My operatives pass like ninjas through the night, menus tucked into, uh, whatever it is that ninjas wear.
At my desk is a menu for Flaco's Cocina (8400 Delmar Boulevard). For those of you with fond memories of Flaco's Tacos, there are fish tacos on the menu: mahi mahi, tilapia, salmon and "tempura baja." If I'm reading the menu right, you get 2 for $8.95.
The menu as a whole features ceviche, quesadillas and such small plate dishes as kebabs and crab cakes. Main courses include enchiladas, paella and rack of lamb. There are also several desserts, including the intriguing "waffle taco."
Looks like the eastern edge of the Central West End will soon have a new restaurant. According to a letter being sent to nearby residents, the West End Grill will be opening at 354-58 North Boyle Avenue. More from that letter:
Our menu will feature neighborhood fare, from house-made burgers and specialty sandwiches to slightly more upscale American cuisine, with a selection of healthy dining options.
Really, I can't top the first sentence of the press release: "Wine lovers know a great full-bodied wine goes with anything, even the beauty of human anatomy."
The main wine tasting begins at 8 p.m. and costs $65 per person. The "Reserve Room," which features a tasting of premium wines, begins at 6 p.m. and costs $100 per person. A list of the wines available at both tastings is available as a PDF file right here.
I'm so overwhelmed by the possibilities I can't even make a joke.
Congress will soon review the controversial practice of using carbon monoxide to make older, discolored (but not, in theory, spoiled) meat appear red. (Washington Post)

If you read Mike's STL Hops blog, you might remember a few of us discussing how much we enjoyed the cask-conditioned version of O'Fallon's 5-Day IPA. Fantastic wine/beer/spirits writer Eric Asmiov offers a look at the growing popularity of cask-conditioning as well as a primer on what it is. (New York Times)
Noticed while driving around today that Flaco's Cocina is now open at 8400 Delmar Boulevard (the former Shmeer's space). Didn't have time to seek out a menu. I'll try later this week.
(Also, might someone explain Flaco's Tacos? I gather it was a beloved St. Louis institution....)
Uh, nothing closed while I was out of town, right?
A great big thank you to Jeanette Kozlowski for running the show so well last week. She did so well, in fact, that I'm putting her back in charge while I go back to Playa del Carmen for another few days...
A look at what's happening at some of our favorite St. Louis food blogs.
Bill Burge at STL Bitesfilled us in last week when Ian was busy prepping for the big day. Don't worry though -- I have you food freaks covered this week! (And by freaks, I mean the way cool people who read this here blog.)
Since the World Series bumped your show off this week's lineup, I'll use it as an opportunity to ask something of you. Nothing big…just a tiny favor. First off, congratulations on getting your show renewed for another season. Before you begin filming, though, there are some things you must consider -- like how awesome your show was when it was produced for the BBC. There wasn't any choppy, overdramatic editing or any nerve-racking background music. It was simple, almost-comforting reality television -- much different than the calculated mess FOX serves up every week. You demand quality control at every restaurant you enter, so why not demand it from FOX?
Although this isn't a promise of future wok coverage, apparently your trusty stir-fry tool has an outdoor application. Watch a seriously ridiculous video of the German sport of wok racing. Maybe you should consider taking it up once that thrill for the kitchen fades.
