Now Open: Bella Vita

Mon Jun 30, 2008 at 01:31:43 PM

Rock Hill is now home to its very own wine bar, Bella Vita. The address is 9528 Manchester Road, though the entrance faces the interior of the new shopping center at the southwest corner of Manchester and Rock Hill Roads. (FYI: The shopping center is also home to new locations for Baskin-Robbins and Bandana’s Bar-B-Q.)

I'm still searching for a Web site, so more info to come. Anyone tried it yet?

Three for Three: 6.27-6.29

Fri Jun 27, 2008 at 04:19:18 PM

three.JPG

This weekend Tower Grove Park hosts the annual St. Louis PrideFest. If you plan on attending the event and expect to eat lunch or dinner in the area, know that South Grand is home to many restaurants. Several of these are well-known: City Diner, Mangia, Pho Grand, King and I. However, I'd like to point out a few of the neighborhood's hidden gems.

1. Meskerem Ethiopian Restaurant (3210 South Grand Boulevard): In 2007 the RFT named this Best East African Restaurant. Here's part of the citation:

Meskerem offers something for everyone. Longtime fans of Ethiopian food — not to mention dedicated carnivores — will relish the kitfo, a dish of raw beef with clarified butter and chile powder that's so good you'll imagine you've never really tasted meat before. Vegetarians will be happy to discover the attention Ethiopian cuisine lavishes on vegetables and legumes. (Ethiopian Orthodox Christians observe many fasting days.) Everyone will enjoy the tangy injera bread you use to scoop up your food and the warmth and hospitality of the staff.

A few more suggestions after the jump...

Stop the Flooding: Eat a Muskrat!

Fri Jun 27, 2008 at 01:07:46 PM

Officials in Lincoln County are blaming the breach in the Mississippi River levee at Winfield on...

...muskrats.

Eat more muskrat!
Here's the gist from a CNN.com story headlined "Muskrats blamed for levee breach on Mississippi":
Muskrat holes weakened a Mississippi River levee on Friday, allowing floodwaters to pour into Lincoln County, Missouri, just north of St. Louis, officials said.

Sheriff's deputies alerted residents to evacuate, yelling "get out, the levee broke" as they went door-to-door in the affected areas, according to an Associated Press report....

Though overnight rains were reported in the area, officials speaking at a Friday morning press conference said muskrats looking for food or making dens had dug into the earthen levee, weakening it enough that nature took care of the rest....

Unreal's heart goes out to the residents of Lincoln County.

As for the muskrats, well, perhaps a bit of population control is in order. And although the little critters are kinda homely, some say they make for good eatin'.

Jeanette Kozlowski returns to review the new season of Hell's Kitchen, starring her favorite bad-boy chef, Gordon Ramsay.

8:03 p.m. “Jen is gone, and it makes me sooooo happy,” says a beaming Christina. The remaining three seem rather pleased with a short-term victory. Corey gives Christina a heartfelt statement when she utters, “Congratulations, fucking beeyotch.” And then there’s Petrozza wandering around shirtless. Uh, double yikes!

8:05 p.m. Ramsay whips up one of his specialty dishes and unveils the mystery guests! Who makes Petrozza shriek, “OOoooh my gawd! Oh my gawd!” Find out who it is...after the jump.
