Catch You On the Thrift Side: Shrewsbury Value Village Closes, Makes Room for Walmart

The Value Village signs have already been stripped from the roof.
Value Village says it's still looking for a new location to replace the Shrewsbury store, which closed Monday to make room for the new Walmart planned for Kenrick Plaza.

"Today our hearts are breaking with you," the family-owned thrift chain posted on Facebook. "We hope to find a way back into the area...Stay tuned for any new developments."

The thrift store had hoped to move into a storefront in nearby Affton that had been vacant for a year, but county councilman Steve Stenger spoke out against it, saying Value Village was a bad fit for an up-and-coming neighborhood.

The store was almost completely clear of merchandise by its closing.
"Affton is poised to join other inner-ring suburbs like Brentwood, Maplewood and Richmond heights that are taking advantage of their convenient locations and quality school districts to draw new residents and vibrant businesses," Stenger told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch last year. "I grew up in Affton, and I want what's best for it and I don't believe Value Village is a good fit for the area."

Value Village president Robert West finally decided not to push for the Affton storefront, but a year later, there's still no replacement for the south-county store.

Stores in Fenton, Normandy and O'Fallon are still open.

The new Walmart -- the result of two-and-a-half years of political battles in Shrewsbury -- also displaces the Kenrick Antique Mall, which is moving to 8400 Watson Road two miles away and will take the new name General Grant Antique & Decor Mall.

Value Village says it's continuing to look for a new location. President Robert West did not immediately return calls from Daily RFT.

I have been to WalMart exactly two times in the last 10 years. Once to buy a car battery and the other time to have it replaced because it went bad before the warranty expired. I don't care if it goes bad again - I will never go back. Why the heck do we need another one, anyway? Isn't the one in Kirkwood close enough?

Oh Steve, I like you but don't be a snob. Are empty businesses along Gravois really a better plan? Vv was my main shopping place in college at nearby Webster U.

Here is the link to Steve Stenger's office info. This is the prick that saw fit to develop low income project developments in Oakville, but refuses to allow a thrift store in VACANT store fronts in Affton because its too close to his home in the unincorporated Crestwood area. A thrift store is too much of a blight in an area where vacant businesses, check cashing establishments, and chain stores cover the landscape? Pull the flush lever and vote this turd out. This is by NO MEANS an endorsement for Dooley. Damn government sucks. http://www.stlouisco.com/YourGovernment/CountyCouncil/CouncilDistrict6

The irony is the Walmart employees will need a thrift shop.

Also... Councilman Stengar thinks Affton is too nice for a Value Village? This makes me think he must have had something to do with the Affton Red Racks being closed as well. YET.... he allowed St. Vincent de Paul to open a new store right in the heart of South County (Lemay Ferry/Lindbergh)???? Is he trying to tell me MY neighborhood is going downhill, so he'll allow thrift shops there, but not in his precious home neighborhood of Affton?!? >:(

Anyone know if that out-building where The Stork Lady's Kids' Consignment Sale! sale is held will be spared or are they left looking for a space to rent, too?

Value Village will be missed!! That location got a lot of great stuff. I certainly won't be driving across town (I'm in Oakville) to go to that Walmart like I did just to go to Value Village.

Have you driven thru Afton on Gravois ? Businesses have closed in droves. I think the last time I counted, there were about 14 empty businesses down Gravois. Way to go Afton, stay classy !
