St. Louis Mostly Likes Its New Professional Soccer Team's Name

We're not the St. Louis Arches, the Pioneers or River City FC.

Saint Louis Football Club is the newly official, no-fuss name of St. Louis' newest professional sports franchise, and the club's supporters seem pretty much fine (though not exactly ecstatic) with it.

Soccer fans have been suggesting names for the United Soccer Leagues team based on St. Louis landmarks, animals and other team-name inspirations for weeks now. Fans supported a traditional and simple name like Saint Louis Football Club from the beginning. But after all that guessing, many soccer supporters (and Daily RFT, for that matter) were betting on something slightly more exciting team name, especially one of the most consistently popular proposals, the St. Louis Chupacabras.

"The thing to take away from this is that it's not a BAD name," the St. Louligans posted on Facebook after the team name announcement. "[There are] plenty of horrible sports names out there, and we are not one of them. Simple. Traditional. Clean."

If your heart was set on cheering for the Chupacabras, there is still this:

Fans still have a say over the team's logo. At noon, the club's organizers will post options on Facebook for fans to vote on.

The Saint Louis Football Club, or STLFC, as we expect everyone to abbreviate it, joins a not-so-long history of soccer team names: St. Louis Stars, St. Louis Steamers, St. Louis Athletica, St. Louis Ambush, A.C. St. Louis.

Hmmmm..... more pretending to be from somewhere else. It's soccer in the US and Canada. The letters I got in high school were from soccer, not football. Football is, well, football. But hipsters and wannabe hipsters will be happy with the name.

Real fans of soccer will support the team not the name. It's really not that big an issue.

I don't like soccer, but I might like this team (since it's from St. Louis!)

Ooh, Kareem Deanes, are you excited? Also, this is the kind of name a football team is supposed to have. Well done St Louis.

Yet another reason I'm glad I left St. Louis... That's not even a team name, it's a thing. And it should be Futbol if they are going to go that route anyway. Terrible decision, the Arches was cool and made sense. I don't even like soccer or live there anymore, and it still pisses me off.

St Louis FC. What else would it be? Nicknames and mascots are secondary for football clubs. It's about representing the city and the people.

Then what do the Rams play? Nevermind. That was a bad example.

Yes, Daniel Stout, that's why I said it. Thanks for the contribution.

Had they chosen something crypto zoological, I may have been enticed to watch some soccer.

You are correct that you really do not "get" soccer.

..... it's just a tad... dull... I mean, I can't complain too much 'cause it's accurate, at least. *shrug*

Yeah, if the fans are cool with it, it's all good, I suppose. I just wouldn't expect to get much outreach, or "convert" very many non soccer fans with the name.

We're in the states. It's not called football here it's called soccer. We already have a football club called the rams.

This, once again, confirms that I really don't "get" soccer. I couldn't imagine being okay with "St. Louis Hockey Club" or "St. Louis Baseball Team." I mean, what do you chant? "Yeah! Go... Umm... Soccer Club."
