Looking for a historic hidden gem of a city to visit this summer? The travel website Orbitz says St. Louis should be on your bucket list.

In honor of the long Fourth of July weekend, Orbitz senior editor Jeanenne Tornatore published a list of the five beautiful places every American should visit. St. Louis earns a spot on the list with its historical attractions, including the Old Courthouse, the Museum of Westward Expansion, the Museum of Transportation and Forest Park, home to the 1904 World's Fair.

Tornatore took her curated list to the Today Show, touting St. Louis' free attractions, the Gateway Arch, and the Loop neighborhood, especially the "boutique" Moonrise Hotel.

"A lot of these smaller Midwest cities are often overlooked," Tornatore says. Her other four choices are in the West or on the East Coast: Houston, Texas; the San Juan Islands in Washington; Estes Park, Colorado; and Charlottesville, Virginia.

"St. Louis is second only to Washington, D.C., in terms of free attractions and museums," Tornatore continues, getting an audible, "Oh!" of surprise out of Hoda Kotb.

"There's a lot to do here."

Crime is real and needs to be addressed in a meaningful way. However, St. Louis still has a safer "feel" than many other cities including New Orleans, Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, Atlanta, Philadelphia, Memphis, and many other downtowns and city centers. If you have traveled a lot you know what I mean and can relate.

Mark Sullivan I grew up in Granite, crime wasn't an issue then things have changed. But no place near here has senseless shootings like St Louis.

Really? Every city has crime, to include Granite City. I've lived in other cities, and been away from this area for a long time. I can assure you, other cities have crime. The problem is the city and county are separate, bring them together, and viola, lower crime rate

All cities have Crime, you can't move anywhere and not have crime. Get out and live in other places before you gripe about crime in St Louis.

For a visitor, the biggest hassle is the the various points of interest are not all within walking distance and we don't have the sort of widely-used public transportation found in a city like Chicago, Boston, DC, or San Francisco. One's own vehicle or a rental is almost essential if the to-visit list includes things like downtown, Forest Park, the Missouri River wineries along Hwy. 94, Six Flags, the Loop, the rivers' confluence, and the Museum of Transportation. Lots of gems, but sprinkled widely about.

See how friendly St. Louis is???? And btw, I unfortunately still have family there. I worry about my 84 year old Mom in that narrow minded, hateful place. Thanks for helping me prove my point.

Just don't go north of Delmar, and if you're coming from the East, do NOT stop until you reach the Missouri State Line.

I was born and raised in St Louis. Moved away 7 years ago and regret it. I can't wait to move back next summer. I love St Louis!

We need to be realistic and understand that St. Louis has a crime problem in many areas, however, St. Louis has many gems: The Zoo, the Museums, Imo's, the Peabody Opera House, good Italian food, good BBQ, well acclaimed universities (especially Washington University and St. Louis University) that attract the best and brightest from around the world.

Is that they can see what poor and rundown looks like up close. GET ROBED and shot. Tell them to stay inside at night. In the day there is so much to do and forest park takes the for front in nice things to do. yes do come , but leave before night. Watch what corner you turn on. It is nice and very bad at the same time

Part of the issue...for some reason stl is always trying to show off and say we are just as good as other, more culture rich, planned, and balanced cities...in reality its just a bunch of mis-matched people who can't get their shit together...no common bond.

Yes, I agree this city is a run-down hole compared to what was once a magical, beautiful, and mysterious gem on the map, but, there is still much culture (i.e. free zoo, free science center, free botanical gardens, over 1200 free seats at the Muny.....not to mention the Fox and many other cultural and historical places to explore.... it's people who say it is trash, who make it trash.

Great article! I truly have a love/hate relationship with this city. I know we have so much cool stuff, but we also have so much to work on. Always room for improvement. I'm always happy to see positive national attention. :)
