Three Pet Owners Cited for Leaving Animals Outside in St. Louis Cold Snap

Francis, the Shepherd mix Stray Rescue took in from the cold last month.
So far, three people have been cited for keeping their pets outside in the subzero freeze gripping St. Louis.

Temperatures are so cold that animals left outdoors could die, so St. Louis Metropolitan Police Chief Sam Dotson assigned extra officers to keep an eye out for neglected or injured pets.

Police say two summons for animal cruelty have been issued to owners whose pets were left outside, and one summons is still pending.

Owners who leave pets outside will receive a summons and have their pets confiscated while temperatures remain at deadly lows.

Luckily, three is a pretty small number. Stray Rescue founder Randy Grimm commented on Facebook Monday he is seeing far fewer pets outside than he feared he would.

Good. The owners should be forced outside.

I heard dogs barking and roaming up and down my street and saw a dog left in a nearby back yard between 5pm and midnight two nights ago. I don't understand how folks can just leave their dogs out.

I hope that emaciated dog in the picture wasn't one left outside. Poor baby deserves a better life.

Are there ppl really arguing and saying dogs are ok to be left out in arctic temps? Wow.

the off-white dog pictured here suffered far more than the cold. I hope he was rescued and removed from that awful human.

People need to be cited during heat waves, too.

Some people should NEVER be around animals. NEVER!

I think the pet owners and the pets should have to trade places for a few nights - see how those human scumbags like it!

I agree with Daniel Walker THERE IS NO EXCUSE FOR NOT GETTING THEM IN THE HOME ! CUT OFF EVERY THING !!#

Maybe we should tie them outside w/no shelter and leave them there till spring thaw!

The City SHOULD print the names & addresses of the assholes cited for this and let "true justice" take its course.

GOOD! I hope the animals have also been confiscated. I'm sure this wasn't their first...or last time doing this.

Whoever treats the pets like that will treat people the same. Hang them from their genitals.

I hope they do more than simply cite the owners...horrible to do this to any living creature. I feel bad even taking my doggies out to do thier business in this freezing weather but it's got to be done but they should not be out there more than 5-10 minutes. I wish people would take care of their pets, they are a gift and bring so much joy to many people.

Hopefully, they're looking out for homeless humans also.

JJ O'Brand and Bob Broyles .... I vote you guys to give out the citation... I'll supply the baseball bats! And Meggan Slaughter..you didn't leave her outside. ..you were out there with her!

They should be more than cited. Maybe someone should leave them outside in this cold for a night. Asses!!!

If they leave them outside for too long yeah something should be done but my dog wanted to be outside yesterday. She's built for it. She ran around for about 2 hours outside while I shoveled the driveway and was completely fine. It really depends on the breed. BUT obviously no dog should be left outside overnight in this weather.

My dog loves being out in this weather. So saying all dog owners should be punished for leaving their dog outside is silly. If you own a breed that is built for cold then let them have fun and play in the snow

Send those people to visit me. I have zero tolerance for them. And I'll let JJ help.

If the owner is an asshole enough to leave the dog out in the subzero temperature and get a ticket, I wonder what that same asshole does to the dog behind closed doors? REMOVE THOSE DOGS FROM SAID ASSHOLES! A shelter is better than that and maybe the dogs will get adopted by a good person/family. Also, citation is a BS form of punishment for this evil.

A citation? REALLY? Oh, that will do alot of good, said no animal ever....SMDH

Change cited to indicted... People likening the homeless to pets are beyond cruel, don't know the word empathy, and are twats.

they should spend a night outside......and it's warmer today then yesterday.....

This is truly sad!! Wtf is wrong with people!! If you can't stand outside for more then a couple minutes without a jacket what makes you think your dog will be okay??

Danny Boy Kalzoni

Who does that. My dogs go out for five minutes and they are limping like their paws hurt.

They need real punishment... anyone who can do that is obviously not right in the head.

The people who leave their pets outside for any length of time should have their pets confiscated and they should never own a pet again, ever.

LEAVING animals outside, not taking them outside... :|

Yeah don't forget about the homeless too...but then again the city can't fine itself can they?
