Rev. Al Sharpton Recruits "Justice Disciples" to Restore Order to Ferguson

Many have noted that at Michael Brown rallies, like the one convened by the NAACP on Monday evening, the crowd that arrives to speak about nonviolence and collaboration is older and predominantly female. That might have also been the case last night at the Greater St. Mark's Family Church, where Reverend Al Sharpton appeared with Brown's parents and their attorneys.

However, early on, a cheer rose up from the packed pews when a speaker announced that "200 youth" were headed for the church from the QuikTrip on West Florissant just a few blocks away. When they arrived chanting "no justice, no peace," the audience burst into applause.

See more Riverfront Times coverage of the unrest in Ferguson and the death of Michael Brown.

Before Sharpton took the dais, Brown family attorney Benjamin Crump gave a rousing speech calling this the "worst police shooting" he'd ever seen, and comparing the Brown family to the Trayvon Martin family, whom he also represented.

"Nobody expects to become the martyr of a dead child," he said. "Trayvon Martin was shot by a single shot by an untrained civilian. Michael Brown was executed by a trained police officer."

Brown's parents Michael Brown Sr. and Lesley McSpadden sat onstage just behind the podium but did not speak. Eric Davis, a cousin, spoke on behalf of the family asking for "continued support in a peaceful, calm manner." He also reiterated that Brown had been a peace-loving person, so much so that he didn't go out for football for fear that he could "hurt people."

And then Sharpton took the podium:

"You got issues in this town. The reason for our outrage is, when you keep pressing people down anything will make them open up their mouths," he said to raucous applause, his points sometimes punctuated by a couple of chords from the church organist.

But Sharpton also asked for a return to order in Ferguson.

"If the family ask you to operate in a certain way, respect the family. They haven't even buried their son and people are scarring his name," he said. "We need to use this as a moment to come together.... Old and young to come together and stand as one."

At the end of his remarks, Sharpton made a plea directed at the QuikTrip demonstrators in the crowd, in particular the young men.

"I want 100 brothers to come up here," he said.

Sharpton said he wanted all the young men to sign up to become "justice disciples" that meet regularly and patrol the neighborhoods to "keep order" and "protect the women." He asked that they sign up on a sheet at the door and hold a meeting today at 11 a.m. at St. Mark's.

The speech concluded with a collection taken for the family. Speakers also announced that a new GoFundMe page for the family is now live. "They are going to be missing days from work, will need money for bills, food and all of that while they go this troubling time. This money can be used for his Burial, Legal Expenses, A Memorial Fund or what they need it for," the site says:

Afterward, Chambers Street was lined with cars and young people who'd poured out of the church. They would later make their way back down toward the QuikTrip, where the tone of the evening changed dramatically. Read more about that here:

You can't argue with numbers: "black men between the ages of 14 and 24 are only 1 percent of the population, but commit 27 percent of murders."

I think this would be a wonderful opportunity to pause for a moment to give thanks for the many great contributions of the Afro-American community and to reflect upon all that their culture has accomplished to better our society. Their peaceful and generous nature makes them ideal neighbors, lending testimony to their exceptional family values and parenting skills unrivaled by any other culture.

Their commitment to academic excellence has had a profound effect on our schools and serves as an example to all who hope to achieve prominence as a people. Real Estate values are fueled by the influx of African Americans into an area due to their caring and respectful nurturing of these communities, an example of all they have achieved by their enthusiasm for self-improvement through hard work and a self-reliant can-do nature that is bolstered by their humble nature while demonstrating pride of ownership. Without their industrious and creative drive where would this nation be?

We must also not forget to mention their steadfast monetary support of the United States as a whole, but particularly the weapons and ammunition industry. Without their help, many people working in these industries would probably be unemployed.

Pharmaceuticals play a major role in their lives as well. No, they don't necessarily work in the industry as we know it. But the drug industry is important to their culture and path to upward financial mobility.

Presently the communities enriched the most by this hard working demographic that provides so much to the tax base includes the cities of Spokane WA, Chicago IL, Philadelphia PA, Washington D.C., St. Louis MO, New Orleans LA, Los Angeles CA, Baltimore MD, Pontiac and Flint MI, Gary IN, Newark NJ, Cleveland OH, Atlanta GA, Richmond VA, Memphis TN, Birmingham AL, Camden NJ; and let's not forget Detroit MI, the tourism mecca for those seeking to indulge in the Afro-American experience.

