A woman is trying to make a recovery after being stabbed several times in a brutal attack that saw three others murdered. Jessica Powell suffered serious injuries and her medical expenses are going to be astronomical, so her friends and family are holding a fundraiser to help out.

On Valentine's Day last month, Shawn Kavanagh, 23, went to see his estranged wife, Jessica (then Kavanaugh), 27, who had been living with Lexy Vandiver, 29, and her two kids. The two women worked together at a nearby nursing home. Visiting at the home was Tara Lynn Fifer, 22, who was also a co-worker.

When the three women told Shawn Kavanagh to leave, police say he went to his car and returned with a knife. He attacked each of the women, stabbing them multiple times. Vandiver and Fifer both died on the scene. Vandiver's son, seven-year-old Mason Vandiver, was also stabbed in what police believe was an attempt to protect his mother; he died approximately three days later.

Powell suffered four stab wounds, including one in the heart, the Post-Dispatch reported. After being airlifted to a hospital and having extensive surgery done, she survived. But she doesn't have medical insurance.

Friends are selling T-shirts to raise money after the brutal attack.
"We want to help her before the bills start piling up so she has one less thing to worry about," Donna Craig, a close friend of Powell's who is leading the effort, tells Daily RFT.

Using Facebook, Craig has been coordinating benefits in the towns of Hermann and Warrenton.

For more information on these events, people can visit a Facebook page recently set-up by Craig.

Others have stepped up as well, including a Hermann-based dog-groomer service aptly named "the Laundromutt" that is offering a pick-up and drop-off pet-bath deal for $10, with all proceeds going to Powell.

These towns might be a little far for many Daily RFT readers who want to help out, but a PayPal account has been set up, and donations can be sent to jesciesnewlife@gmail.com ("Jescie" is Jessica's nickname).

A LOT cheaper than paying the average $200/mnth for low income families, which would be impossible for them to pay. Most have no choice but to pay the fine. The percentage of ppl who take the fine will be shockingly high, I predict. However, if Obama is still in office, they will cover it up and make it look like it is a good thing… just like they have been doing and will continue to do. Obviously, otherwise people wouldn't be making ignorant comments like this.

I meant educated on this particular subject (not trying to offend). You have gotten wrong information because there is no "lower income rate". Yes, the rate plans/options are based on income, but what I am saying is even (or should I say especially) low income families are the ones who cannot afford it. For someone barely making it already, a few hundred extra dollars a month is impossible to afford. It has also not lowered the price of healthcare as a whole. As I stated before, it has actually made rates higher for existing plans, in most cases. These are facts. I cannot blame you for being ignorant on the subject, though. Obama lied about this whole thing and is still lying. I am not trying to offend anyone, just to be clear. It just blows my mind that some people still believe that this is a good thing. The statistics will prove the fault in all this, with due time. I guarantee the number of people who took the fine instead of paying will be a very VERY high amount… higher than the amount of people who were previously not covered and obtained coverage from the marketplace. I am not trolling or an Obama hater (well kinda now), but I voted for him. Specifically because of Obamacare, actually. I was ecstatic to be able to get insurance with a pre-existing condition. The rates were supposed to be reasonable, though… and my friends with insurance weren't supposed to be dropped nor have their rates raised. Not to mention, A LOT of companies have made their employees part time instead of ft, solely so they aren't forced to offer insurance options.

Hi Steve Mincer aka fat mouth....jescie left her husband in january after he assulted her she had a restraining order on him & he was due in count for it on febuary 22nd.jescie was living with her friend, one of the women who lost her life when SHAWN came there & did what he did.so naw she didnt STAY with him ur idiots, she left him & THIS is what happened.if ud educate urself on domestic violence as well as u have on Obamacare (shit) ud know that the most DANGEROUS time in a relationship is when u are leaving the person.filing for divorce is the #1 killer in a domestic abuse relationship! While ur attacking MY frirnd for no insurance have it in ur heart to see what she went through. ..not onky did she almost die but she lost two friends & lived through it.have a little fucking compassion.if u dont wanna fucking help dont comment.we live in such a sad gross negative world.if u dont wanna help or donate dont,ur little opinions dont do shit so waste ur fingers writing dumb shit & looking like assholes.God bless all the haters

and how long did you stay with him after he showed "that side of himself"?

