Protesters Demand Improved Police Accountability at Downtown Demonstration

Protesters rally in front of the Thomas Eagleton Courthouse Tuesday.
Approximately 150 protesters rallied in downtown St. Louis Tuesday afternoon to protest police brutality and announce a set of demands they want enacted by officials at the local and national level.

The demands announced by protesters centered largely on police reform and accountability. But they also included several direct demands related to the investigation of the Michael Brown shooting, including the "immediate arrest" of Darren Wilson, the Ferguson police officer who fatally shot the eighteen-year-old August 9.

"We are going to bring that gunman to justice, and I mean that," said rapper Tef Poe, a Riverfront Times contributor and a constant presence at the Ferguson protests since they began the day after the Brown shooting.

Other demands related to the investigation include St. Louis County prosecutor Bob McCulloch to step down and allow a special prosecutor to handle the investigation into the Brown shooting, as well as the firing of Ferguson police chief Thomas Jackson.

"If [Jackson] can come out every day and lie and construct stories when he said he's not in charge of the investigation in the first place, then why is he still on camera, lying every day?" said activist Taurean Russell.

The protesters also demanded that broad reform measures to be taken, including changes in how police shootings are investigated, civilian review of those shootings and a rapid de-escalation of militarized policing during protests.

"What they're waiting on and banking on is for the cameras to leave to use some of this tear gas and rubber bullets to play Call of Duty in real life," Russell said.

At the national level, the protesters want the U.S. Department of Justice to conduct a nationwide investigation into the systematic police brutality and harassment of minority communities, as well as better transparency by requiring all police officers to wear front-facing cameras and for police departments to record race statistics in stops, arrests, killings and excessive-force complaints.

Here's the full list of the protesters' demands:

The rally was organized by Hands Up United, a coalition group that includes the Organization for Black Struggle and Missourians Organizing for Reform and Empowerment.

Hands Up United, which had several solidarity rallies across the country, according to its website, has two more events planned for this week. On Thursday, the group says, it will deliver 800,000 signatures to the White House requesting a full investigation into the Brown shooting and for implementation of police-accountability measures.

On Friday the group will hold the Black Lives Matter Ride, which will "bring concerned citizens from across the country into St. Louis, Missouri, as part of a national call to end state violence against Black people," according to the Hands Up United website.

And sometimes when thug is unarmed they might not have a gun, but the might have a weapon or knife instead...

Both armed robbers, and unarmed robbers on the cops show, and in real life they both resist arrest, and attack the cops during struggles now why is that? It only makes things worse when they do that.

And what I learned from Michael brown story, and show COPS is that respect the cops, don't resist arrest when a person does a crime, do not run away from cop, just say arrest me after you get caught during the crime, do not resist arrest cause it will only bring more struggles, and also do not attack cops during a struggle. And also being a cop is not easy they have to face the Hardest job everyday trying to stop thugs during crime. The cop did his job he got thug off the streets, the cop is going to get them off the street any way by arresting which doesn't always work out right cause people, and thugs always resist an arrest. And or the cops will shoot them off the streets..

I am one of the most even handed of people. And I never post personal comments on Facebook. However, this entire incident has forced me to stand up. I do not own a firearm of any kind and I am sad that there is a requirement for men and women to enforce our laws requiring that they are armed. How can we expect these men and women to risk their lives on a daily basis, literally, all the while being human, confounds me. A man, known or unknown to be a criminal, attacks a member of law enforcement, which by all accounts is the case, and will not stop when ordered to do so, seemingly leaves an officer no choice but to protect himself. I have watched all the news conferences from all sides and all I am left with is that Michael Brown was bum rushing the officer. after pummeling him earlier, when the fatal shot was fired.