Riverbend Taxi you are a racist. You are the problem. White, black, asian, hispanic, arab... ect. People with your mindset are the problem. U r hate. No white person alive today had anything to do with your ancestors being enslaved. You just want an excuse to be a piece of trash so you hold on to that because you think it's a good reason. Grow up.

I believe that many of you who post on this page, do not want to believe that a police officer could actually kill an unarmed black youth without justification. You want to believe that an officer of the law in your community isn't capable of gross abuse of power. I understand completely, I truly do. I empathize with each & every one of you. I also don't want to believe that there still exist people, in 2014, that do not see myself, nor many other men & women of my complexion, as equals. Who cannot see that we too are individuals, many share the same hopes and dreams for a peaceful & prosperous life in this country as you do. A life without the innate fear of my humanity being debated, due to my manner of dress, my choice in music or the area in which I hail from. We do not live in those times. I know it's a painful realization. We can make it a reality though, It's going to take a lot of teamwork & understanding. You have to want to though.

Dear Riverbend taxi, you earn respect. You cannot demand respect. So, earn it. Nobody is stopping you.

Riverbend Taxi, take that "we don't care about you" statement and flip it. If a White person said that to a Black person what would you say back? What would you think of them for saying that? I don't know you, but my first impression is that you're extremely Racist against White people...That's not a good first impression. If you think that Black people and White people can survive in the same space without coming to and understanding and caring about each other you're insane. If it was really "fuck all White people" and vice versa the resulting violence would literally be a war...how does that help anyone?

Riverbend Taxi
Riverbend Taxi

Why is it that when I say " we will not calm down" you white people automatically start saying we are going to be violent? Mary Kaufman go talk about that in your nazi meetings . Preach to the choir. We are equal. We are here.

Ya might wanna go educate yourself. Slaverly ended along time ago. You are one of the reasons racism is alive and well. I hope if you teach your children to love and not to hate. There's so much hate in the world. For what? Because of things that happened so many years ago. MLK would have smacked you in the face for this ignorant ass comment. Grow up!

And this guy wonders why racism is alive and well. Because of ignorant statements that he just made.

I personally can't stand Al Sharpton. He needs to go far away but if you want respect you have to earn it by being respectful to others and they're property.

Check the records and the stats, there is more black on black crime (of any type, shooting, fighting, etc) than of any white on black or any other on any other. This is FACT, not fiction.

Very nice that Reverend Sharpton initiated taking up a collection for the family. They are gonna need it. I also think that getting people to take responsibility for keeping the neighborhoods safe. It is nice to hear someone speaking rationally and trying to adhere to the parents wishes. I would still like to see more peaceful protesting. It is time St. Louis addresses this problem. We are so racially divided that it hurts us all....not just black people. It would be nice to see the city heal a bit.

Those business are insured. They will get check. White people don't get upset about cops murdering kids in broad daylight. They get upset over businesses losing money. Because the businesses are white. White people always get upset when harm comes to their own. Once again we don't care what your opinion of us is. You have enslaved us, imprisoned us and impoverished us. You have always hated us and always will. You opinion of us does not matter. Do you get that? It doesn't matter. We don't care. Don't preach to us about how to behave, what to think, how we live. Go preach that to your white friends . Talk about it over cocktails . Talk about it over a beer . Your opinions mean nothing to us. Nothing. You . Don't. Matter. To. Us. Get it!

i agree, but i don't like anybody getting hurt,i'd like to see education, lots of community action where black people get on the school board,in politics, etc.get control of the actual community by being the "man"

I was under the impression this is about police using to much force against the black race......not about white people living their lives????

Sandy Ard

Maybe if you acted respectful then you would get respect. Tearing up local businesses and burglarizing them is not very respectful. I hear cries about no opportunities well without those businesses paying taxes there is no money for education and there for less opportunity. Senseless!

Dear white people : nobody black gives a flip about Sharpton and his circus. Other than the fact that he brings his media circus and it will fool white people into thinking they can once again tell us to "calm down " and things will go right back to how they were. Blacks accepting being treated as second class citizens. You will treat us with Respect. We will not "calm down" .
