Burglar Steals Savings, Tips from "Dr." Dan Drake, Courtesy Diner's Pancake Artist

Dr. Dan the Pancake Man
In the two months since his pancake artistry went viral and jettisoned him to accidental fame, Dan Drake saved enough in Christmas tips and gifts to hang up his Courtesy Diner polo and pursue pancakes full-time.

He hid $1,500 in a lockbox in his closet, put in his two weeks at the South Kingshighway diner and began to dream big.

But in keeping with the adventitious rise of south city's "Dr. Dan the Pancake Man," nothing is going according to plan.

Thieves broke into Drake's apartment Monday and stole the lockbox, indefinitely postponing dreams that had only became possible weeks ago.

"That money was going to make it so I could focus on the next chapter of my life," Drake tells Daily RFT. He was dreaming of launching a custom-pancake food truck and going on a national tour before the theft. "When this guy stole this money from me, it was more than just taking money. I'm not greedy. What this money represented was this disgustingly stressful period of my life. I already put this investment in, and now it's gone."

Before he even called police, Drake flipped on his phone camera and posted a video on Facebook to show friends and followers how drastically his luck had changed.

"For the first time in my life, when I go to sleep, I think, 'Let me make sure my knife is by the bed in case this motherfucker comes back,'" Drake says. "That's the angriest and most hurt I've ever been."

In the few days since the theft, Drake's plans have changed. He's not sure how he'll afford to move out of his home, where he says he no longer feels safe, but he's launching a Kickstarter fundraising campaign as quickly as he can to capitalize on his national support and recoup his losses.

Drake is asking for $15,000 to start a mobile novelty pancake catering business -- far less than the $75,000 he'd originally wanted to trick out a brand-new food truck. With his introductory video filmed and his bank account set up, Drake hopes to launch his crowdfunding campaign Friday, weeks earlier than he'd anticipated.

"This screwed around with my plans," he says.
Continue reading to see how Drake will spend the $15,000 he's asking for.

The Kingshighway location. Sun-Wed from 6-2, I believe. You'd need to call to verify. :)

I guarantee you whatever they took from him will be returned 5 fold, if he just keeps doing what he's doing.

Hopefully this guy will get some attention from a reality show producer or a local company that will agree to sponsor him. He's really talented and it's a shame to see his dreams get taken away like this.

He still works there right now...stop talking and go get some from him. He could use the tips to rebuild his savings that the burglar took. :D \,,/

Also the kickstarter is gonna be a week or so still. The banking hurdles I've gone through in the last two months are STUUUUUUPIIIIID. So many forms and signatures and faxes and verifications and UGH. Please, St. Louis, bear with me

Anyone that thinks I've been rude to them was probably hallucinating or actually has no idea which one of the affable white folk I am. That, or they were exceptionally rude to me first and it was a graveyard shift. Or maybe I'm just too honest when I'm asked a question. Regarding the pancake art and me enjoying it, yeah, dude. I LOVE cooking pancake art for people. I LOVE fulfilling their requests. I LOVE to make new friends, and see their face when I flip that pancake and different parts are different colors and everyone goes. "WHOA THATS AMAZING" What SUCKS is having tables of 5 strangers drive in from Arizona so their adorable kids can request scooby doo and spongebob, while the restaurant is packed and I've got to cook for a crapload of people that actually are just there to eat, not to revel in my accidental pancake fame. I make $5.25/hr plus tips, and the thing is my tip percentage has gone DOWN since I got famous. It is kind of soul crushing. What I WANT to do is start a business where I come to your private event and cook pancakes for you and your patrons, for an hourly rate. If we cater other food, we'll have a second chef. I want to focus. I want to smile. I want to do parties and shows and weddings and meet people and have all kinds of crazy fun and road trips and music festivals. I didn't put the money in the bank because I do not have a car and I must coordinate ahead of time to do that. The Christmas season was stupid busy and stressful for me, and I had justified the stress because I was making more in tips. I had plans to go to the bank the afternoon of the break in. Ha ha, oh joy. And I never explicitly asked for sympathy. It's really cool that I'm getting it, but I definitely don't want charity. There's lots of cool stuff on the kickstarter as backer rewards, and I've already had a good enough life, give the charity to someone who needs it. It's not about the money. It's about my dream. That nest egg was the rocket fuel to get me there, and, whoops, guess god's got other plans for me Never been so angry in my life. I'm not an angry guy, usually, either. But it was pretty easy to let it go when I heard all this support was coming my way. I'm professional, too, regarding the potty mouth. But if there's a publication that doesn't care how I talk, I'm just gonna talk like me. The stigma on swear words is dumb, so long as you're not being an asshole to someone. And that's about intent, not vocabulary. If it's a part of your business model, I'll accommodate your needs, but if you just discredit me because I say the f word in the riverfront times, I personally think your priorities are a little off-kilter. But that's your business, not mine. Holla

Diners are my favorite kind of restaurant. I've been to every diner in the STL area. Dan's the best short order cook/waiter I know of. Great attitude, really cares about strangers having a good meal, funny. Terrible that this happened to him.

I couldn't imagine Dan being mean to anyone that was being rude to him first.

I've only heard bad things about this guy not that I think he deserved to get robbed, he did not of course.... But after only hearing several stories from different sources about him being rude to my friends it's hard to feel sympathy just saying...

If you're going to start a business, you'll need to deal with a bank (taxes, payroll, paying suppliers etc), might as well get used to it. He sounds like a nice guy who learned a hard lesson. I hope they start a gofundme account somewhere for him, this might have been the best thing that could happen, maybe more people will donate to his cause!

@Lauren Rinker I'm friends with Dan and he loves making pancakes for people, the thing is now he works 10 times harder and makes virtually the same amount as before. That's why we are starting this Kickstarter for the pancake van.

I'm sorry for the circumstances you are experiencing. I see the frustration and anger that it has caused. I have never met you or heard of you until this article. I think you have a unique idea and are very creative. Less "F" words would propel you further! I love helping those in need.........but the profanity was a turn off dude. Stay positive, be a good role model, everything happens for a reason. Good luck!

He was rude to your friends (maybe; [citation needed]) and therefor you aren't upset that he got robbed for 1500 dollars. SEEMS LEGIT BRO. Best of luck with your sociopathy!

With his busy schedule (the diner, two successful bands, & other stuff), he probably just prefers to build up larger bank deposits less often instead of running back & forth there every time he has a few bucks to put in.

If you're old enough to have kids and be married, you are too old to be offended by words. Is this some Bible thing? Because "fuck" was totally a commonly used word back in 1st century Judea and I'm sure the all-powerful creator of the universe is deeply offended by it.

1. a person with a psychopathic personality whose behavior is antisocial, often criminal, and who lacks a sense of moral responsibility or social conscience.

That's the definition of sociopathy .... It is not really a question of morals i.e. I said he did not deserve it that in its self is empathy... Which is the understanding of another humans emotions /relating. Sympathy is different that's understanding and having a reaction with that said I hope he gets 1500 not 15000 and I'm not helping

Blua

I think the point is that cursing and threading to stab people make him sound like a sociopath you should really look it up
