Update 10:40 a.m. - This story has been updated with more details about the victim from police.

A gunman unloading round after round through the window of a south St. Louis family's home Wednesday night, striking Antonio Johnson, an eleven-year-old boy, in the head and killing him.

St. Louis Metropolitan Police Chief Sam Dotson says the eleven-year-old was likely not the intended victim in this brazen gun attack.

"We do not believe [Antonio Johnson] was a target in this," Dotson tells KMOV. "One of the teenage boys in the house had been previously shot, and we do believe he has some information that can be helpful in this investigation."

Police originally identified Antonio as a seven-year-old based on information from the family, but a report released Thursday morning says the child is actually eleven-years-old.

Antonio was working on a computer in the 3600 block of Tholozan Avenue, just south of where Gravois Avenue meets Grand Boulevard, in a home with a four-year-old, two teens (including the one who was previously shot) and three adults, according to KSDK NewsChannel 5.

The gunman, who is still on the run from police, stood on a ledge on the home, broke a window around 9 p.m. Wednesday night and started shooting, firing between eight and ten rounds, according to KMOV.

The needless, violent death of a bystanding child unleashed an outpouring of concern and sadness in the Tower Grove neighborhood and around St. Louis.

There have been 29 other homicides in St. Louis since January 1, 2014, according to police records, which were updated Monday.

This is a very sad story indeed. Hopefully this kids death won't be another #. But any how as a true South Sider. Born & Raised 6721 Virginia St no need for a real row call. Violence in St.Louis will always happen. Gun or No GUNS and fessing up to who did what. Won't ever happen the blues in boy just treat ya like a dummy anyhow. Street justice will be served cold. That's just the way of the life on the South or North side. Y'all yuppies won't ever change that. Violence isn't the answer but magnifying this story means nothing. So my rant your rant this post all BS. Fact is DRUGS & PUSSY fuel the economy on the South Side. Thus the drama gun play dope heads. That slay one another for next to nothing. Will next stop so if ya really care start packing heat. Also who's got the balls to walk down Chippewa. From Jefferson to Grand after dark. Definitely a few who have lived in the South Side. So just be glad you ain't living in hells door right !

I love that you republican folks chalk this up to guns and gun control. No amount of guns, legal or otherwise, would have prevented this crime. You talk of low crime in Texas...then move to fucking Texas. What this situation needs is compassion, understanding, and sympathy. Not your damn soapbox. My heart goes out to the family. I wish them healing positive energy in this difficult time.

What a loss. I hope the murderer feels this on his head for the rest of his life.

I'm not running for office. This has nothing to do with politics. It has to do with prevention. A child was killed senselessly. It goes without saying that this is just terrible. Sending prayers is about the most unproductive and inactive thing you can do. It's a slap in the face to people who want to see change instead of just throwing their hands up in defeat. When a child dies of cancer possibly caused by pollutants in the environment they live in should we just pray for him and say "it's just a horrible tragedy" and respectively throw our hands up and ignore any thoughts we have so we don't offend anyone? No. You ask questions. You debate for answers that are a positive towards prevention. You maintain and practice maturity and reason. You work for a stronger conscience for human life.

11 year olds don't have lifestyle choices. Just another victim to others choice of lifestyle. And how did the family get the age wrong? Who are they asking? Poor baby. May his soul rest peacefully.

Not the time for political speech or hateful back and forths. Only say you feel for this family.

Stop lumping all gun owners together. You wouldnt dare say that all African-Americans are criminals just because the majority of criminals prosecuted in this city are African Americans would you? You cannot judge and punish all people for what a select few do. If you don't like guns, don't own one. And while I won't go as far as saying "David your an idiot"I would say that it's wrong you view owning a gun as a right to retaliate. You shouldn't own a gun. A legally armed community represents a presence and,to an extent,a unified resistance. This isn't the movies. You don't go shooting up the town in retaliation. Prevention is the key,and its statistically proven. A problem becomes a problem when it's to late to fix it.

3.26.2014  approx 1:30 pm in TGE.  Two blocks away from my home, 9 gunshots fired and one man dead @  Juniata and Compton.   Best quote I heard all day, pulled up to be nosy neighbor and woman being interviewed looks to me and says, "That's why they ass NEED to be in SCHOOL", while pointing directly to Roosevelt High.

People are really jumping on this to pander to gun control, or anti gun control, this soon? If I had an 11 year old dead in a breakin, I'd probably go ballistic watching people argue over that and using my son's death as a way to bolster their platform.

Exactly, Bridget Scott. Unfortunately, some people will not talk in fear of retaliation.

Where are the neighbors. it was not one eyewitness to the horrific homicide. somebody had to see something.

Arm the homeowners is your solution? Dumb. Let's arm all children. That would've saved this boy's life.

No there are far too many criminals in this city that are running free....there is a difference between law abiding citizens who carry and criminals who carry. Sheeesh.

Schools that have cop's or some kinda enforcement WITH A FIRE ARMED PERSON .... No shootings ! People that don't want guns ...fine . Ok I get it . But if your wife or kid's or yourself are being killed by some druged out freak ?? I'll just call the cop's an pray for you until they get there ! You break in my house ? You better be right with god ! Because you just won a first class ticket to what ever higher power you pray to . Don't pass go ! No jail ! Dahmen Piotraschke . They band all meath an cocaine . The criminals still don't seem to understand that either ! An all the while the police ramp up there tactical weapons an skil . I for don't trust them at all ! Let's just say it takes you 5 minutes to get to a house to save a family ? How many shots could happen in 5 minutes ?

David J. McCutcheon

Because someone shooting into a house and running away within seconds would give you ample time to retaliate, right?

Rachel Davidson

Why is it so hard for you all to understand that despite any new laws and restrictions placed on guns it would not have prevented this? The piece of shit that did this obviously does not follow the law.

And Oblowme and our government wants to disarm Law Abiding Citizens. This is why that is a bad thing. Arm yourselves people!. Protect your family! Only criminals will have the upper hand if such a thing were to happen. My thoughts and prayers are with this family.

Truth is, the shootings were related.   Cops tell me it was some young Gang Bangers who think they are Crips and Bloods.  Turns out, the same kids who shot this young 19 year man, are the same ones who shot the 7 year old kid.   Cop told me it was a Black Impala with out of state license plates.

An armed resident of this house could have done nothing to prevent this horrific event....unless you sit with your shotgun constantly pointed out the window. Gun legislation may have prevented this criminal from obtaining the gun used...maybe not, but maybe.

I love how the overly pro-gun crowd thinks they're all some hybrid of Clint Eastwood and Rambo and would appropriately react to any violent situation. You are not and would not.  Would you be keeping a loaded gun easily accessible in your home with young children?  Just so you could try to use it in case something like this happens to you.  If so, you are irresponsible and endangering your children.  If you keep your guns locked and unloaded, how do you expect to defend yourself from an attack that starts unexpectedly, and ends in a minute or two?  You can't.
