Cop Fired For Calling Ferguson Protesters "Rabid Dogs" Has History as Facebook Asshole

This awful parking job by a St. Louis cop put a local blogger in the Facebook crosshairs of a Glendale cop.
With each passing day, the patchwork system of tiny police municipalities serving St. Louis county appears more problematic -- and it's not only the breathtaking imbalance in court fines and bench warrants attracting scrutiny. Officers are finding themselves under the microscope as well.

Last week, three cops lost their jobs after video and social-media evidence revealed extraordinarily bad behavior, including one officer who pointed a rifle at protesters and threatened to kill them. Then, on August 25, news broke that the Glendale Police Department was suspending patrolman Matthew Pappert for writing a barrage of hateful Facebook posts, including one declaring that Ferguson protesters "should have been put down like a rabid dog the first night." He was fired on August 28.

But Pappert's name rang a bell for local blogger Steve Patterson. It wasn't a pleasant memory.

These Facebook posts (among others) forced the Glendale Police Department to fire Pappert on Thursday.

"[A]s the TV news anchor began introducing the story, 'An officer from suburban Glendale Police in trouble for Facebook comments...,' I immediately knew the name they'd say: Matthew Pappert," Patterson wrote Thursday on his urban design blog Urban Review STL.

It turns out that Pappert and Patterson share a dozen or so Facebook friends, and Patterson had endured a previous social-media run-in with the recently fired Glendale officer.

Here's the setup: On July 11, Patterson -- who navigates the city by wheelchair and bus -- snapped a photo downtown of a parked St. Louis police cruiser blocking both a fire hydrant and bus stop. He posted the pic to his blog's Facebook and Twitter account, adding in the caption that he was forced to travel to an unobstructed bus stop two blocks away.

The blog's readers shared the photo, and it quickly hit Pappert's news feed. Patterson took a screen shot of the resulting comment thread.

Patterson later wrote that he became "furious" at Pappert's insensitive attitude and knee-jerk defense of the badly parked police vehicle.

"As a disabled person I don't need sympathy, but I do expect those working for the public to show empathy," he tells Daily RFT. "Instead he bragged about parking illegally."

That night, Patterson filled out a complaint form on the Glendale Police Department's website. He received no response. However, on August 23, Patterson watched a local news report about Pappert's suspension.

"I never heard of him before July 11, but I knew from what I saw on his public Facebook timeline, it would only be a matter of time before he got in trouble," he says. "I just didn't know it would happen so quickly."

Patterson tried again to contact the Glendale Police chief on August 23. This time, he received an apologetic response within the hour, and the police chief promised to investigate.

In any case, Pappert lost his job five days later. But Patterson isn't reassured.

"I'm concerned about what police officers are posting privately that we can't see," he says. "This is why I think it's good for the police, elected officials, etc., to more closely represent the general population."

You can read Patterson's full account of his encounter with Pappert on his blog, Urban Review STL, a Riverfront Times Best Of winner for Best Blog.

Then why did they aim sniper rifles at camera techs? Why was Antonio French arrested? Michael Powers as well? Freedom of speech? Press? Where?

BORING !!!! Old news and overplayed news and everybody already knows Where's the good news from Ferguson, RFT ? we seen some of the shares from you so many countless times but a lot of beautiful things happened over the last month there , how much did you report on ? We gave out hundreds and thousands of pounds of Organic homegrown produce over the last four weekends to solve a food desert crisis there and not one of your reporters showed up.collaborative farmers joined up for a common cause and while you were on the street would every other reporter in the world reporting on the same thing we were near blocks from their feeding the people. I guess maybe the good deeds will not get enough likes and shares like the bad deeds do ? Focus on division and that's all will have Focus on unity and watch the people unite

Blow me, berghy. This the problem with all of you liberal fucks. A town gets torn to hell and I call a spade a fucking spade. But that makes me a racist. Right.

Your very welcome, but your sadly mistaken Chris. I don't care if your white, black, red, yellow. Color don't mean a thing to me. Its not just blacks out there, it was all races. You don't have to be a certain race to be an ass hole or an attention whore. But if you think I was talking just about blacks, who is the racist now Chris?

RFT tries to speak on community issues, gets swarmed with racists. Typical. This pattern repeats every time those of us who care try to speak out about race or problems of police overreach. The bigots come out of the woodwork and just strengthen our resolve. Keep up the good work RFT, the hundreds of racists lurking about on your page should tell you that you're doing something right. Their angry denials are all the evidence we need that their attitudes remain a serious problem. Keep reminding everyone; no matter how much they cry about it, the issues raised are real and important. You're doing the right thing and some of us are in your corner.

Fuck you Chris Richardson. You're racist scum of the lowest order.

Thanks for reminding us who the problem really is. People like you. Hope if you're anywhere near this area you take your own advice and leave us in peace, you nasty racist.

Interesting how every post about Ferguson on RFTs page this week has gotten numerous comments of how they suck as a media outlet from the same people. Why keep following them? Also, why not comment on any other type of story they post? Why does the Ferguson coverage make you so angry? Every news source is biased. You made the choice to read it.

It's sad that RFT has to perform their fake I hate cops empathy and really care about minority neighborhoods BS routine to try and win back readers .... You're less relevant than ever

A cop doesn't have a right to his opinion?? And the reason why he had a target on his back was because he's conservative. We live in a free country with free speech, so long as it jives with liberal ideology.

Very sloppy reporting here. In your article, you mention Glendale Police officer. Yet you accompany story with photo of St. Louis City Metropolitan Police car. St. Louis City Police have NOTHING to do with this story. There has been no report of St. Louis City Police doing anything wrong, associated with activities in Ferguson.

Joe Buttice
Joe Buttice

Sara, I appreciate what you're saying, but it's an easy way for the RFT to views for the story. The StL PD car is the catalyst for the officers comments, but the article is about a Glendale police officer. The StL PD will always garner more attention than Glendale.

Sara Thies

Without that picture, the Glendale officer would not have been able to make the asshole comments the headline is talking about.

This cop should have known better in this day and age to post that on FB, but as far as the rabid dogs comment, it's not fair to lump all into that category. But I have many cop friends who have been in Ferguson day in and day out. They have bruises from bricks and debris thrown at them, some have had to get tested for diseases because they've been spit on so many times!! Tell me how that's not acting like an animal??

Yes, he is obviously an asshole, who has been fired and may face charges. Why are we still talking about this guy?! Oh wait, I know.... Keep the tensions elevated so you can try to keep people reading..... Carry on.

Joe Buttice

No, it's not. The picture combined with the headline is a misrepresentation of what's in the article itself.

I have full coverage. I bet once a car got hit, they would move their dam asses off the highway. All they want is attention, nothing but a bunch of attention whores if you ask me. .

We need more expressions of love like proposing to others. Luckily, folks are organized enough to have their cars block the traffic that they demonstrate in front of. If you want to hit their cars and fuck yours up, I wish you the best.
