Missouri Executes John Winfield: Final Appeals Denied by Supreme Court

Categories: Death Penalty

Update 11:45 p.m.: John Winfield wasn't the only inmate scheduled to die Tuesday night.

Marcus Wellons -- a Georgia man who raped and murdered a 15-year-old girl in 1989 -- was pronounced dead at 11:56 p.m., according to the AP.

Like Missouri, Georgia uses a single lethal dose of pentobarbital to execute its death-row inmates; also like Missouri, Georgia hides identity of the compounding pharmacy that makes the killing drug. Lawyers for both men challenged their respective states to reveal how its prison officials acquired the pentobarbital, but to no avail.

Wellons was the first inmate to be executed in the U.S. since April 29 , when a botched execution in Oklahoma resulted in Clayton Lockett taking more than 40 minutes to die.

So, how did Georgia's execution go? The New York Times' Alan Binder reports the process went off "without abnormality," and took about twenty minutes. Also, a guard apparently fainted.

I oppose the death penalty on spiritual and moral grounds.  Life without parole is sufficient punishment and keeps the offender away from society.  Killing is wrong. It's wrong when a person kills and it's wrong when the state kills.  We the People should not empower our government to take life in OUR name.

A St. Louis County Jury infected by racial bias; -Juror's Sworn Declaration
Admittedly feuding ineffective defense attorneys who were hardly speaking and refused to collaborate on trial strategy, witness preparation or to back each other up in a capital case; -Defense Attorney's Sworn Declaration
Jury intimidation; -Juror's Sworn Declaration
Failure to investigate, prepare and call readily available witnesses; -Defense Attorney's Sworn Declaration
A capital defendant denied his Constitutional right to testify and to call witnesses on his behalf; -Defense Attorney's Sworn Declaration
A life evidenced remarkable contributions and the power of God's loving redemption. -Sworn Declarations of Correctional Officers, Inmates, People whose lives where forever changed for good by meeting John Winfield.
Another day of "justice" in America!

The state got it's pond of flesh but you got make a difference. While your actions cannot be justified, you took what was meant for harm and used it for good.  RIP John!

Now, bring on the BS attacks.  Better still, keep it to yourself because I don't give a d*mn!

Like Baretta said, don't do the crime, if you can't do the time. We reap what we sow. Glad justice is served for the family of the victims at last

I'm opposed to the capital punishment but I don't feel sorry for this guy.

Yeah because freeing a man who murdered two women is a great idea. Unbelievable.

I'll accept that title, considering the choice on how to spend my taxes isn't up to me. How many more do I have left to "murder" on death row? Could they hurry up, so my children and public service workers can get their monies. I mean, seriously, they're of much more importance than the pond scum of MO death row "survivors".

Why is this a story? He was a coward and killed people..... Wtf is this supposed to stir my heart against capital punishment? He got what he deserved regardless of how repentant he was... Cause he knew he was doomed. My problem is that it takes two decades to die in our system.

I'll gladly be a murderer if people like this coward are put down

@sueinthelou You list articles about ineffective counsel and a biased jury which seem to advocate commuting Winfield's death sentence.  Your statements thereafter leave me confused. Do you approve of the execution?  Are you for or against capital punishment?

No, many more to pay for and worry about.  All the short timers who will return to the streets without the benefit of JW's wisdom, guidance, help and encouragement to turn their lives around will see you soon.  Actually, JW was of economic benefit to Mo taxpayers.

Perhaps since you're such an advocate for the state as a killing machine, you'd consider volunteering yourself or your children to determine the effectiveness of the secret execution drugs from the secret sources?  Just saying, anything for the cause, correct?
