Cop in Ferguson Tweets Lies to Justify Tear-Gassing Protesters in Their Own Back Yard

One of the many tear-gas canisters fired on Ferguson this month.
A Velda City police officer who has been part of the militarized police apparatus holding down operations on West Florissant Avenue is spreading lies about Ferguson protesters online.

Sergeant Mike Weston, going by the handle "officeranon2" on Twitter, engaged with users of the social-media network about a tear-gas attack by St. Louis County police on protesters in their own back yard on Monday, August 11. In the conversation, a Twitter user wanted to know why police would fire tear gas at people on their own property. Weston tells them it's because protesters were firing guns from their back yard. But that's not true, as evidenced in the video below.

Daily RFT was in the back yard that was tear-gassed and caught the incident on video. No shots were ever fired anybody in the back yard, and each person had their hands up in protest.

Here's that video:

Daily RFT contacted the Velda City Police Department, and Weston confirmed the account was his and explained the allegations he made against Ferguson residents who were attacked with tear gas on their own property.

"I wasn't spreading misinformation," he said. "There were shots being fired some yards, maybe not this particular one."

Weston then admitted that he wasn't in the group of police officers that was marching down the street and firing tear gas into yards. He said he was in the back closer to the command center, several blocks away.

Although Weston claims shots were fired from "some yards," that wasn't the reason that the St. Louis County Police Department gave for this tear gas attack.

Sergeant Colby Dolly, the chief aide to Police Chief John Belmar, said they used tear gas in the video because the people in their back yard looked like they were up to no good.

"The behavior of the individuals on the video would indicate their intent was something other than peaceful behavior," Dolly wrote in an email last week.

He further explained that because there had been looting the previous night, the police didn't feel comfortable with people being out in their back yard.

"Keep in mind, there was blatant disregard for property rights the last two nights, and officers had little information to determine if a person was rightfully on property, therefore the commands to disperse were given," he wrote.

In the same Twitter conversation of the backyard attack, Weston also gives a simple reason why tear gas was lobbed at an Al Jazeera TV crew last week: The police were just trying to save them, and sometimes bad things happen in a "war zone."

Weston's Twitter feed, which was deleted moments after he spoke to Daily RFT, also has some other insights into the mind of an officer working one of the strictest security details for a street protest in American history.

This video was probably 'doctored up' by a mb supporter just like the phone recording. Along with the lie, 'hands up, don't shoot' which really was 'hands down, shoot' or better yet....'pants down, loot'. What a bunch of dumb fools.

@GarlandNixon I wonder what the rest of the incident was like. There is nothing like old fashioned restraint. Smh

I know MO is not the only place this is happening, but I know this is happening in Missouri.  Even though my family is from St. Louis, it's not a safe place to go, the police are too dangerous.  I'm never going back.

Yeah and a whole mess of IDIOTS gave money to raise money for this bully cop on a funding site.  Guess he'll be paying his KKK dues with that 250K.

Doesn't the department have a social media policy this violates?  Most do now...

That's really terrific.  Folks who live in the proximity of where a young black man was murdered now can't even have a BBQ in their own back yards or attempt to return their lives to something resembling normalcy after 2 weeks of cop-induced PTSD, but instead have to SEQUESTER themselves inside houses that probably are upwards of 100 degrees and humid as a sauna?  Swell...

So as it turns out OfficerAnon2, better known as Sergeant Mike Weston was not even there, had no idea why the tear gas was fired ito the yards and is, in effect, a lying sack of crap. Just some truth in advertising.

Unfortunately this is the mentality of most north county cops. On the flipside, the communities need to do more to stop this behavior and cleanup their communities too. Stop turning a blind eye to those who are ruining the neighborhoods.

That video didn't load for me. I've seen it already, though. Simply NO excuse to lob gas at people on their own peoperty. Doesn't matter if they were "instigating". Cops should be able to ignore a taunt like an adult. Those citizens were clearly yelling that they were in their own yard. Cops just didn't give a shit.

Darren's left side of his face was swollen, but his eye socket was not broken. He was taken for ex-rays after the shooting.

Watch the video more carefully. Mike brown hands Dorian Johnson a box of cigars at the beginning of the transaction to hold, and he continues to talk to clerk, suggesting that they are talking about the price of the box of cigars. The cigars are more expensive than an individually wrapped pack of swishers. When Mike Brown seems angry and pulls out the display box of Swishers, none of the Swishers from INSIDE the box fall. The only thing to fall on the ground were swishers that were laying in between the display box and Mike Brown. This indicates that Mike Browns outrage may have been caused by the teller demanding that the box of cigars Johnson is holding be returned before she would hand Mike Brown the four individual packs of swishers he just purchased, placing them in front of the swisher dispensary box, but not handing them to Mike Brown. Thus, angered by the insinuation that they were there to rob them, Mike Brown pulls the display box out, knocking his purchase to the ground. Assumably the cashier tells him she meant nothing by it, and Mike returns the display case of swishers and Dorian Johnson places the box of cigars to the counter. Mike then bends down and counts in front of the teller the number of swishers to make sure he has them all, as if he had purchased them, calmly in front of the teller. Upset at how his employee was treated and again suspecting them of theft, the store owner, as identified by the stores attorney, attempts to lock the door and demands to search them. Outraged again, Mike pushes him out of the way, having returned box of cigars they could have easily ran at full speed with out of the store with if their intent had been theft. I had to watch it five times, because I wasn't sure either. The problem with them just not running out the front door with the loot at full speed was the changing factor for me. Also, Store Attorney says it was an "Attempted Robbery" several times in an interview with local news. Store Attorney also confirms that neither the store owner nor any employees called the police. Media reports that a customer did. Tapes were turned over to the police when the police later went to the store after the shooting and requested them. Are you sure you want to trust any news source owned by a billionaire?

What's the difference? Every one of you hipster loads covering this shit has been spreading shit and smearing the police from the start of this crisis. There is nothing wrong with objective reporting, as a matter of fact most of us would welcome it, but you walking colostomy bags wouldn't know what that was if it bounced off of your unethical fucking skulls like a smoking tear gas canister. Your narrative from day one has been 'fuck the police!' while you refuse to dig for all sides of the story. Maybe this cop was a murderous bastard, maybe he wasn't. Maybe the kid was a good kid who did some truly stupid shit that day including attacking a cop and getting his stupid self shot, we don't really know. We don't know all of the facts.

But what I do know is that you clowns are getting the facts, your posting the shit that stirs the most controversy, fanning the flames to boost your fucking ratings and page clicks. You fucking ghouls. You insufferable fucksticks. Maybe normal people should riot and protest outside your fucking offices to show the word how the media has become a shadow of what you are fucking supposed to be. Infotainment rating boosting asshole licking toilet hounds. You all fucking suck.

Where did you see evidence of Wilson's injuries?  I have been looking at the vids and pix from the crime scene and there is no evidence of injury.  He stayed at the scene for 40 minutes and left IN HIS PATROL VEHICLE, which if his story of being pushed into the car was true, was part of the crime scene.

@j.m.hackler People who wait for all the facts before they decide they have all the answers? This situation was a complete and total fuckarow because a whole lot of knees starting jerking all at once. Media like the RFT decided it was in their best interest to fan the flames. Page clicks = money afterall
