Boys, Young Men Report Being "Coerced" Into Sex By Female Aggressors: MU Study

Twenty-six percent of boys and young men say they were forced into unwanted sex by seduction.
A new study from researchers at the University of Missouri is making waves after finding that nearly half of teenage boys and college men have been forced into sex, usually by a female acquaintance.

Of the 284 boys and men between 14 and 26 surveyed by Bryana French and her team of Mizzou researchers, 43 percent said they'd had an unwanted sexual experience, and 95 percent said a girl or woman initiated that sexual experience, according to the data published in Psychology of Men and Masculinity.

"There is this assumption that men can't be assaulted, and that if they are assaulted, it's not that problematic," French tells Daily RFT. But French's study shows that while the psychological impacts of forced sex are different for boys and girls, men don't emerge unscathed from an unwanted sexual experience.

Boys who experienced unwanted sex were more likely to engage in risky sexual behaviors and increased drinking, according to the study. Students who were drugged or drunk when sexually coerced showed significant distress.

"It's still having a negative effect on their psychological wellness," French says.

There is one major difference, however, in how boys and girls react to forced sex, French says. Sexual assault has a significant impact on girls' self-esteem, but French's findings showed a neutral effect on self-esteem for boys, meaning their sense of identity wasn't affected by their unwanted sexual experience.

"It may be the case that sexual coercion by women doesn't affect males' self-perceptions in the same way that it does when women are coerced," French says. "Instead, it may inadvertently be consistent with expectations of masculinity and sexual desire, though more research is needed to better understand this relationship."

In other words, in a world where men are expected to "sow their seeds" and bed lots of ladies, having sex -- even if it's unwanted -- may be consistent with boys' views of themselves. Scientists say that's not the case for girls, who are often socially instructed to feel shame or guilt after sex, wanted or not.

I love that part, because it literally says, "Rape isn't as bad for men and boys because men and boys expect to be raped." Beautiful.

Never ok to take advantage of someone regardless of gender. Period.

I am glad to see the results of this study. It's high time females were exposed as cock hungry agressive sluts. Time and time again I have heard male friends say they were groped by their female friends, some on the very first date. Many said that as soon as girls get into the car, they immediately grabbed their dicks and want to perform oral sex before the car has driven a block. Men and boys have always been deemed as the agressors in sex, but it is now apparent women are more agressive and should now wear the title of Cock Coercers. All one has to do is watch things like Girls Gone Wild or the numerous films of spring break to see them at their slutty best.

It's the old double standard of the woman being a whore and the man being a stud. And if he doesn't want it, there must be something wrong with him, because, you know, all men want to bang every female they see.....

No sympathy for the men in this story? That us part of the problem of how we view men...cause unwanted sexual experiences are something to joke about...if the table was turn these comments would be different and that is cause to look at your own perceptions.

@RAMESSES First of all, not all women were doing this. Second of all, not all females are "cock hungry aggressive sluts". And just because there are women who are aggressive, it doesn't counter the fact that men can be aggressive as well. Girls Gone Wild is not an overview of how "slutty" every single woman is, only the girls in the video. Don't generalize, just because men have been raped, because people ignore the fact that women get raped every day. Tell me why is it that no one ever said much about how aggressive men are? It says in the article women feel shame after sex, wanted or not. How do you know that the rape statistics for women are even as high as they should be due to women keeping their mouths shut? I didn't know what rape was until I was raped.
