Many Arrests in Ferguson as Another Police Shooting Sparks New Outrage in STL

Police get ready to make an arrest Tuesday in Ferguson.
Tuesday saw two protests over separate police shootings: the continuation of the Ferguson saga and a new protest in north St. Louis over the killing of a man armed only with what witnesses claim was a butter knife.

The new protest sprung up in front of the location of St. Louis' latest police shooting. Early Tuesday, 23-year-old Kajieme Powell was shot dead by an officer of the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department. According to witnesses, Powell walked out of the store on Riverview Boulevard and MacLaren Avenue without paying for a pastry.

When police encountered him, he acted strangely -- talking to himself and talking to officers about how his mother had recently died. Witnesses say Powell had mental-health problems.

See all Riverfront Times coverage of Michael Brown and Ferguson.

At one point, Powell took out a knife and came towards the police officers. When he came within several feet and reached back with the knife, he was shot dead.

After the killing, people gathered around the convenience store to talk about the shooting. The crowd built-up after a few hours, according to bystanders. And many were angry and looking for answers.

"They shot another black boy," a mother was overheard saying to her young daughter.

"Both officers fired at least five shots from their weapons," said Robert Addison, who says he witnessed the killing. "I thought it was excessive. Shooting him multiple times like that? He was going down from the one shot. They opened up on him."

Approximately 100 people were gathered on the corner where Powell was shot, watched closely by a group of police officers.

Standing on a corner with a sign that read, "My son was killed by police, too," Betty Davis, 59, said she's still looking for justice. She said she was never given details of the investigation conducted by the SLMPD. Just a few days ago, she was in Ferguson to protest another police shooting.

"When I came out to protest about a week ago, I was hoping somebody would let me speak out," she said. "They let me speak, and it felt like a burden was lifted off of me. Seems like somebody will try to get me some help."

In front of the store, three young men were holding a religious service as another group chanted. Many more were hanging out, talking about police brutality. A young man pointed to a red-light camera that appears to be pointed directly at the scene where Powell was killed.

"I want to know what's on that camera," he told his friends. "But I bet you they erase everything and say they 'lost the footage.'"

For Addison, there's no doubt that Ferguson has influenced the reaction to this shooting.

"I believe they're gonna take it a little harder based on the situation with Mike Brown right now," he said.

In Ferguson, Tuesday's protest was one of the more peaceful since demonstrations began there August 10, if only because chemical weapons weren't deployed. But a haphazard evacuation led to a late-night onslaught that resulted in more than 50 arrests. The daytime protests were a repeat of Monday's experiment, which involved forcing protesters to walk up and down the street with the occasional threat of arrest for those who stood in one area for too long.

It's not a popular plan. Many protesters feel their right to protest is being squeezed.

"The protesters are peaceful out here, and all the cops are doing is denying us our constitutional rights," said Markis Thompson, 26, a youth director at a nearby church.

Several people have told Daily RFT that they believe the "keep walking" rule is just a way to tire out protesters and make it so hard to demonstrate that they give up. Nonetheless, hundreds of people marched on a street that police have turned into a protest playpen.

Melvin Moffitt states that there is a majority of black people in jail over white people for "simple" traffic violations, he clearly believes it's a race issue considering the police in the county are mainly white.

He and others should take the time to look up the statistics on how many black people vs. white people have graduated high school in the past years, if kids are not taking the time to do well in school or participate in sports - trouble will probably find them soon enough with that kind of free time. Which leads to drops out, nothing higher than minimum wage jobs, and from there makes basic living hard on high school drop outs.

In a perfect world every person would follow the law and not drive a car if it wasn't legal or didn't have insurance, but the world is not perfect.  People who can't afford car insurance or legalizing their plates will not let that stop them from driving.

[Its all a chain reaction], and the white people are not blame! Simply follow the law, then there's no reason to be in jail. Simple, simple, and simple.

Lethal situation or not, one can’t help but wonder why cops acted so quickly, if they seriously believed they were in imminent danger, harbored prejudice against the assailant, whether they could have resorted to a taser gun, shooting at the suspect’s legs or simply chosen to talk to the man. All things that seem sensible now but perhaps dubious in the heat of the moment and when there is the possibility that one’s life could potentially be lost at any given moment….especially when a knife wielding mentally disturbed man is egging cops to shoot him dead, which is to wonder if he purposefully brought this on to himself?

Crying foul for someone getting shot after threatening police with a knife makes as much sense as cutting yourself, jumping in a shark tank and blaming the sharks for eating you. How about teaching and learning that attacking and/or threatening police with deadly force is not in anyone's best interest?

Hey I justed had a black guy on my job tell me the police should have shot the knife out of his hand. Wow I didn't know the Lone Ranger was a cop

Kristol D. Trice obviously you've never been around someone who may be drugged up, not in their right mind. Police don't have the time, nor inclination to psychoanalyze some jackass whose coming at them with a knife, would YOU?

I have not seen all this police brutality you see. Yes there are times and situations but it not always a given. And when it does happen you are right color is voided.

Hey RFT tell the story from all the different sides and angles. That is what Reporting is suppose to be about not one sided information.

This is a one sided paper/blog/ journalist and I will no longer waste my time with such nonsense twisting the truth to misinform the public. You've lost one reader here which I'm sure many have already deleted this from their likes and I'm sure there are many more to follow!

So what your saying is, if I come after you with a"small" knife, with the intent of taking your life. You could handle me and shouldn't legally be allowed to shoot me in order to defend yourself? You are an idiot! Sit down.

