House of India, closed for now

House of India (8501 Delmar Boulevard) has closed temporarily due to a kitchen fire, according to a sign on its door. The sign states that the restaurant will reopen in two to three weeks, and workers were busy inside when I visited this morning.

Burger King has announced that it will phase out transfats from its cooking oils. The news interests me only because Burger King seems to have acted after being sued by the Center for Science in the Public Interest. Is this what we have to look forward to? Healthier menus by lawsuit? What about independent restaurants?

It's not as freaky as a land crab, but University of Hawaii researchers will soon be studying the octosquid, a creature that appears to be half-squid, half-octopus. Calamari, anyone?

Finally, if you're looking for some family-friendly food fun this weekend, check out the Fourth of July Camp Cooking Class at Babler Memorial State Park. My colleague Alison Sieloff has all the details here.
