St. Louis Blues Take Out Newspaper Ad to Remind Fans How Disappointing Playoffs Were

Hey, you said it. Not us.
St. Louis Blues chairman Tom Stillman wrote a heartfelt letter to fans and season-ticket holders this weekend. In it, he came awfully close to apologizing for the team's playoff performance without actually using the words "I'm sorry."

Stillman took out a three-quarters ad on the back page of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch Sunday sports page to showcase the letter, wherein he admits that the Blues "fell short of expectations -- yours and ours -- in the playoffs." He also sent the letter to season-ticket holders via e-mail with the subject "Thank you for your support."

Did you see this in the paper on Sunday?
The Blues made a brisk exit from the playoffs after losing four games in a row, including one at home, to defending Stanley Cup champions the Chicago Blackhawks. To make things even more depressing, the Blues pulled off an odd repeat of last year's disappointment: In 2013, the Blues beat defending Stanley Cup champions Los Angeles Kings twice at home before four back-to-back losses ended their playoff run.

Though 2013 was bad, says Blues general manager Doug Armstrong, this year's loss to the Blackhawks was even worse, and not just because of the Midwestern rivalry.

"I felt last year that we were coming off of a year where no one expected us to be good the year before, and we wanted to prove that we were a good team," Armstrong tells the Associated Press. "I expected us to take it to a higher level this year, and the higher level was going to be a consistent regular season followed by a longer playoff run. So, this year, there's a true sense that we have squandered an opportunity, and opportunities don't come a lot in this league."

Despite winning 52 games this year, a record for the Blues, Armstrong and Stillman both say this season ended in disappointment.

"Our ownership group, management team, coaches and players share in everyone's disappointment that the season has come to such an abrupt end," Stillman says.

Here's the text of Stillman's note to fans:

Thank you very much for your tremendous support during the 2013-14 season. Our players took pride in leaving everything on the ice night after night, not only for each other, but also for each of you. Blues fans played a huge part in helping the team win a club record 52 games, with 28 of those wins taking place on Scottrade Center ice.

Despite many memorable moments this season, the bottom like is that we fell short of expectations -- yours and ours -- in the playoffs. Our ownership group, management team, coaches, and players share in everyone's disappointment that the season has come to such an abrupt end.

The entire Blues organization is committed to improving our playoff performance next season and beyond -- and to bringing St. Louis its first Stanley Cup. We can't thank you enough for the years of passion and dedication you've given the St. Louis Blues. We greatly appreciate your support.

Uh, am I wrong or have the Cubs won the Cardinals division 3 times in the last 10 years? Is that wrong? I was responding to a Cards fan who said the Cubs were always at the bottom. Sorry STL. It just isn't correct.

The amount of angry Cubs fans flooding this thread with bitter tears and revisionist history is my favorite part.

That's go to be one of the most insulting things to put out to loyal Blues fans!! First, we are eliminated by the Blackhawks(gag), then you compare them to the Cubs?!! Talk about kicking a man when he's down!!! NO! CLASS!!!!

The whole town of STL has a big inferiority complex which is sad

How to spot an uneducated hockey fan - Saying the Blues "only" played bad the last game? Are u serious? They played hard and stayed close but to think they were anywhere near the best team on the ice is BS. They got insanely lucky on 2 miracles the first 2 games then got swept. Boy those 04 Yankees that were up 3 games to zip sure played well except for the last game! Wtf is that thinking? The Blues kept it close but once the league said enough is enough after game 2 on the thug play, hockey was actually played and the Hawks ran off 4 straight. Just like the Kings did last year.

No matter the sport, St Louis sports "fans" cant do anything without bringing the Cubs into it.  pitiful

Let us be clear...NO ONE IS BAD ENOUGH TO BE CALLED THE CUBS OF ANYTHING. The Cubs suck with the intensity of a black hole. I wasn't that disappointed in my Blues. At least they made it to the playoffs. I thought they played GREAT hockey up until that last game. They forgot to show up for that last game and plain got out played. I still love the Blues....I just hate Chicago a whole lot more...lol. We will get em' next year!

Frank Mulholland Jr I'm a Blues Season ticket holder and I'll do you one better, the Blues lost to not only the better team but the best team in hockey. The Hawks are who the Blues want to be like. And I'm not a shamed to say it.

Frank Mulholland Jr

and you whined about the Blues and got blustery and butthurt over the Cubs. Real original for a STL fan. You people are more obsessed with the Cubs than Cubs fans are.

You don't have to slow it down for me sweetie:) you just compared the cubs and cardinals-that's cute.

Frank Mulholland Jr I'm sure you're a good guy but did you seriously just compare the Cubs to the Cardinals? The Cubs have been to the post season only 12 times in the past 100 years. The Cards have gone to the playoffs 10 of the last 14 including 2 World Series title's. The Blues are at least competitive. The Cubs have finished 25 games or more out of first place 32 times in the last 100 years.

And you know another thing to add that you will never hear a STL fan say is that the Blues were just flat out beaten by the better team this year. There is no shame in that and some honor in admitting it.

Frank Mulholland Jr

meh....they just got outplayed by the superior team this year. That is all it came down to. You could argue those first two wins were pretty lucky with late goals and what not.

And the guy below is right. The Cubs have won it all before. Not the Blues. Its just a sports fact.

Blues fans say Cubs b/c Chicago has had so much success in hockey lately they want to take a shot. So be it.

The Houston Astros/Texas Rangers are a much better comparison, if we're looking at baseball teams with comparable postseason success and time having existed.

Frank Mulholland Jr

Cards have won it 5 times last 10 years Cubs 3. Not that big of a difference to say the Cubs are always at the bottom. But you are right, I am talking to a Cards fan so I will slow down. The comparison with Cubs/Blues is that they never win a Championship and on that level the Cubs are actually better than the Blues who have never done it.

Cathy Ashen VanderMyde

actually LOVE baseball but that was 2007 -2008.. the blues are still not the cubs of hockey AND actually it is bad for baseball-my opinion BUT you are talking to a Cardinal fan:)

Cubs of hockey... Really is about choking in playoffs... Blues got it down pat.

Frank Mulholland Jr
Frank Mulholland Jr

hey lady you must not be much of a baseball fan either. Cubs won the division back to back in 2007 and 2008 and also won it in 2003. 3 times in 10 years aint bad in baseball.

Frank Mulholland Jr
Frank Mulholland Jr

Please. The Blues are nowhere near as likeable as the Cubs. The only thing they share in common is losing. I seem to remember some "Sweepy Sweepy" talk after they went up 2-0. There's many a slip between the cup and lip, St. Louis.

Jeremy Brooks

Unfair to call the Blues the "Cubs of hockey". While abysmal for 105+ years now, at least Cubs fans can boast that their team has actually WON the championship. Twice. Granted, nobody is alive to remember where they were when that happened, but I rest my case.

Patrick Sullivan

"Cubs of hockey" isn't really fair. At worst they're the Houston Astros of Hockey.