JUST STOP THIS BS!! The only people that are paying a heavy price out of this stupid mess are the kids. Not able to get their education(or meals) because of ignorant fudgeheads(I won't cuss).Get off the flippin streets and let these kids get the education they deserve so they don't end up turning out like the hoodlems roaming their streets atm #foodforthought

Krystol D. Trice

So TWO cops couldn't handle just one man with a small knife without using a gun or shooting to kill?

Krystol D. Trice
Krystol D. Trice

It sounds like a case of suicide by cop to me. Aren't cops trained to deal with that situation? If the knife was just a butter knife, then they didn't need to shoot him. They could have just tackled him and took the knife.

The police aren't trained to " shoot to injure ". If someone is coming at you with a weapon and the intent to kill, you fucking kill them first. How about you people educate yourselves on police protocol instead of assuming. Plus, center mass is the main target in ALL cases in which your weapon is being pulled. Shoot to injure doesn't work because if someone is running at you, you're most likely going to miss. So make sure you don't fucking miss.

Al Jensen
Al Jensen

I don't know how the police are trained, but regular people are always taught to aim for center mass. Shooting people in the leg is actually illegal, and at the very least you can be held civilly liable - meaning if during a robbery you shoot the robber / assailent in the leg, they can turn around and sue you and win. This happens more often than you might think.

People wonder why the black Community is so angry. As police get paid leave, paid vaction, or at most "desk duty", with no real repercussions for their actions. Hardly ever are they held accountable... I believe, that rioting and looting will not help the situation. However, what do people honestly think will come out of these situations? It is inevitable. With any community. Anger intensifies, and when they can't hurt those that are hurting them, they turn to physical objects; stores, cars, building's, etc. Then people take advantage of that situation and loot. The police and government do not care for the concerns of the people. In every situation, they do their best to silence them, and sweep it under the rug with no resolution or real justice. Citizens are tired of injustice. They want answers for this blatant corruption. Officer's are sworn to protect, though they are more concerned about SERVING. This is what a For-Profit Prison System is creating. When there has always been injustice, it is now getting out of hand, with officers, power, and profit. And why are they allowed a No-Fly Zone? Or to refuse Media Coverage? So that they are not on tape slaughtering more civilians? If they demand no evidence, there is a reason. Where is the Freedom of Press and Freedom of Assembly, that the constitution clearly states? This does not happen only in the African-American Community. Where is the outrage at police brutality for all Communities? It happens to black, white, hispanic, lgbt, homeless, those with mental illness, children, pets, etc. EVERY DAY. The answer may not be rioting. However, the answer IS to get involved. And demand reform. Citizens are tired of their demands to stay silent.

Where are the Open Carry Supporters? Are they just sitting back, watching what they obsessively demand justice on, as they let others do the "dirty work"? Because, in all reality, they are too coward to take a stand, as they so adamantly claimed just days ago. Or is it due to their own prejudice, and they're enjoying the show hoping the government shoots as many African Americans; in the same "tyrannical hypothetical" situation they were always paranoid about. Yet aren't willing to stand up now that the "hypothetical" has behcome reality? Ya... has nothing to do with race.

Joshua Linder, your lack of education, comprehension, and intelligence is embarrassing. Thank you for being a prime example of why EVERYONE, is not a police officer. And contrary, thank you for proving exactly why we have officers with your mindset. Being a police officer doesn't mean you're above the law. And it doesn't mean, you get to shoot anyone you choose. With no accountability. Your example of being met with an "equal reaction" tells all that needs to be known. If you think a butter knife is EQUAL to a gun. The police ARE trained to wound. The military is trained to kill. Sit the fuck down clown.

RFT does a GREAT job reporting on local events, and I love their reviews on restaurants, concerts, festivals, etc. That said, RFT needs to STOP reporting on politics and topics like Ferguson. The reporting is so one-sided. Please stop RFT.

Strange what RFT reports this morning on this incident. I watched this LIVE on tv and listened to Dotson explain, in detail, how this happened. If he was mentally disabled, why wasn't that brought to the officer's attention? Butter knife? Wasn't mentioned yesterday. Mother just passed? Wasn't mentioned yesterday. Hell, the store owner and another person called the police cuz the kid stole from the store twice, was "acting erratically", yet now the neighborhood is mad at the LEO's? Law enforcement are expected to perform their job, but are criticized for doing so?

Joshua Linder
Joshua Linder

"Shoot them in the leg?" Are you retarded!?! If some one comes at me with a knife, wether it be a butter knife or a sword, I will assume they intend to take my life. That threat will be met with an equal reaction and that means I will shoot you! Cops are not taught to shoot to "wound". If you have to shoot someone that means they are a threat to your life or some one else's! End of story. How about this instead, STOP BREAKING THE LAW ASSHOLE!

Not anymore. But I'm old enough to remember it. I mean, the RFT runs features, not news, but still, this is...a quote from a dude who talked about how he thought the video from the red light cameras (that take snapshots) would be erased? That's just too much. Especially after Dotson did what he did.

Why are these cops not able to shoot these "threats" in the leg? Especially, if able to get several feet from them. Are they trained properly? Or just that incompetent, or eager to execute citizens? This is just as much of an outrage. Knife or not. And what kind of knife? Swiss Army? Fucking Pathetic. And I don't care if it was a machete. Shoot him in the leg and drop his ass.

absolutely it was 100 ways they could have gotten him to drop the knife.,  Is not ok to threaten a police or anybody for that matter, but is also not ok for trained professional with weapons to shoot anyone 10 times without trying to deactivate the situation
