Police: Son Shoots Mother in the Head, Tries to Hide Body

A north city man shot and killed his mother at home and tried to hide her body, say the St. Louis Metropolitan Police.

The Circuit Attorney's Office charged Courtney Cunningham, 32, of the 4600 block of Pope Avenue, Wednesday with first degree murder and armed criminal action.

Police found the body of Cunningham's mother, Joyce Boxx, 56, Tuesday morning while checking on her at her home in the 4600 block of Pope Avenue after getting a call from a concerned relative. Boxx had several gunshot wounds to the head and torso, police say.

Cunningham confessed to shooting his mother with a handgun and trying to hide her corpse n the bathroom, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Investigators believe Boxx died sometime between 9 p.m. Sunday and 11:21 a.m. Tuesday.

Cunningham is in jail without bond. Court records show he has a prior forgery conviction from 2006.

Date/Time: 4/20/14 @ 21:00 - 4/22/14 @ 11:21

Victim: Joyce Boxx, 56-year old black female of the 4600 block of Pope

Suspect: Courtney, Cunningham, a 32-year old black male of the 4600 block of Pope

Warrants Issued: 1st Degree Murder and Armed Criminal Action

Bond: No bond

Officers responded to the above location for a call for "check on the well being" by family members of the victim. Once gaining entry into the residence, officers located the victim lifeless. The victim had sustained multiple gunshot wounds to the head and torso and was pronounced deceased on the scene. During the scene investigation, officers arrested the suspect, who is the son of the victim, in connection with the homicide. On 04/23/14, the Circuit Attorney's Office issued warrants for 1st Degree Murder and Armed Criminal Action.
A judge ordered the suspect held without bond.