Natalie Stephens

I dated a guy that I knew from CHILDHOOD and our families were close. He and I were together a while before he showed that side of himself. So yeah he MIGHT have been an asshat from the beginning and then again maybe NOT. It's a tragic situation all around really with 3 people losing their lives and one fighting to regain hers. Just remember that part and try not to be such an asshat yourself.

How about I'm educated with a bs degree and a full time job with coverage. There are so many people not getting denied coverage now because of a preexisting condition. If you can't afford it you usually can get covered under a lower income rate. It's also lowered the prices of health care.

Steve Mincer

do you think he just woke up one day and did this or do you think he was an asshat from the day she met him?

Katie Stanfield

Well, bright guy, he will obviously be in prison for the rest of his life. I am sure the less than a dollar a day they make will help a bunch towards the probably hundreds of thousands of dollars in medical bills and other expenses. Great suggestion.

Just shows you need to educate yourself. Not one person I know is benefitting. The rates are too high for already low income families. Most would have to pay almost half of their salary to cover their families– impossible for most, even on an average salary. People obtaining insurance in the marketplace are people who were dropped from their policies, due to Obamacare. Most everyone else is taking the penalty fine, because they have no other choice. Personally, I was for Obamacare, because I have a pre-existing condition and wasn't able to obtain insurance. BUT, the rates are too high for me to afford, so what good does it do? Plus, when I do graduate and get a job that offers insurance, the rate will most likely be higher than it was before Obamacare, so there's a double whammy already. Oh, and I will have to pay the fine, too. Sooo, definitely not helping people like me, which is who it was intended to help. That aside, you, sir, are a heartless person for making ignorant comments like this. Especially on a story about such a sad, horrific event.

I am amazed at the comments left here. WE are all adults here. Maybe she chose not to have ObamaCare and be on government assistance. You don't know her story but the first to judge!!! How would you feel if it was your daughter?!?!?!? Or better yet your daughters friend that got killed for trying to help?!?! I am appalled to think what you would do if in a similar situation. I just hope, yes I HOPE/WISH/PRAY, that someone just simply turns their head WHEN something bad happens to you!!!

And how did it start by saying mean shit about her!!! I don't understand, do people wake up hating life?

Obamacare is not "affordable". It's a joke. Most people I know w/o ins are taking the fine, simply bc they cannot afford the insurance. For all you know, she's one of the MANY people who's insurance rates raised bc of Obamacare and they had to drop it. Even if she did have insurance, I doubt it would cover all of the medical debt. That being said, why is that even an issue?! Shoot, why is it even mentioned, actually? With or without insurance, she would need help right now. Shocking how heartless people can be.

She should have bought health insurance

@dalediversity  This woman was brutally attacked, three people died, and your only response is to criticize her lack of insurance? Maybe you should have bought a sense of compassion since you're apparently lacking one.

poohsplus3

@dalediversity If she just left her husband, he may have been the one to carry the health insurance. You do not know the circumstances. Being a single Mom, it is very expensive, plus to afford health insurance as well as living expenses. We do not know if he was paying child support, how much she made, was she offered insurance through her work, what the co-pay for the insurance was if it was offered, etc. You are very cold and callous.

Also, you must not have ever had experience with someone associated with Domestic Violence. I don't know whether to be happy for you or saddened that you did not educate yourself on the subject first.

I wish you well in the future.

Not worth replying to but the fact is her husband did not work...she had just lost her health insurance in october and worked her entire adult life to support herself...the story is about awareness and caring for others...thank you from her family for all of your prayers
