EVERYDAY, and start naming off your own Sins. Im sure many of them would be punishable by death, just saying. And since you, like many think you know about the bible; which YOU DON'T. Let me provide you with some information that you can also Fact-check. That is, if like many also, you aren't LAZY. The passages your kind, uses to persecute homosexuals, were not directed to, or specifically intended for homosexuals. If you weren't so lazy and researched the language, definitions, and context in these passages, you would know your word-of-mouth indoctrination is FALSE. You people need to QUIT listening to these pastors and preachers with an agenda to keep their lavish FREE lifestyle, at the expense of lazy uneducated simpletons like yourself. Ask questions. Listen to historians and scholars, that study in great depth. NOT some guy that stands in a Tax-free building, with a Tax-free home, and Tax-free life, passing around a plate asking for a certain percentage of your weekly paychecks as offerings "to please the lord"!!! Didn't "God" make the universe? What the hell does he need a dollar for? The definitions, language, and words in these videos are very easily researched. And are FACTS. It's a man-written book. That has been re-written MANY times. (This year conservatives, have announced plans to "revise" it again.) King James, also had MANY texts re-written and even omitted to please his liking. Ironically, he also had several homosexual affairs. ;) Though I know 99% of you wont even bother to watch the videos, much less research the information. Its soo much easier to hold onto your FALSE justifications. Idiots.

I just never could understand how people could get all up in arms over what someone else does in their bedroom.  Its the same with every single one of the bible thumpers issues, they just want to have their eyes on what anyone else does.  Perhaps they should actually READ their book of  myths before cherry picking which passage they think backs them up.  There is this whole sequel that talks about not judging others and loving everyone.  It was a real hit, even had a new religion based on it.

To Lena and all those of you use religion as your sole reason to object to homosexuality: You can quote selected Bible verses, but in your religious/faith development, surely you've read the verses, "Judgment is mine, sayeth the Lord", or "Let ye who is without sin cast the first stone", or even "Judge not, lest ye be judged yourself". The Bible is not some anthology of literary works that you can pick and choose to read. Either you obey the word of God - ALL of the words, or you commit a sin of omission when you follow the verses you agree with, and omit those with which you disagree. Note that my post uses no profanity or inflammatory/derogatory language, so if you choose to respond, please extend the same courtesy to me.

My tax dollars go to many things I detest, war, finance of religion, and things like the DEA. What and how exactly are you paying for their bedroom choices? Do you feel the same way about the history of slavery, and or women's suffrage? I ask bc the argument you are using were all used against changing those laws as well... It's history, in the history museum, and guess what, since the dawn of humanity, there have been gay people, inherently they have history...?

Since you said please lol. Look at 1 Corinthians 6:9-10. It mentions several types of sin, so if you commit these sins, ask for forgiveness and if you have given your heart to Christ, you will be forgiven. But if those who believe homosexuality is OK and they die in this sin, how can they be forgiven? The Word of God says you will be damned, so it is up to God. After all He made Adam and Eve, NOT Adam and Steve. Peace and Blessings!

Please show me the scripture in the New Testament that specifically quotes Jesus as saying homosexuality is wrong. I'm curious. What people do in the bedroom is private and for the straights to think that having a gay exhibit means pornfest is absolutely hilarious!!

Are you serious? Some of these people are upset that the museum is having an LGBT exhibit have no problems with a Rush Limbaugh bust with armed guards around it preventing defacing. The bust itself was at least $10,000, plus a salary to protect the thing.

^^^what does this exhibit have to do with "bedroom acts"?

Scott T. Prather
Scott T. Prather

Mutatis Mutandis: as long as it isn't required of me to pay for it via tax dollars, then bedroom privacy holds; when I am forced to pay then bedroom "privacy" is no longer private, rather, it's a public policy issue and, thereby, subject to public scrutiny. Keep bedroom acts private, just don't demand I pay for it and cry "privacy, privacy!" when standing against such enforcement.

Freak outs? RFT, you're digging deep on this one and this is probably why you continue being an example of shitty journalism. I support the LGBT community, but this article isn't doing anything positive for the LGBT community or the exhibit. The freaks outs are typical responses coming from typical religious right wingers. SO SHOCKING! I've read bigger freak outs on Amazon product reviews. Way to stir the pot RFT!

I grew up in the southwest and it amazes me how many here in stl want to keep things like they were before civil rights. You may not agree with how someone lives or their race etc but if you were a true christian you would not judge and all "sin" as you call it is created equal. So you calling people names in a hateful way is just as sinful as anything else but you hard core "christians" love to spin the bible to suit your personal beliefs. You should accept every person on individual merit period. I can't wait to take my kids to the exhibit! I will support my lgbt friends n family and I am proud to do so.

Lena Wheat, you need to get a dictionary and an education. And, by the way, I'm an Atheist, and I don't like supporting your churches with my tax money either. And that is forced on me. You're ignorant. Own it. And it's evident, like many, you don't know anything about that man-written book you're using for your justifications.

Be patient, Norma. Not too many years ago there was the same outrage over african american civil rights and interatial dating. Hell, even women's rights were considered outrageous. Their voice of ignorance will eventually dissipate.

Um no some of us just don't support this lifestyle..which is our right as Americans. Not agreeing doesn't make people ignorant. Telling people they're wrong because of their religious beliefs makes u ignorant.

I am well aware of the issues that you r stating, yet i pay higher medical premiums for me, my child, and my partner, one because my child and i are considered 1+ dependant , and then her own premiums. Y all because we arent a "family..." we have a very bright 8 year old boy, iq of 106, far from illigitimate ... yet as it stands we both pay higher taxes because we r considered "single." I love working my ass off, paying 4000 in taxes, bringing home 900, and supporting the children of heterosexuals who dont wanna work, provide, let alone support their own children... hmm im sure legalizing this would cause debts, cause.... oh wait we are already in debt, not because of gay people...

Whats really funny about the bible thumpers and this quote is if you really think about it, Eve would have been at BEST, Adams sister, but is more likely his own daughter.  I guess they are all okay with incest.

SethEvandor
SethEvandor

Adam and Eve did not know right from wrong, just as with every believer, fear was the only reason they wanted to obey. When the fear did not work, they were punished for basically being an imperfect creation. If morality truly comes from scripture and the word of God, they would have known that they should not have disobeyed. "Evil" tried to gain their trust, Adam and Eve had a decision to make and neither choice would be selfish. They were in a position just like those with courage to go against those who oppress and silence them. This would of been no matter if their imperfections did not exist but if they were left with humanity then they would still be an imperfect creation.

Peace and Blessings from Satan.
