Will Stan Kroenke move the Rams to L.A. and start another soccer team?
Whispers in the British media say St. Louis Rams owner Stan Kroenke wants to turn his newly-purchased land in Los Angeles into a stadium for both kinds of football.

The billionaire sports mogul wants to move the Rams back to California and start a Major League Soccer team called the Los Angeles Gunners, according to an anonymous tipster quoted in The Sun. That 60 acre plot of land Kroenke recently purchased would be the site of a 75,000-seat stadium.

Stan Kroenke.
Living up to the nickname Silent Stan, Kroenke hasn't said a word since declaring to the NFL that he bought land suited for a stadium. The purchase set off a frenzy in St. Louis, the city Kroenke could leave if he doesn't get the millions of dollars he wants to build a new stadium.

It's not too hard to believe Kroenke is eyeing a new soccer team. He owns Arsenal Football Club, an English Premier League team, and the Colorado Rapids in the MLS.

The L.A. Gunners would be a sister-team of sorts to Arsenal. But Los Angeles already has a culture-crossover soccer team, and it's not going well.

Chivas USA, the American sister club to Mexico's popular Chivas de Guadalajara, struggles to attract fans to games or land a television deal. The team's crowning achievement was reaching the conference semifinals in 2007. When David Beckham played for Los Angeles' other MLS team, the Galaxy, his $4 million salary was larger than the payroll for all Chivas' players combined.

The stadium wouldn't be the first football-soccer combo. The Seattle Seahawks and the Seattle Sounders share Centurylink Field. Atlanta is redesigning their football stadium to include soccer, and they don't even have an MLS team yet. On the flip side, Tottenham Hotspur Football Club in England wants to build a stadium to attract an NFL team.

The Sun's report says plans for a football/football stadium in L.A. are in their infancy, but the tipster said the name L.A. Gunners was a "tip of the hat" to Arsenal's nickname. (British media are more liberal with using unnamed sources than the typical American news outlet.)

Considering that he owns the Arsenal, I would say The Sun could have better info than people realize.

Good let them leave. No more tax money to pay for a goddamn building and a sports team.

The Sun said so huh? Well I must say that they are a respectable publication when it comes to looking at topless women.

In typical Kroenke/wallmart style, pull up stakes and move to the next town once the TIF runs out...

The Rams are not leaving St. Louis. Kroenke is using this as leverage. He's a smart businessman. I don't understand why people think Kroenke should talk to the fans. He's in the process of getting a deal done, and doesn't want it played out through the media. He was responsible for bringing football back to St. Louis, and will get a new stadium for the St. Louis area.

Good, LA can have them. Let them go lose somewhere else.

Total BS rumor. You need to understand English Journos. They will make anything up to sell a story.

According to Bernie M., in 2014 look for Kroenke to make a significant land purchase around St. Louis for a stadium for the Rams.

Absolutely no respect shown from Kroenke to the fans that support his team.

Haha...He might get a team but he will be forced to sell the Rams and will have to bid on one of the 2 expansion teams that they're talking about!!

besides, saying im only a st. louis fan, i see where you get that. But if the cardinals moved i would always root for the cardinals, just as i always will for the Rams. I just dont see why california deserves 18 plus professional sports teams when all st. louis is asking for is to be a three sport city. Yea i was born in 91 so i didnt start watching the Rams until they were already here. That is true, but what made me fall in love with the Rams and become a fan forever until the day i die is when my dad showed me superbowl 14 when the great Jack Youngblood broke his leg and had the heart to continue playing through a blowout. It was the most inspirational thing i have ever seen, and obviously that happened in LA. Sorry i flew off the handle with my first comment but its our only football team and i love them so much. Honestly if your a Rams fan and you feel jsut as strongly about them coming to california, you should be able to see my frustration. But honestly you all dont deserve the greatest show on turf, which is what true Rams fans still call them no matter what season they have. They have the support here and for people to say otherwise thats just ridiculous. But i do think if you deserve any team to come to la, that team is the Jaguars.

