Today's Restaurant Tidbit

• The old Flaco's Tacos was a favorite of mine. Although their fish tacos were great, my favorite was their fish burrito...same ingredients, but more sauce and a big, soft flour tortilla seemed to work better for me. Tortillaria in the CWE does a pretty good fish taco; however, their fish burrito is a dry, lettuce-laden nightmare and they don't use shredded cabbage on either which, to me, was the essence of the Flaco's taste. Bill, the fish at the SLU Flaco's wa reported (by them) to be Alaskan pollack (fried of course, which is how I hear they do it in Mexico).

• Thanks, Bill. Steegness: Hub-cakes, it seems, are pancakes as big around as a car's hubcap. Or, I should say, they were this, as the restaurant is now closed. (And has been for some time, I think.)

• Flaco's was a revered restaurant that at one point had I believe two or three locations. One I think was on Dorsett where Tomatillo once stood. The one I recall for sure, was where the crazy bowls and wraps is now by Slu. Mostly, they were the first place to sell California style fish tacos with I believe Mahi -- though I could erroneously remember that, as at the time, fish was a no-can-do for me. They also had a big hot sauce bar with skull and crossbones hot sauce, but not "skull and crossbones" on the tag, but rather an actual picture of skull and crossbones. It was hot as hell -- but again, I didn't do much hot stuff back then, and I like to think I can man up pretty good now. Menomena tomorrow -- rock!

• I just hope the hub-cake place is still open.
