White Woman Says She Was Kicked Out of African Arts Festival for Dancing While White

Are white people so oppressed these days that they can't even twirl around incoherently in glittery wings and tutus at arts festivals without getting discriminated against for the color of their skin? That's what Susan Stone, a.k.a. the "Dancer of Life," has been telling local media outlets after an incident at the African Arts Festival this past weekend.

But the truth might be more about ego than skin color.

Stone is well-known around St. Louis for attending festivals in colorful, butterfly-ballerina costumes and wowing (or confusing) audiences with her interpretive dance moves. But when she tried to inspire people through dance at the African Arts Festival in Forest Park, some folks just wanted her to stop.

Stone tells KMOV-TV (Channel 4) an employee reprimanded her for her dancing because she's white.

"He tells me, 'You can't be doing this here, this is an African American event. You can't be at this event. You're not black,'" Stone says. "I feel angry because they're missing out on the beauty of everything. We're all supposed to get along together. That's what God says."

The story went national, with some outlets making light of Stone's dance moves and other outlets pouncing on a possible example of reverse racism. And why not? A white person was told she couldn't attend a black event because she's white.

"Isn't it wonderful how tolerance only ever seems to go one way? " says a website called Mr. Conservative.

But Stone posted a video of the alleged racist exchange online, and it adds a bit more context to the story of a white person being told to stop dancing at a African American event. Also, it's a pretty absurd exchange on its own, even without the misconstrued racial stuff...

Watch the video of Stone's bizarre conversation with a festival employee and read about her tire-slashing spree on page two.

What about "Baton Bob" before he moved to Atlanta doing his fairy dance in the St Patrick's Day Parade? He didn't exactly fit into the Irish cultural theme.

Beatle Bob can stay though. He is at least nice and respectful.

I might be inclined to kick him/her out of my festival too, if I were to have one. Then he/she can't play the race card, because I'd be kicking her out for disturbing the peace.

Beatle Bob, while creepy, does not distract from the show, nor do the hoopers, in my opinion

I've had 3 separate discussions with white people recently who engaged with me over this article as they cite the unfair reporting of black on white racism in STL supported by the media. They each want to have the media show greater respect for whites and their struggle in our community.

Hope you don't mind but I copy & pasted this comment of yours under Tony Santander's comment. Some people just don't get it! Your comment was exactly what I was trying to say & I thank you!

I have been at many outdoor concerts and events where she has danced around in the middle of the audience. She is disrepectful to the actual performers people came to see and she is very disrespectful to the other audience members. I have often wished she would be asked to behave appropriately or to leave.

Beatle Bob doesn't heckle or interupt, at least in my experience

I'm sorry, but you call yourself the Dancer of Life, but you are a mentally ill person who craves attention whether good or bad. Do your thing and don't bother other people in the process.

Maybe "she" could move to Atlanta with Baton Bob.

Well if race didn't have anything to do with it, why did the worker bring it up. This isn't a Caucasian festival, this isn't a European festival. Sounds racist to me...

Wack job. He posts all kinds of creepy dancing videos on you tube.

Ha. I love how this video was TOTALLY edited for the local news stations. The only part you saw on their version of the story was the employee (dreadlock) claiming she/he couldn't be there because it's the African American festival not the European Dance Festival. It's almost like a warped female Beatle Bob. Please, just leave our St. Louis talent alone. Go be crazy elsewhere!! Thanks #RFT for reporting the real story and posting the real video.

True. Alex and I saw her "dancing" at the Japanese Festival last year dressed like a jacked up Sailor Moon. Totally distracted from the real performers.

This transgender individual is INSANE! He's been arrested for slashing tires and stealing city water. I've unfortunately dealt with him personally before. He his plain rude. I have NO sympathy for him.

I'm surprised this asshole got re-posted. Attention and discord (among us!) is just what she's looking for. Let her go.

Hahahaha! She wasn't kicked out "because she was white", she was kicked out because she was doing interpretive dance that did not GO with the arts festivals presentation...... Ego, not skin color, for sure...

probably has nothing to do with how crazy she may have been acting, huh?,,, tell the whole story or drop it, so over the media telling or leading with just part of something

Anyone who organizes an event--be it the St. Patrick ' s Day Parade, Annie Malone, Pridefest, Komen, Columbus Day, whatever--should have the right to say who participates. If you're not on the program, you don't perform. Why one is not on the program doesn't matter.

I think we need to hold a 'Dancer of Life' festival in Forest Park. We all come dressed as Susan and when she comes on stage to dance for us we block every single move she makes.

Lindsey I don't believe you need to apologize. When people perceive other humans based on their actions they deserve criticism. Susan 'Dancer of Life' acts like a cartoon in the public and yes she acts like a 'nasty old foot stomping angry man in a frock' 99% of the time. Perception is everything and trust me when I say she is doing very little to help the transgender cause when she interrupts an event like this. The fact that she (in her own words in her video) says how she is going to make the black people look bad because who she is - well she has lost my support. She is acting like the white transgender who cried black wolf, no? No I won't allow Susan to hijack gender expression. My transgender sisters and brothers don't tolerate this garbage. They have come way too far and struggled way too much to be lumped into Susan's ego train.

That man is a nutcase and needed to be removed from the event. He should have started his own event of transgender ballerinas next month or something.