No David McGetrick, I'm such I rams fan I am that Pissed off that they are leaving my home where I can walk to see where they play. I will always root for the rams first, but I fucking hate California and really don't want to see then go back. That's all

@ David you have the right to state your opinion but at the same time you can't speak for St . Louis ram's fans everywhere I've been a fan even when they were in L.A. but is it a Crime for Us to want them to Stay put?

F him! He could of done that here years ago! If he doesn't think St. Louis is a strong enough market, he'll be I. A rude awaking in LA. No way they could handle 3 MLS teams.

David McGetrick
David McGetrick

Why would you want a team that doesn't want you? Let it go and move on. Make yourselves attractive to another team, or, better yet, get an original franchise which you can legitimately call your own. As a Rams fan, I want what's best for the Rams. What's best for St. Louis is a St. Louis concern, not a Rams or NFL concern. Last time I cared about where my team played I was 10 years old and the Dodgers abandoned Brooklyn for LA. Turned out well for them and I'm still a fan. It's about what is best for the team and league, not the city.

David McGetrick
David McGetrick

Wherever they play Jeff. Rams fan. Super Bowl is another issue. Won't happen until they get a QB and they do not currently have one of those.

David McGetrick
David McGetrick

You have the best run franchise in MLB. Satisfy yourselves with that. You just don't do football well. Or basketball either (St. Louis Hawks).

David McGetrick
David McGetrick

These people aren't Rams fans Dan. They are St. Louis fans who used to root for the Cardinals and will root for whoever moves here next. You, I, and some others are the Rams fans. Wherever they play...Go Rams.

David McGetrick
David McGetrick

Lighten up Jim. It's only a football team. Just a millionaires game, played by millionaires, for the benefit of still more millionaires. Nobody is holding you hostage, and if football has become life or death for you, consider yourself a lucky man to be spared the real problems of life.

David McGetrick
David McGetrick

Don't matter where they play. A Rams fan is a Rams fan.

David McGetrick
David McGetrick

I'm with you. Most of these folks are St. Louis fans, not Rams fans. A few years ago they were Cardinals fans. They'll bandwagon whoever comes in next. Maybe I'd feel different if they moved to Mellenville, NY, but I don't have to concern myself over that eventuality.

David McGetrick
David McGetrick

Rams fan, not a St. Louis fan. Just as long as I know where they are. It's about what's best for the Rams. Period.

David McGetrick

The Rams originated in Cleveland, not LA. Right idea, wrong facts.

Bring them back to LA where they belong!!! You ppl from St. Louis don't even go out & support them & don't even wanna agree on giving them the money the Rams are asking for to rebuild their stadium that's some BS. Now if you bring them to Cali whooo ppl are gonna go crazy marketing wise you will make money!!! & money talks in any sports business & over here in LA you will get the stadium you guys want

Mark Morris

BS rumors!! The Rams will stay in St. Louis.... Why don't you guys ask Eric Dickerson what he thought about LA even having a football team.. Lol

I don't want to be rude, but your last sentence basically discredits your entire post. I am sick of people who know nothing about the Jaguars and their fans say this same thing over and over again. I was born in St. Louis and was alive long enough to remember when we had the Cardinals football team. I also remember crying when I found out that Bidwill stole the team in the middle of the night (just like Baltimore). Jacksonville has had 4 HORRIBLE seasons and yet, their fans still support them. Why should ANY fan base have to suffer through that when they've stuck with the team through its worse period in franchise history? I may not be from Jacksonville, but I've lived there long enough to understand why they are angry with the media and the dumb sheep that pile on that fan base just because "it's the cool thing to do". The only difference between St. Louis and Jax is that the current Jags owner is spending money on the stadium and the city, effectively saying they aren't moving, period. The Rams owner seems to be doing the opposite....and that scares me. Seeing one team leave was bad enough. I'm not sure I can take it a second time.

fartinton

Rooting for the team in the area you're from and supporting a team whose revenues contribute to your state's coffers is bandwagoning? I'm pretty sure that's how sports works, period. Imagine how absurd the opposite is taken to its logical conclusion. Everybody just flipping through the channels and arbitrarily picking teams to root for.

That actually seems sort of bizarre to continue following a team decades after they move out of an area you used to live in. That's like calling an ex from the early 90s just to make sure she's "doin' ok".
