Aquafina to be Labeled as Tap Water

The label of PepsiCo's Aquafina bottled water will soon indicate that the water inside comes from a "Public Water Source." (CNN)

(That's tap water to you and me.)

"If this helps clarify the fact that the water originates from public sources, then it's a reasonable thing to do," said Michelle Naughton, a Pepsi-Cola North America spokeswoman.

As the article points out, PepsiCo's decision comes as opposition to bottled water is growing among both environmentalists and public health officials. At the same time, though, U.S. sales of bottled water totaled about $15 billion -- that's right: billion, with a b -- last year.

I'll admit to spending my share of that $15 billion. Frankly, its recent accolades notwithstanding, I don't especially like the taste of St. Louis tap water. But maybe it's time to invest in a filter.

At least most St. Louis restaurants don't make you choose among sparkling, still or tap when you ask for water.
