Matt Adams goes for a foul ball, but a Reds fan gets there first.
Cincinnati Reds fan Chris Smith came to Thursday's game against the St. Louis Cardinals with his glove in hand, ready to catch a foul ball from his seats on the first base line.

But he caught a lot more than that after a video of Smith snatching a pop-up ball just over the glove of Cardinals first-baseman Matt Adams went viral Thursday night.

Adams falls into the stands glove-first to catch Chris Heisley's foul ball. Once he lands, he sees that Smith caught the ball, gives him a little shove with his glove and picks himself off the tarp, turning away in time to miss Smith taunt him with the ball and throw up a one-fingered salute.

"He gave me a shove and I fell back," Smith told the Cincinnati Enquirer after the game. Smith had crutches and a knee-brace at the game. "I'm pretty sensitive about my knee right now. I'm fresh out of surgery. It's nothing to joke about."

Adams says he would have caught the ball if Smith hadn't reached above him.

"I was in line for it when I hit the tarp," Adams tells the Enquirer. "I heard [the ball] hit his glove and figured he caught it because I didn't feel it come into mine. I was just trying to stop from falling in there."

Video clearly shows Adams giving Smith a hard tap on the chest with his glove, but Adams says it's not like he was trying to hurt the guy.

"I'm not that type of guy to go after anybody," Adams tells the Enquirer. "I was just trying to stop from going into the stands and stop from falling in there."

Reds fans galvanized over Smith's middle finger to Adams, but Adams says he doesn't mind.

"I heard the whole section was flipping me off," Adams tells the Enquirer. "But I can't let that bother me."

The Cardinals eventually beat the Reds, 7 to 6.

Who does care?...and he obviously DID mean to push him, again, I dont care.

I'm still amazed that a full grown man would bring his baseball glove to a game! I guess that and his finger gestures goes to his mentality...

I would have punched that kid in the face and gave him the finger. Brandon Phillips is such a great role model for the little shit Reds fans, obviously.

When you put yourself in play for the ball - regardless whether you should have or not - you face the consequences. I heard the fan stated that he "almost hit his knee". Get over it and move on.

And the guy totally interfered with the catch. You cant just reach out to catch a ball in play..... Bad sportsmanship. I woulda pushed his ass too. We ♥ Big City!!!

And I should have stated in my earlier post the the Reds fan giving Adams the finger wasn't sportsman like either.

Does it matter who my team is? I'm not a Reds fan and I'm not bitter about anything. I'm just pointing out bad behavior where it shows.... and by all the fans supporting bad behavior, it once again just proves my point I stated earlier.

Yeah, I thought the Cards were supposed to have class.

That guy should have been thrown out of the game for interfering with the game. Go Cards.

Now thinking back ? Didn't something like this happen in a play off game or world series ? When the fan reached over the fence . An the team was still called out because of the fans interfering with game play ? P.s. ..... stay outta the game nancy boy if you don't want to maybe get touched ! Big Freakin Sissy ! Do you think this will be some kinda law suite now also ?

Rhonda get a life. I can see the ball park almost had people there. Cardinal fans would of gotten out of the way. You have a short memory how about your pitcher kicking our back up catcher in the his face with his spikes. That catcher could never play pro baseball again from his injury. ENOUGH SAID.

I'm not a cardinal fan, but I respect Cardinal baseball. Adams shouldn't push any fan..

Fn troll. You are reading comments on FB and making judgement on all Cardinal fans? Its obvious Cardinal fans know better but since its a Dbag from Cincinnati who clearly showed his level of class after the "shove" (gtfoh) it really doesnt matter if he checked him, tapped him, or broke his nose.

Really don't care as long as he doesn't get in trouble. The Reds fan should have stayed out of the play.

its a shove, move on. Stop crying and get back to baseball.

It's amazing how "Cardinal Nation" fans will defend bad behavior on their team. He had two hands to stop his fall....this was an obvious shove or "tap" to the fan. You can see the pissed look on Adams face as he walks away. But whatever....I don't expect much better behavior from the Cardinals nor their fans.

I like how the guy whined about being on crutches and in a cast- while going for a foul ball.

He clearly pushed him... no harm no foul... If he keeps hitting he can push all he wants...

First two rows are in play. You should have enough sense not to interfere with a ball in play. The fan deserves a kick in the nuts.

Bob Dre

He tapped him with a glove, Matt Adams is a big guy that dude would know If he pushed him.

Sandy Norris-Foppe

If you've ever played ball and are concentrating on catching a fly ball.... you depend on your free hand for balance... if a walk gets in the way, you would push it with your hand....if it's a person, then they get pushed.... it happens

Sean Connaughton

Lol im a cards fan but thats not interference....if its in the seats the fan has every right to catch it. Still a douche though

Assault?? The cops would of LOL at you... Adams had every right to go after the ball as did the fan..

All the Cinci fans commenting in this StL thread just prove that there is nothing better in Ohio than Reds baseball...which is a shame considering they take all StL backwash!

I'm sure if this happened in St. Louis the whiny birds and their fans would be throwing a fit. Chris Carpenter wouldn't know how to explain it to his son. Tony Larusa would comment on how the reds needed to scuff up the baseballs more so fans couldn't catch them and the lights from the scoreboard were in Adams eyes is why he missed the catch. Thankfully though Yadier Molina will still have a job after retiring as the only male that could star in a feminine hygiene commercial and not look out of place.

Brenda McBride Watson

You don't ever get to push someone, I don't care who you are. That ball was in the stands and the fan had every right to try and catch it. If he pushed me I would have asked the cops to be called, as they would have been if a fan pushed a player

Kevin Shea
Kevin Shea

Adams should've clocked him. I surprised they didn't eject the fan. He grabbed a ball that was in play.

It looked like the fan touched Matt Adams' face to me. 'If' he did, he deserved that "love tap"!

John Kooken

Guys, guys guys...this is the Cardinals we are talking about here. They 're above the law in the eyes of their fans. They do no wrong, the fans are always respectful to other teams and all calls should fall in their favor or they have been cheated...let's all stand together and give them all the bird!

Justin Barr
Justin Barr

If he was fresh out of surgery shouldn't he have been sitting in the handicapped seating? He made it down several stairs to get to his seat, which he jumped out of to catch the ball. Then freaks out when Adams gives him an "atta boy" tap for catching the ball. If Adams was so upset about fan interference he would have turned to the Ump to try and get a call.

Kirk Russell

What the hell is that tarp doing there ???

Russell Thomeczek

Crappy Reds fan got in the way of a play.....ON PURPOSE, then taunted Adams. That jack ass should have been removed from the stadium.

And I'd flip Adams off too if he shoved me, no matter how hard.

You are correct, he should have broken the little penis head's nose and then pushed his mouthy girlfriend down instead, just for being lame ass red fans.

Because you are retarded? Or because you don't like teams that actually win something?
