Sen. Brian Nieves.
Sorry, Daily RFT readers. Our stories about the Missouri Legislature are about to get much less interesting.

Well, that's only if Missouri state senator Brian Nieves really is leaving the legislature.

Nieves took to Facebook this weekend to write an ambiguous 1,607-word post saying he may or may not run for reelection in the 26th district.

"I can't see myself ever terminating my service and dedication to our Constitutions, but it may be time for me to do it in a different way," Nieves, a Navy veteran, writes. "Perhaps in the private sector through my leadership development business and/or in some local public office, but one thing is sure: I will remain 'in service!' Just closer to home."

Nieves is the instigator behind several of our favorite Riverfront Times legislature stories, like the time he said Governor Jay Nixon was bitch-slapping the Constitution. Or the time he gave away assault rifles to those who supported his gun bill. Or that time he e-mailed a constituent at 1 a.m. to insult his beard.

Or that time he freaked out at reporters:

Nieves says he's been thinking privately about leaving his post to stay closer to his wife and children. He's even chosen his own heir: Republican House Speaker Tim Jones.

But democracies aren't monarchies. There are no official heirs. Representative Dave Schatz stepped up and filed to run for Nieves' seat without his blessing, causing Nieves to scramble to a crossroads and decide whether to run against Schatz himself or throw his support behind Jones.

"I now have to watch my wife and kids get the kind of controversial, unwanted attention they did not sign up for and would have easily been avoided if everyone in politics simply would have offered my family the kind of respect shown by my friend Tim Jones," Nieves says.

"[Jones'] understanding and willingness to support my decision and patiently await that decision is appreciated."

Nieves says he will make his final decision by March 21, before the Franklin County Lincoln Day dinner. But the end of his Facebook declaration doesn't bode well for his campaign:

"I'm less than a week from announcing my FINAL decision and when I do.... Well, I just hope you'll allow Tim Jones to become your next senator!"

Show him respect?? Why? The son of a bitch sure as hell doesn't show anyone who thinks differently than himself and his fellow christofascists any respect. You brought all of the scorn directly upon yourself with your own words and actions you miserable hillbilly. Go to hell.
