"Please don't make us leave, Michaels!"
Employees at the Brentwood Michaels caused a stir on social media this week after telling a nursing mother she had to go outside to breastfeed, despite the store's policy.

Jessa Marie says she and her mother were shopping for supplies her daughter's first birthday party when she realized her daughter needed to nurse. An employee told her she should go outside, where summer temperatures were in the 90s, which violates both the store's policy and a recently adopted state law.

After Marie refused to go outside and talked to a manager, an employee turned a chair in the craft room toward a wall and told her she could nurse there.

Here's Marie's account:

Marie returned the $120 of party supplies she bought from Michaels and filed a complaint.

The store responded Tuesday with an apology:

Under Michaels' Facebook apology, Marie thanked the customer who stood up to the Michaels employees and said she should be able to nurse at the store:

Hello, I am the mother who was asked to nurse outside at the Michael's Store. Thank you very much for your apology, I greatly appreciate it. I think it is important to note that it was not one associate but two associates and a manager who had an issue with me breastfeeding in the store. It was a customer who came to my aid so that I was able to nurse in the craft room. That being said, I am so happy to learn that Michael's has a wonderful policy in place for nursing mothers, and applaud you for making sure that this is known throughout the company so that nothing like this ever happens again. Thank you!!

I'm very surprised that she had this experience, and disappointed. I cant help but assume that the employees just didn't know what to do.

I'm a gay farm boy and this is about as normal as you can get. If any woman wants to breastfeed feed a baby it is OK by me. It is not a sexual thing. That baby needs nourishment and he will rest after feeding and be quiet wahooo. Women in my family can't breastfeed feed and I wish my daughter could breastfeed in public. My grandkids would have better health if they were breastfeed.

No lawsuits or protest. Just good common sense on Moms part and Michaels upper management.Nicely handled.

Were the employees African 'Merican females? (supervisor overweight, others younger but angry)? that would be my guess if I had to bet a paycheck on it

Bro response: She can breastfeed at my house anytime she wants....... Ya, nailed it.... High fives

If you show your boobs in public it is indecent exposure you can go to jail for that unless you're breastfeeding

You say you don't wanna see any part of a women's breast when breast feeding but all these girls wear hardly any clothes and I don't see anyone pitching a bitch fit over that? This is something that has been around forever and something so natural. Everyone is different and all babies are different some don't like covers some due. This shouldn't be a huge problem like it is. It honestly disgust me how rude people are when it comes to breast feeding

If you have a problem with breastfeeding in public you are either immature or insecure with your own body (or both). I can't believe this is even an issue!

Crazy that Michaels would treat mothers like this-seeing as over half of their customers are new mothers; mothers with grown children and daughters who may need to nurse-and people that work with children who at sometime were nurses. Imagine if all of those people stopped going to Michaels stores. I bet they would look at the bigger picture than-rather than just their own "beliefs". However-in a workplace there is policy and procedure-not to mention State laws-so your own selfishness does not over ride what the laws are. Get over it and grow up.

I had a problem with it, when it came to me breastfeeding in public. I couldn't be all hung out like that. I felt uncomfortable. I also don't like it when women do it in restaurants. I don't care if it's natural, I don't want to see a boob or any other private part (or blood, people spitting in napkins, sucking their teeth, and blowing their nose at the table) while I am eating, it is gross.

For the record, NO man has a problem with this, you'll find that its mostly other women that bitch.

If you have sexualized breast-feeding in your own mind, then feeling uncomfortable around breast feeding is kind of your own problem.

Who are these people that complain? I breast 3 kids for a total of 5 years and never once had anyone complain.

I will whip a boob out and feed my child without thinking twice, and could not care less if it offends you. You want to know why?!?... because it's GD natural. Boobs are made to feed children. Get over yourselves people. So glad she stood up for herself!

LOL.....good point Josh....and good for you. People are so hung up on this issue STILL. We should be past this at least 25 years ago.

They should apologize...however...it was probably just a misguided employee...not store policy. I challenge all new mothers to breastfeed in public as much as possible so that we can finally change peoples perception on this issue. It's a boob. Not a bomb. It's a hungry baby who needs to eat. Not a threat to national security. Get a grip folks.

Hey I am not letting them sway me its my opinion and they are the ones being closed minded . Bottom line I don't want my son to see some other womans breast or subject a woman to some weirdo with a fetish out in public.

I love how no matter what option is present or suggested these women are like nope.... Nope.... Nope.... There are MILLIONS of mothers, and guess what? Everyone's different... Some moms don't care and some moms cover up... Some people are offended some aren't. But guess what? Your opinion isn't the only one. And it dosent mean that you're right and others are wrong.

Attacked? Hardly, no one name called, threw out threats....just suggestions and information for you to consider. Ultimately your suggestions have no bearing anyway, the law supports a mothers right to bf in public with/without a cover in almost every state (the degree varies). I am just amazed that there are people who think that's an appropriate area to feed an infant....it baffles my mind. While I don't agree with people even demanding a woman use a cover, at least I get that argument. And yes, breasts are highly sexualized in our culture...I think that says a lot about the state of so many in our society who consider the sexual nature of breasts to be more important than the primary role of breasts: to provide nourishment to our offspring. And this comes from someone who never bf without a cover/only nursed in nursing rooms or at home, not everyone wants to bf in the open....but I completely support their right to do so. When I was childless in my twenties I'm sure my opinion was much different, but having experienced the trials and tribulations of bf I have the utmost respect for any woman who found a successful way to bf (even if it's different from my experience).

I knew a guy in high school that ate his lunch in the bathroom everyday. Probably because his mom was shamed into feeding him there as a baby and he got used to it.

Jennifer Grotpeter

Actually, it is not illegal to bear your breasts in Missouri as long as you are doing it in a non sexual way. you can ride your bike down the street topless if you want to, and Missouri has very specific laws making it okay to breastfeed wherever you are already allowed to be. So I will stick with Joannes for my significant crafty needs. I go through a lot of yarn.

Kat Kes

Brandon Herges you do realize the mouth isn't biologically meant for sexual pleasure but is used for it nonetheless. Same with breasts. So yeah if women should cover their breasts to feed a child then you should cover your mouth to drink a soda.

There is nothing wrong with breastfeeding in public. I did it. Yeah, I got "looks" from some people but no one ever said anything to me.

Proper varies so much culture to culture. You know what's proper? Using a tool for it's intended purpose. Breasts are tools to feed children with. I'm so sorry your brainwashed into thinking your own body is disgusting & needs to be covered up when doing what it's supposed to do.