Bad Boys, Bad Boys what you gonna do when they come for you, remember that show; (or catch you doing a crime like Michael Brown did). Oh in that show all kids, teens, and adults did crimes and they resisted arrest, and attacked the COPS during the arrest just like Michael brown did. Some of the people on show called cops get either beat up by cops, or shot out like Michael brown, blacks or white, or any color or race even on the show called cops. But my main point is even in the show the thugs always made the police get provoked into shooting them, cause they the thus always attacked police during arrest. And the police were only trying to defend them selves. When a cop tries to arrest a person after they did a crime; if the person runs away, and says dont shot in way that's also trying to resist an arrest by the way. And plus do you think the cop is going to make them get away with the crime. A cops job is what to still arrest them or try to arrest when doing what? A Crime. So if you run away that considered resisting an arrest. So see the cop followed Michael brown cause in away he resisted arrest the now the 1st time, and the cop said freeze. And the cop said put your hands up, just the way they always do, and that's when the confrontation had started, and that's when they had the struggle. And that when Michael brown had attacked the cop. See brown wanted run away and get away with the crime that he committed. See when a person runs away from the cops, during a crime or after a crime that the person committed it only makes it more worse. Cause that is also considered resisting an arrest. Thug Michael brown should have said okay arrest me, not dont shoot me, cause at that time the cop was not going to shoot. And the thug Michael brown was no angel, and he was for sure not Gentle Giant at all. Remember people he had committed a crime. Brown robbed a store, attacked store owner, and seconds later attacked cop during a struggle. And yes their was a struggle at some parts of this story or case. Infact brown went to grab the cops gun during struggle, again that only makes thing worse. Cause now the police officer feels his life is going to be threatened. Oh the thug is going for my gun during the struggle the cops says not what? Plus brown also attacked the police officer Wilson. Infact in some reports of this case it says that brown actually did attack the cop. And Actually the only way to get thugs off the streets is to either arrest them ( but when they get out of jail they will only strike again, and do the crime again, again, again, why cause the thugs that do crime. And the other way to get them off the streets is to shot them during an struggle or when they attack the cops like in this case with Michael Brown. And if you shot them see at least they can't do the crime again, and or rob store attack store owner, and also attack cops like brown did.

Some people there have valid demands.

What about the looter who only got three of the 20" rims for their car. How will they ever find the 4th rim? Or those thugs that mob-smashed and looted the liquor stores and did not successfully snatch a full case of Hennessy?' Hows that gonna make a sick bro' rap party on Labor day?

They may as well arrest him. He will get out in 24 hours anyway cause they don't have anything to charge him with. And legally in the state of Missouri he can only be held for 24 without being charged. And since the grand jury hasn't come back with an indictment then he'll be free to go. Ignorant people giving a list of demands without knowing the laws. Makes everyone asking for immediate arrest look like idiots. Congrats!

Yes, people, let the courts work it out, after ALL, YES, ALL THE EVIDENCE IS RECEIVED, REVIEWED, AND AN DECISION IS REACHED. And if you didn't hear, a Texas police chief was gunned down & died a few days ago, and YES DIED, FROM MULTIPLE SHOTS TO ABDOMEN AND SHOULDER by a 24 yr old Mexican, when he stopped the kids vehicle, and walked up to checkout during a traffic stop on warrant !! So should protests begin now OH, SAYING HE WAS WHAT, INNOCENT OF UNLOADING HIS WEAPON INTO THIS POLICEMANS BODY......JUST SAYN..

I really enjoyed that comment about "white people being to lazy to protest", actually a large group including myself stood with others stood with signs for officer Wilson this past Saturday, see those of us that work 50 hours a week to provide foodstamps and welfare for a good percentage of the troublemakers in this situation need to rest after we work so yeah I guess we are lazy

Let me explain something to you. i know, its going to be hard, but just shut your pie hole for a second and try to understand. this is about lump injustice. this isnt about JUST mike brown. Mike Brown was the last drop into a cup that was soon to run over.. as a WHOLE, they are sick of it AS a WHOLE. sick of being targets, sick of people pushing them down with their thumb, all while saying "why cant you get up?" Doing his duty was NOT shooting at the kid ... there are actual murderers who were apprehended without being killed.. it was possible. no matter what the situation. the OUTRAGE is for ALL of it to stop.

There are 34,000 arrests each day in the united states, fewer than ONE PERCENT involve the shooting of an unarmed subject. I'd say that's pretty damn accountable. Let the system work.

shoot first and look for other means later, right?  Kind of like the guy with the knife a few days later who was nice enough to move away from the crowd of people before pleading for the cops to kill him... 16 whole seconds after they got there they obliged...  they had non-lethals, they knew he was unstable, he never made it off the cider block to get to them... they just chose to shoot first and then AFTER he was dead they handcuffed him.... wtf are you handcuffing a corpse for?
