Letter to the Editor: Please Shovel Your Sidewalks, St. Louis!

If he can do it, so can you.
Even with a sturdy shovel in hand, the foot-high snow banks left by this weekend's winter storm seem impenetrable.

But before you decide to wait for this week's warmer temperatures (if you can call below freezing "warmer") to melt the snow on your sidewalks, consider this note from Daily RFT's new architecture blogger, Chris Naffzinger.

Naffziner, who lives in Tower Grove East, has been urging his neighbors to shovel -- for themselves, for their neighbors, for elderly or disabled people living nearby. He's even offered to shovel neighbors' TGE sidewalks himself for free.

Naffzinger sent us this heartfelt plea about looking out for neighbors in the snowstorm:

I love St. Louis and the friendliness of its residents, but every winter I'm surprised that so many people don't shovel their sidewalks.

I've been told by some they drive everywhere, so it doesn't matter to them. But I would like everyone to think of the people who don't have cars and have to walk. After the last storm, I saw an elderly disabled neighbor walking down the middle of the street; the street was safer, ironically, because the sidewalks were sheets of ice, trampled down by people walking on the snow nobody had bothered to shovel.

You're not going to get sued; it's an old urban legend. But you could make someone's life a little easier later on this week when people and students have to start going back to work and school.

Just shovel your sidewalks or pay $10 to a neighborhood kid to do it for you.

Fact is y'all, the *property owner* is responsible for maintenance of the sidewalks, not your city. If you have a sidewalk, some owner down the line paid for it or it was factored into the cost of your new home. Sidewalk jagged and heaved, from tree roots maybe? Yeah, *you're* responsible for fixing that shit. So, get off your arse and go shovel!

How the fuck am I liable for something I don't even own? Riddle me that? The city owns my sidewalk and those pickpocket fucks can clean it, or not. Fuck them. lol. You're in the loop... rotflmao! And, yes, people can sue you if they get hurt on your property, but the sidewalk isn't my property. I'd rip my sidewalk out, but then you fucking asshole collectivists would demand an easement right, and/or I'd get sued by the state for messing with who's property, again? Get your retard sign at your local gov't agency... sigh. In fact, I have a friend who lives in Washington, Mo, and he got jumped by the scumbag public union thugs for cleaning up the school sidewalk, after a storm a few years back (limbs, leaves, etc). Fact is, even the state will fuck with you, because that's their fucking milk machine. That's hours they can charge at 3-5x the rate of private industry. Bureaucracies.... That's how they work. Fact is, the laws are subjective, which means they are stupid. Like you.

Everyone must judge. But, what you judge as good or evil, is dictated by your standard of morality. Mine is objective, and your own is subjective. I don't think you know what the word "democratic" or "socialist" mean. There is no god (metaphysical contradiction), and there is not a SINGLE ARGUMENT justifying altruism. Take all the time you like. Altruism=Otherism....

Hey, I know the internet might be hard for you, but try replying to my actual comment. Socialism by its very definition doesn't recognize my property rights. Quoting wiki, "In general, socialists view private property relations as limiting the potential of productive forces in the economy. They believe private property becomes obsolete when it concentrates into centralized, socialized institutions based on private appropriation of revenue until the role of the capitalist becomes redundant. With largely reduced capital accumulation from the original class of owners, private property in the means of production is to be replaced with a free association based on public or common ownership of socialized assets.[7]" Now you go grab ANY philosophy that advocates altruism, and I'll show you where they explicitly violate the concept of 'private property'. Okay, newb? P.S. Don't tell me I can't use something that was created on my dime. Furthermore, all those things have existed -- and could again exist, without your deity: The Government. "Just as man can’t exist without his body, so no rights can exist without the right to translate one’s rights into reality—to think, to work and to keep the results—which means: the right of property. The modern mystics of muscle who offer you the fraudulent alternative of “human rights” versus “property rights,” as if one could exist without the other, are making a last, grotesque attempt to revive the doctrine of soul versus body. Only a ghost can exist without material property; only a slave can work with no right to the product of his effort. The doctrine that “human rights” are superior to “property rights” simply means that some human beings have the right to make property out of others; since the competent have nothing to gain from the incompetent, it means the right of the incompetent to own their betters and to use them as productive cattle. Whoever regards this as human and right, has no right to the title of “human.” The source of property rights is the law of causality. All property and all forms of wealth are produced by man’s mind and labor. As you cannot have effects without causes, so you cannot have wealth without its source: without intelligence. You cannot force intelligence to work: those who’re able to think, will not work under compulsion; those who will, won’t produce much more than the price of the whip needed to keep them enslaved. You cannot obtain the products of a mind except on the owner’s terms, by trade and by volitional consent. Any other policy of men toward man’s property is the policy of criminals, no matter what their numbers. Criminals are savages who play it short-range and starve when their prey runs out—just as you’re starving today, you who believed that crime could be “practical” if your government decreed that robbery was legal and resistance to robbery illegal."-Ayn Rand P.P.S. Your side is starving, and will only starve more. The game is up.

