The Evil Empire?

A quick follow-up to yesterday's Small Plates. Slate's Daniel Gross offers an argument in favor of Whole Foods Market's planned acquisition of rival Wild Oats. Here's the gist of his stance:

In those few places where they overlap, if the Wild Oats were to be closed, or turned into a Whole Foods, how will customers be harmed? These stores are located in urban and suburban areas that are thick with places to shop for food, especially organic food.

Gross also wonders why, in our merger-happy times, the FTC has singled out this particular deal. Worth a read.
