Jaime Garcia's Historic Start

The first month of the season has certainly been a productive one for the Cardinals, as they currently stand at 14-7 and have a four-game lead over the second-place Cincinnati Reds. All in all, not a bad April.

It's not all that surprising the Cardinals are playing this well; I'm not saying they're a 100+ win team, but coming into the season they were the consensus top team in the NL Central and one of the best clubs in the National League, period. What is a little surprising is how they're winning at the moment. This was a team supposedly built to outscore opponents with a powerful offense. So far, though, the offense has failed to show up in quite the way we expected; on the other hand, the pitching, and especially the starting rotation, has been absolutely brilliant.

No one on the pitching side has been more surprising than Jaime Garcia, who came into camp slated for Memphis and limited innings and stands now at the end of April one of the best pitchers in all of baseball. (Well, for the moment, anyway.)

Ridiculously Premature Thoughts on the Rams' Draft Picks, Vol. 2

Categories: Rams

The first picks are predictable, the latter are where the fun can be had.
I've already gone through the picks the Rams made in the early rounds of this year's draft, and I like what they did. The big question, of course, is Sam Bradford, who will likely make or break the Rams' draft pretty much alone, but the talent the Rams were able to bring in with their early round picks is very encouraging.

The late rounds of the NFL draft are an interesting animal, and honestly I think I enjoy them even more than the early rounds. The big names all go early, of course, but the guys in the latter half of the draft are just more fun. They're project guys and small school guys and injury guys and two-sport guys. But therein lies the challenge and the creativity.

Ridiculously Premature Thoughts on the Rams' Draft Picks, Vol. 1

Categories: Rams
premature-ejaculation.jpg
I've been told premature opinions aren't a big deal, and they happen to every guy sometimes, but I have a sneaking suspicion that's a lie.
I'll own up to it: last year I tried to do an actual report card on the Rams' draft. I gave actual letter grades to all the picks, in spite of the fact none of them had yet played a snap in the NFL, or even been to training camp. Why would I do such a ridiculous thing, you ask? Because everyone else does it, that's why!

See, all the draft experts give out grades on the job various teams did drafting players. Never mind we won't actually know anything about how well a given draft turned out for at least a couple years; no, we need analysis and judgements now.

Well, I'm not doing it this year. I'm not giving out grades which will only in the end prove both my hubris and poor understanding of the game of football. However, I will spout off a bunch of half-baked opinions about the Rams' draft picks. But no letter grades. That's my line in the sand. I am, after all, a man of principle.

The Ryan Howard Contract and What it Means to You

"How much did you get? Wow, that's a lot of money, mang. So that means I should be worth like a billion dollars, right?"
Ryan Howard, St. Louis native and current-hated first baseman for the always-hated Philadelphia Phillies, just signed himself a capital 'E' Enormous contract extension with said Phillies.

Howard's new deal (not to be confused with the New Deal, which was a works project during the Depression that cost slightly less than half what Howard will be making), is set to begin in 2012, the year after his current contract expires. He will make $20 million annually in both 2012 and '13, $25 million each season from 2014-2016, and $23 million in 2017, his age 37 season. There's a $10 million buyout for that final season. That's right, you heard me; the Phillies will have to pay Ryan Howard ten million dollars just to go away.

A quick message to any and all major league teams: I will go away for half that. Seriously. I know, I know, it seems like almost too good a deal to be true, but I assure you I am on the level. Five mil and I'm gone. Poof. Call me Mr. Ghost. Three mil and I won't call for a month. That is bargain basement pricing on walking away. I'll keep my cell on.

Looking Ahead to Day Two of the Draft

Categories: Rams
rams-logo-classic.JPG
In the end, things probably worked out the way they had to in the first round of the draft. The Rams took their quarterback, and all we can hope for now is Sam Bradford turns out to be who they think he'll be.

You know, you would think drafting a possible franchise quarterback would have been more exciting, but somehow it sort of wasn't. Having the first pick meant there was no drama in waiting, and it had been a foregone conclusion for weeks that Bradford was the guy. Kind of odd, really.

So where do the Rams stand going into the second round? I'm glad you asked, because if you hadn't I would have felt bad about forcing you to read this column.

Big Ben Gets Benched

So I'm sure everyone has heard by now that Ben Roethlisberger has received a conditional six game suspension from the NFL for violating the league's behaviour and conduct policy.

Personally, I'm shocked Commissioner Roger Goodell came down as hard as he did on Roethlisberger. I was expecting a weaker response in spite of the fact this isn't Roethlisberger's first brush with the law, and not even close to the first incident of mind-numbingly idiotic and irresponsible behaviour. Shocked, but pleasantly so. I do still have one problem with it, though.

Cubs Ace Carlos Zambrano Moves To the Bullpen, Lookout Gatorade Machine

Categories: Baseball
The Cubs have decided to move former ace and known perpetrator of crimes against Gatorade machines Carlos Zambrano to the bullpen. Big Z has gotten off to a slow start this season, with a 7.45 ERA in four starts and 26 hits allowed in 19.1 innings, and the Cubs' bullpen has been less than inspiring, to say the least. Apparently the thought behind this move is to kill two birds with one stone; bolster the 'pen while giving Zambrano a chance to work through his issues at the same time.

Let me just say, as a Cardinal fan, I fully support and endorse this move.

Pining For Pineiro: Ex-Cardinal Off to a Brilliant Start This Season

Please come back to us, Jo-El!
I don't know if anyone else has been following the performance of one Joel "El Pinata" Pineiro since he left the Cardinals this past offseason, but I have. Not out of some sort of masochistic impulse to see the Cards' moves turn out badly and self-flagellate, mind you. No, I only follow the performance of ex-Cardinals out of an interest in, um, let's see...informing readers? Yeah, that'll work. That sounds perfectly fine.

So how has old Jo-El been doing since jumping over to the Angels' ship? I'll warn you now: unless you happen to be the masochistic knowledge-hungry type, you may want to just give this one a miss.

Dissecting the Rams Draft Deal Discussion

Categories: Rams, Sports
draft-protest-2.jpg
The scene outside Rams Park, as protesters march against the injustice of giving $45 million to a completely unproven commodity.
Less than a week from the NFL draft, there's been plenty to talk about lately, particularly the revelations coming from the Cleveland Browns' front office regarding talks they've had regarding a potential deal with our very own Rams to move up to #1 in the draft. Which, of course, were then heavily doused with cold water by Mike Holmgren, Cleveland's emperor of football stuff. (That's an official title, by the way.) Nonetheless, speculation will continue to circulate heavily between now and Thursday night, when the draft officially get underway.

So what are the Rams going to do with that first pick? Two words: not much.

Baseball, Life, and Stan the Man

Categories: Baseball
musial_card.JPG
My father's father died in January this year. His name was Ernest Quentin Schafer, but everyone called him Gent. I don't know why, exactly; the nickname predates my arrival in the world by four decades or so. He was a lifelong Cardinal fan, and he loved Stan Musial

I was sitting in the hospital waiting area the day he died, sitting with my father about five in the morning. We had said all there was to say about the situation; it was just waiting. My dad leaned over to me and asked me in a low voice to avoid disturbing the few other people keeping vigil, "So, you think the Cardinals are going to be any good this year?" We talked about baseball. It was good. Not great, but good. Better.

The home opener for 2010 has come and gone, and the season is now real.

These things aren't really related, of course, but baseball makes me think of life and life makes me think of baseball, so here we are.