I have a handicap but my good neighbor Fred ran his snowblower up and down the sidewalk for 6 homes...couldn't ask for a nicer person.

No need to shovel sideways here in north county. Most of these fools prefer to walk down the middle of the street.

Plus I know the importance of private property...I am a democratic socialist..not a communist or fascist...but don't call the police, firefighters or drive on interstates and bridges as those are socialist and critical.

Dahmen Piotraschke

Ic your following the moral code well by dismissing your god and judgeing others..but I'm sureu hate poverty stricken masses as well which was Jesus first doctrine ..great philosophy book tho

There are tons of reasons a landlord might do a lot of stuff. However, I can tell you about an oppressive god you worship (the state) who will violate his property rights, if he doesn't do some of those things. There are no rights without property rights. If you don't understand that, you don't qualify for getting in the conversation. P.S. “Judge, and be prepared to be judged."-Ayn Rand

Oh, no Christian... Yet, you still use their moral code: Altruism. I'm an Objectivist, dummy.

In the litigious society we live in today doesn't mean someone won't try to sue.

So why does my landlord hire men to cut grass and shovel snow shitbag don't judge me .

Johnny Galt

P.S. there is no such thing as "duty". That is an anti-concept.

"Slumlords"... I don't care about the safety of any tenant. Just like I don't expect you to care about my safety. Or, if you're so damned worried about it, why don't you go knocking on apartment doors? Nevermind, I looked at your page. Enjoy the zero your ideology brings.

It's actually not the law. In Kansas City and Columbia you are required by law to clear the sidewalk or you can be held liable for injury that occurs. It's up to the municipality.

Brandon Thurman

Where ever it may be as sectioned...I don't agree with it as it makes our society even colder ( insert two drum beats then cymbal crash) but its one of many of the glorious laws here....

Laura Davis
Laura Davis

Not taking sides, I live in Jefferson County. We don't have many sidewalks. Just an FYI.

Laura Davis
Laura Davis

Actually, that would be tort law so it wouldn't be in the statutes.

Chris Davis
Chris Davis

I've always heard that as well. I'm not going to be shoveling my sidewalk anytime soon. It's the government's property anyhow.

Brandon Thurman
Brandon Thurman

So a law class I took is an urban myth? I don't think that law has changed...if so please advise me of the statute

Where are the kids that shovel for 10 bucks?? Send them my way! I usually try to shovel myself but this storm was crazy especially with the temps. I'm a single lady and had to go into work on Monday. I inquired about hiring someone and they wanted $60. I cleared what I could and the suns doing the rest for free!

the same man who wrote the letter also agrees with ticketing people fortheir cars being stuck in the snow so whatev

Dahmen Piotraschke
Dahmen Piotraschke

I agree yet many apt dwellers are disabled or at risk...plus it's the landlords duty to have it done but the abundance of slumlords don't care about the safety of their tenants.

Brandon Thurman
Brandon Thurman

The thing is if you shovel it and someone gets hurt on it it is no longer considered "an act of God" and you're legally responsible and can lose your home even due to a lawsuit for "paying it forward"

Heather J L Cooper
